I quit 3yrs ago, i be laying if I said I wanted to just stop. But wasn't going to turn out like that. Days from death, five weeks to rebuild best they could. I'm now living a life sentence sober, some livers just don't repair and the endless health issues.
I was forced to make a decision i choice the right way. They had me dead by 37 i laughed by 38 i didn't. |

OP I hardly drink alcohol at all.
I drank a lot in my 20s. It was all part of my big city introduction and I liked the company at that particular workplace.
Once I moved from there, there wasn't the same pull of alcohol and I've never found anywhere else which had that social scene, plus I kind of lost my taste for it in large quantities.
These days part of one of my jobs is being mobile so I don't drink if I know I am working. I'm diabetic too, so alcohol plays havoc with my blood sugar.
I like who I am, some might say boring, but it works for me and that is the main thing.
I thank you for asking and applaud you for reaching out. For lots who may be addicted its not as simple as that and I understand that. |

At the end of May I became ill with a parasitic infection that took just over 2 months to get over, during that time I couldn’t drink as it made me ill. I have The odd glass of wine now but I have no desire to go and ‘have a few’. Got to a stage now where I really don’t miss it. |

I had one pint at a work garden party last night
Before that, I had a pint in Edinburgh at the end of April
I also had a couple in Manchester a few weeks ago
The most I have had in one night is 3
I can't say I'm a non-drinker, but I drink very little and very seldomly |

I finally admitted I had a problem last year and haven’t touched a drop in 10 months. Luckily for me, hubby has been utterly supportive and stopped with me. Couldn’t have done it without him |

We used to drink a lot back in our youth, but these days it’s usually just on special occasions, or if we have a garden party, but even then we don’t drink a stupid amount, can’t cope with the hangovers anymore  |

I would drink 3 or 4 nights a week. Few gins or few glasses of wine.
I don't feel it's too much but when i total up my weekly consumption it sounds like a lot.

In my teens and 20s I used to drink alot. Mainly due to lack of self confidence. It became a problems as for all the times I was a "fun" dr@nk there were also the times when I went too far. However I got into that vicious circle of believing I needed a drink (or 10) to have a good time, which eventually slid into I believed I needed a drink (or 10) before I could go out and have a "good" time...
Two things made me change my thinking and my drinking.
I went travelling on my own in South America and soon realised that being dr@nk and single and female in a foreign country would be a very bad idea. I also found that people still found me funny and attractive sober, I didn't need to get hammered to have the confidence to talk to people. Who knew!
When I got back to the UK I looked at our drinking culture with fresh eyes and to be honest I was bored with it. Yes I still go out with friends, but my aim isn't to get pissed. I very very rarely drink in the house, I don't like the way it makes me feel anymore.
It does seem to make some people feel very uncomfortable if you say you're not drinking, or cutting back on your drinking, some people get very defensive.
I think if the majority of people who drink heavily were honest they drink for the underlying issues (grief, loneliness,lack of confidence, low self esteem,boredom,habit etc etc) rather than because they love the taste of alcohol, no matter how much they might try to kid themselves and other people otherwise.
That isn't judgement, that's from my own experience.

Just don’t enjoy the taste anymore , even at social functions / meals etc we both prefer no alcohol , but would never preach to others should they wish to drink . But the amount of times people try to push alcohol on to us when we’re out is immense saying “ go on have a drink let your hair down ,enjoy yourself “time & time again. I wonder what the response would be if we said “no you don’t need a drink “ . Both of us can have an enjoyable evening without having to consume alcohol |

Very rarely drink and never get d*unk these days. Just the occasional pint with a meal or if I'm out at a gig.
At the height of my drinking I was easily putting away 50+pints a week and as someone that reads toxicology reports for a living regularly can say with some authority that I was regularly putting away the sort of volumes that can be fatal.  I was drinking from 16 till I was 42 so am relieved that my liver still functions
Am I better person for it? That's not for me to say but I'm certainly a different one. |

I drink in moderation, three cans of Guinness last night but only because I’m not working today. Which for me is the key. If I’m working I’m not drinking, same if I’m running the next day or going out on my Motorbike.
I don’t think it makes me any worse or better as a person, I enjoy a decent red or a single malt. Alcohol is a part of my life it doesn’t rule mine as I have my own set of rules around it |
