"Love a carvery, however one of my favourite places to eat is Miller & Carter. Beautiful.
Not mega expensive but not cheap and cheerful
P Never heard of that one sorry P ??"
There's on in Northampton now, can't tell you where as I've not been but I'd like to.
If we go out as a family it's usually somewhere he kids like, or the pub or somewhere I can use my meerkat offer!! If it's just the 2 of us we'll go for a poshish restaurant. |

"Do you like to go to these poncy places ??
Or , like me, would you rather go to a decent pub for a carvery ??"
Replace poncy with fancy. Yes, I like fancy overpriced restaurants. Mostly for the experience and exquisite cuisine. |

It would depend on the price then. I went to a posh place in Castle Ashby a few years back . Ended up paying over 100 quid for 2 of us , and had to go to McDonalds on the way home . Huge Plates with fuck all on them except for a few spots of food in swirly sauce patterns , about as filling as eating one slice of Pizza |

I’m a good curry kinda guy.
My local Indian restaurant is tiny and the midweek papadom, starter, main, rice and naan deal is less than a tenner and it is grade A delicious food.
You can shove your fancy overpriced shite up your arse for me. |

I've never been in an expensive restaurant. Can't say I'm that bothered tho tbf. As much as I love watching Masterchef, not sure micro veg and foam are really my thing |

Don’t like the over cooked, Luke warm veg in a carvery. And queuing up behind people who can’t make up their mind or take 10 minutes to serve themselves with a spoonful of peas.
Give me a nice restaurant with waitress service any time. |

Strikes me there's some reverse snobbery going on here.
I went to catering college so appreciate fine food and I've worked in high end kitchens.
If you see the amount of work that goes on in a kitchen a fine dining restaurant menu you'd realise that you have to pay for that. It's about the depth of flavour not the amount you can pile on your plate.
I'm going to play devil's advocate and say if that's your attitude I don't want to sit next to you in any restaurant.
Not saying you can't enjoy a kebab or a carvery if that's your thing.
Personally I only go to a carvery on sufferance when my 86 year old mum wants to go to one. She loves a Toby. Never seen anyone called Toby in one mind you.
Full of fat, overstuffed gammons and not on the service counter.
Don't mind a Wetherspoons. Sie loves them.
Sits back, opens popcorn... |

Most pub food is overpriced and bought in from companies like Brakes. It's not cooked on the premises just heated up. Save your money and do that at home. Most of the so called gastro pubs are expensive for what they are and you end up sat on a wonkey table with a beermat under a table leg. I would rather sit in a decent restaurant or pub where the food is freshly cooked and sourced locally and you don't need to buy a bag of chips on the way home. Happy to pay extra for that |

Fine dining my arse. Just because a carrot has been julienned doesn't make it less of a root vegetable." Haha excellent |

And while I am at it. I ate at Jamie's Italian once. Would never have rushed back. Food OK but nothing special. There seems to be an unwritten law in some Italian restaurants. The waitress insists on offering to grind the black pepper and the bigger the wooden grinder then the less she grinds... |

I dont want Flambe'd Pate De Fois Fucking Grois on a bed of organic rocket leaves drizzled in a lemon bechamel sauce sourced from the wild mountains of Ancient Mongolia.

Nobody else would. That's grim.
Setting fire to a paté? Doubt lemons grow in Mongolian mountains and in bechamel? Yuck lol
A nice pork fillet with some Parma ham and a drizzle of lemon olive oil on a rocket salad would be nice.

