Do you know any well-known song recordings that most people don't realise aren't the original versions? I'll start off with...
Annie Lennox: No More 'I Love You' s from 1995, originally recorded in 1986 by The Lover Speaks. |

"The communards- dontnleave me this way
I had no idea until I was inflicted with smooth FM for hours at a time "
Which pales into insignificance compared to the (1973) Thelma Houston version or the (1975) Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes version. |

One Step Beyond and indeed their "signature" song Madness were both originally done by Prince Buster - in fact they changed their name to Madness off the back of the song being in the set.

Behind the Mask is indeed not a Clapton original but it was not written by Michael Jackson. The music was written by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Chris Mosdell added English lyrics. It was first recorded by Yellow Magic Orchestra. |

He actually wrote it for a side project of his called The Family in 1984, 3 years before Sinead's first album. Her version wasn't until 1990 |

"Hurt - Johnny Cash is a NiN cover
(still excellent though)
I thought he wrote that about his dad. "
Nah, definitely a Nine Inch Nails song. It's about Trent Reznor's heroin addiction, he wrote it for the album The Downward Spiral in 1994. I think it was around ten years later that Cash covered it?
I actually really like the cover version, NiN's is dark and intense and sends a chill down the spine, but I like how Cash really stripped it back and put so much emotion into it. |

The song ‘Come And Get It’ performed by Badfinger in 1969 was written originally by Paul McCartney. It appears on the Beatles Anthology #3 Album only as a demo. Paul was the only Beatle to perform on the song, he played all the instruments and was the only vocalist too. Was never released as a Beatles song.

He didn't exactly steal it, the producer of the American Recordings series, Rick Rubin reportedly suggested it to JC (a former addict himself) and the lyrics certainly hit a nerve.
Rubin, being a rather well known and proficient producer was apparantly able to give Trent Reznor a call and talk him in to letting it all happen. (NIN do a spine tingling rendition of this live- possibly one of the best gigs i've had the pleasure to witness, unfortunatley, i never saw the mighty Cash ) |

House of the Rising Sun is an old traditional folk song, sung by miners in the late 1800s apparently. The earliest recording was sung by Georgia Turner in the '30s & holds greater power as a cautionary tale of a brothel from the perspective of a woman. |
