The position of my house means that the sun spends most of the day running along the side of the house, so even on the brightest of days, my living room is dull how can I brighten things up ???

Light paint on the walls opposite windows, and don't clutter the room.

Mine is similar and just did it all in white, very light grey with touches of silver for a bit of glitter. It changed the room completely.

White walls, mirrors, opening space (getting rid of some of the walls), moving bedroom to north side space.

"Use mirrors they reflect the light "
I am in the middle of decorating, I do plan on having a big mirror above the fire.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Can you change the layout so that the darker room is used as the bedroom?

If possible, lighten the area outside of the window. For example if you have fence panels, consider painting them white.

Also consider borrowing light from other rooms, windows over doors or internal windows disguised as mirrors if need be will help.