I prefer to cook personally. Though I did watch the program last night about the worlds biggest all you can eat buffet in watford. Could be tempted.
Surely there would be at least one other Fabber in there to play footsie with under the table |

I wouldn’t choose an expensive restaurant, the food is not always the best.
Plus I prefer to have my vegetables whole not some puréed smeared circle on my plate and as for “foam” who thought that looked appetising !!
Just good quality, tasty food suits me in a relaxed atmosphere |

I do love to go to 'fine dining' restaurants - I've had some really memorable experiences and meals that make my mouth water just by thinking about them. I really appreciate the amount of care and attention it's taken to put them together, as well as using ingredients of the highest quality. Apart from that, I do prefer pubs rather than restaurant chains - a pub near me does the best Sunday roast in the UK (probably ) |

I enjoy food in the same way I enjoy sex. I much prefer Quality over quantity. By quality I mean that it must tantalise and seduce my tastebuds.
Some very attractive looking meals ( and sex partners) are very bland and tasteless when you tuck in.
I don’t have a large appetite any longer, for food that is lol, so all you can eat places are just a waste of time and actually make me feel quite sick as I look around. |

I am very fortunate that price is not an issue.. but I won't be fleeced and price does not always equal quality or quantity.. in the past I have treated my workforce to so called fine food but they prefer a chain.. eat what you enjoy |

I don't particularly derive much pleasure from eating out
So a 'posh' restaurant is a bit of waste of money for me
I do, however, enjoy a good cup of coffee, a sandwich and a slice of cake |

I’m a foodie so a decent burger and chips in a pub is good for me.
However, I do also appreciate more refined menu’s at nice restaurants. Gusto has a lovely Argentinian steak and truffle fries. Depends on what I fancy |

Not into posh nosh, usually very overpriced and usually still hungry afterwards. Pub grub is ok but usually not much of a choice. Gimme fish and chips with plenty salt and vinegar sitting on a sea front watching the world go by, any day of the week. |

Gimme a good slice of home made cheese & onion pie (only shortcrust pastry is worth the calories), a few chunky chips and a couple of spoonfuls of either baked beans or mushy peas and I'm a happy boy |

This.
It's also annoying if people denegrate those who do who do like to spend a little more. There's a huge amount of reverse snobbery on this forum. Great if you like a carvery or a pub lunch. Also great if you want to splurge on a Michelin starred meal. Wish I could afford to go to Noma,I've eaten food prepped there as they were a caterer for a client in Copenhagen. Awesome flavours. |

I like a mish mash of fancy sometimes and a Mc Donald's sometimes
I usually go fancy when I visit certain friends and they pay
I sadly can't afford to eat out like that regularly.
I like a Carvery as well though - I have never been to a Toby Carvery - is it any good?
There used to be an amazing Carvery up the road from me that was in an old hotel - it's now a 'Gastro Pub ' where everything is frozen and pretending to be fancy boring!

It's not the price that matters, more the (lack of) value to me
I have a long list of foods that I either won't touch or have tried and don't like
I also have an issue with mixed textures, I don't like 'wet' food and I like my food separated on the plate
I even deconstruct burgers on the very odd occasions I have them
Meals out don't bring me joy
Getting dressed for dinner, formality, enforced conversation and joviality round a table full of food just isn't my idea of fun
If it's your thing, great, fill your boots, just be mindful that not everyone derives pleasure from food or from dining out
So, why would I spend £100 or upwards for something that I probably won't enjoy? |

My local Toby Carvery has tables too close to each other and headline price cheap but drinks extortionate.. a £4-99 breakfast eat as much as you can ends up at 8 quid with coffee and the eggs are rubber on the hotplate. I can go to a local cafe and have a full breakfast for a fiver and eggs are fresh.. How much can anyone eat.. prefer to support my local independent cafe |

I can agree with you, to a point.
I've worked in Hotel management for over 40 years, in hotels from no stars up to 5 stars and with Banqueting up to 1000 people.
I've worked in and managed all depts and know just how hard Chefs work, all against the clock with the pressures they go through.
But at the high end of some hotels, both private and in major groups, when it comes to how they present their food, it's a nonsense in terms of description and presentation. EG, move your half a dozen chips to one side, and you'll find the meat portion hidden underneath!
I know of one hotel group where you'll pay up to £21.50 per head for Breakfast, but the ingredients are from the local Tescos, ASDA etc. But they're described as luxurious or similar.
At times it's money for old rope, especially when you see just how lowly paid all the chef's brigade are. |
