I think racism and even morals depend on the time period. When this film was made it wasn't probably frowned upon in the same way it is now. |

It's completely the opposite, it's a Mickey take out of the ingrained racism that did, and still does, exist in the US
For example, where the black sheriff fools the white townsfolk into thinking he's being k*dnapped .. and they fall it ... with him calling them all dumb

Before the age of ten for me it was one of the films that highlighted racial inequalities and stereotypes. Along with Blues Brothers I had two films growing up that basically said Nazis are scum.

This is not a PC issue and should not be used by those who dislike PC to vent their prejudices.
If Blazing Saddles is racist where do people stand on productions of the Merchant of Venice? Or even Othello which now, quite correctly, has black performers as Othello.
Every one with half brain knows it is satire and makes fun of prejudices. People who like films will know the 1970's was a time when films really pushed boundaries.
Is it near to the knuckle, yes, but it was even then. What has changed was white people openly used the "N" word back in the day and racist terms see "Love They Neighbour" and "Till Death Do Us Part" in Britain.
But has anything changed when people openly use terms such as BBC and Queen of Spaces.

The films they show on networks are generally tied to advertising. I suspect they are more scared of upsetting potential advertisers who are protective of their brand.

He was supposed to be in it but some people had reservations. But Cleavon Little is amazing. In fact I don't think there's a dud actor in the whole thing.
It takes meta to a whole new level at the end.

I remember reading that somewhere that he was supposed to be in it, Mel Brooks wanted John Wayne in the film too but he turned him down! You are right Cleavon Little was brilliant in it! |

The whole point of the film and alot of Mel Brooks stuff is to take the piss out of bigotry and ignorance and Blazing Saddles Tackles racism set in an era when it was probably at it's peak.
The film pretty much shows all the white folks as ignorant cowpoke and settlers turning them into the butt of the joke.
Along with lots of slapstick humour and brilliant gags " look at this"
Lifting hand
"Steady as a rock"
Lift's other shaky hand
" yeah but I shoot with this hand"
A film made in a different era set in a different era .
Casting the black cast as intelligent and sophisticated people, at a time in cinema when most where typecast.
Mel Brooks being Jewish has that and antisemitism as a running theme throughout all his movies.
Blazing Saddles is a great film however Young Frankenstein is a masterpiece with Gene Wilder at his very best. |

It's designed to be like that. A total classic. People need to lighten up as a ginger I've been subjected to lots of ridicule, never let it bother me. Still love the bit where they are all eating beans and farting. Propper lol |

"The whole point of the film and alot of Mel Brooks stuff is to take the piss out of bigotry and ignorance and Blazing Saddles Tackles racism set in an era when it was probably at it's peak.
The film pretty much shows all the white folks as ignorant cowpoke and settlers turning them into the butt of the joke.
Along with lots of slapstick humour and brilliant gags " look at this"
Lifting hand
"Steady as a rock"
Lift's other shaky hand
" yeah but I shoot with this hand"
A film made in a different era set in a different era .
Casting the black cast as intelligent and sophisticated people, at a time in cinema when most where typecast.
Mel Brooks being Jewish has that and antisemitism as a running theme throughout all his movies.
Blazing Saddles is a great film however Young Frankenstein is a masterpiece with Gene Wilder at his very best.
Young Frankenstein is a classic. I also enjoyed high anxiety.
Face it, I love Mel Brooks.

It just shows how much the world has changed like most things it just reflects how things will have been back then and spins it all around to make the white folks of the time appear to be dumb as fuck similar to how django did in the end tho its just a funny movie |

I suppose you could see it as racist film but Quentin Tarantino has white actors using the N word just as much or even more. So saying you couldn’t make it today isn’t that accurate, I think a modern audience would get the joke. It’s only those looking to be insulted that would have an issue.
If you’re using the black characters as the foils of the joke maybe, but they’re often the more intelligent and likeable ones. Also does anyone really think Mel Brooks wanted to make a racist film or a Nazi Propaganda film with the Producers ? |

Was only thinking about this film earlier, there was a mention of it on Radio4 Extra as it celebrates its 50th birthday.
Richard Pryor was a comedy genius, his writing in this along with Mel Brooks ( and 3 other guys ) is just brilliant.
The insistence of Brooks that Pryor did not play the lead was brave but Cleavon Little absolutely nailed it.

It was on today I think. Or yesterday.
Someone said it seemed a bit dated but I don't think so. The issues it tackles are still around today except I'd say that there's racism on both sides of the racial divide now. So sad really.
Also,funny is funny no matter how old it is! I can watch Laurel and Hardy even today and still find myself laughing my arse off. A good joke is timeless and the jokes in blazing saddles are written by the best in the business. |

As a comedy, it's a joy.
As a commentary on racism and it's prevalence in society, it's a joy.
Does it take the piss out of racist bigots? Yes.
Well written, well acted and well delivered satire.
