I have to have a fasting blood test checking cholesterol and blood sugar. The doctors receptionist said 12 to 14 hours fasting? What does that mean in practice? 12 hours is ok, should it be 13 or stick to 14 if possible? I don't want to muck it up by having a giant cream cake 12 and a half hours before

I'm the wrong person to advise on this...my motto is "always have the cake"

Good luck OP

Normally they ask what you ate and when i do the max to be sure but if they said 12 to 14 then 12 is fine

The receptionist said only water . The reason I ask is that on reflection she seemed very unsure about her facts

In normal people, blood glucose level may go back to it's standard level about 2-3 hours post meal.

12 -14hrs is just to be safe.

12, 13 or 14 shouldn't affect the results.

I just went on a trial of new diabetic drugs for a year and had to go through 3 hours of monitoring. I was told nothing but water from the late evening the night before and my appointment was 10am.

south west , continental

I just had one of these, I didnt eat or drink anything for twelve hours. I think it's so they can check all the functions of the organs and see if they have filtered everything correctly.

My results were a shock to me, I passed everything within normal range limits. I thought my bad cholesterol would be high but it was excellent.

Good luck with your test, it's worth doing, I adjusted my lifestyle eating and drinking habits and it paid off.

Ok, thanks.

I suppose I will find out if I'm normal at least

I think I'll stick to water then. I'll appreciate my post test coffee all the more

by the big field

Book it for 9am, have a big meal at 7pm the night before and find a cafe local to the doctor for a full English as soon as you’re done with the vampires- should be fine and bearable;-)

At least they told you to fast, I turned up for mine after a large bowl of crunchy nut cornflakes and a round of toast ??

Thanks. I live a fairly healthy lifestyle but my under active thyroid can cause cholesterol problems despite that.
