Well probably nothing as we wouldn't be here, simple as !
Was reading a book last night that touched on censorship standards from the late 1920's through to the 90's and got to thinking 'how would ruggers and hpc sort this lot out ?'
I think there would be some ground up prozac in them fig rolls !
Some absolute gems in there :
The Motion Picture Board banned the word 'it' as it could be considered as dangerously suggestive.
On buying the rights to a play about lesbianism called the Childrens hour, Samuel Goldwyn was told he could make it into a film as long as didn't have anything to do with lesbians.
Walt Disney was forbidden from showing cows with udders in his cartoons.
In the original stage play of the Seven Year Itch, the main character commits adultery, but in the film he is only allowed to agonise over it's temptation.
Producers sometimes traded off lines with the Board. The famous line in Gone with the Wind 'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn' was originally cast as 'May your mean little soul burn in hell for eternity'
In terms of printed media, during a syphillis outbreak most papers used the term 'social disease' instead.
Homosexuality was not to be mentioned either with one man being described as having 'indications of an abnormal psychological nature'
Esquire magazine was hauled before the courts for daring to print the words 'backside' and 'behind'
On television, Lucille Ball didn't become pregnant, she was 'expecting'
A well known TV couple sang a song called 'we're having a baby, my baby and me' which was accompanied by a little hula dance - the cameraman was ordered to blur out the dancing.
Even as late as the 1990's the State Department in the US would not use the word 'prostitute' referring instead to 'available casual indigeneous female companions'
Just goes to show how much we have moved on.
Not far enough for some, too far for others I guess. |

Love stuff like this
If we were allowed to hear the word 'it' maybe there wouldn't have been so many actors and actresses with a 'social disease'.
If Walt Disney had drawn udders on his cows then kids would have d*unk more milk and been healthier and Lucille Ball would have been able to show the difference between an uder and a pair of tits by breast feeding her baby.
Maybe if Esquire magazine were able to print the words 'behind and backside' then Rock Hudson and gentlemen with 'indications of an abnormal psychological nature' wouldn't have died of AIDS so quickly.
If the censors were a little more free thinking then people wouldn't be wishin that 'May their mean little soul burn in hell for eternity'!
I say FUCK C*N*O*S*I*!

and ladies, can I also draw your attention to Victoria Claflin Woodhull (1838-1927), famed for being the first woman to stand for the US Presidency
she was arrested on obscenity charges immediately prior to the election for publishing the account of an affair between a married preacher and one of his parishioners.
lesser well known were her demands for free love :
'If I want sexual intercourse with one or one hundred men I shall have it'
it's a brave statement for a woman to make now, let alone in the late 1800's |
