Road safety campaigners are now calling for a complete ban on any kind of mobile phone use while driving citing a driver's inability to multitask as the reason. Does this mean they think we should also not listen to music, speak to passengers or enjoy a coffee too?
They back this up with the spurious claim that we managed without them 30 years ago so ee can do without them now. I don't think these people live in the real world. The same thing can be daid for many things.
Clearly texting while driving is an act of madness but this is a ridiculous step too far. |

Anything that distracts you from driving is distracting you from driving.
At 30mph you are in charge of a ton of machinery travelling at 45 feet every second or 2700 feet a minute.
I'd say that's a good enough reason not to have any in car distractions.
As it sits the phraseology of the law is an ass.
You could use a calculator but not the calculator on your phone.
There's a judicial review of the wording going through at the moment I believe. |

Having a conversation with someone in a car .... whether they are there or not ... still a distraction? Our is there something about the non presence of the person that is more distracting?
What about screaming kids in the back ... ban those too?

I take the same view as RoSPA and the IAM.
How many times have you seen a driver chatting away to a passenger; every time they speak they turn their head towards the passenger.
10 seconds of dialogue and you've travelled 450 feet without a clue what's going on in front of you. |

Exactly, I use mine all the time......
Do they want to ban the stereo as well, we crnt sing in the car that's multitasking.....don't touch the sun visor or Windows.... that s multitasking......don't look at the dash clocks.....on and on and on.... |

It's a hit particularly at the self-employed. They say drivers should pull over every time to take a call. As i said, i don't think they live in the real world. |

Unlike Joe Public the police are trained to do this and in most cases their co driver is the one on the phone.
Attend an RTA where some prick has been distracted by something and tell us all it's nothing more than a way of extracting money from motorists.

They should try and invent something that would take messages when people can't answer the phone. |

I agree about better training and assessment. People do one test at a young age, but 30 years later still driving around having forgotten many aspects.
Car design should also be sorted. Too many buttons to distract the driver. |

it will be about money but using the safety aspect as it's conscience but it is true to say that a phone call even hands free is very distracting your attention and thought is taken elsewhere any distraction of a bad driver and let's face it their are many is not to be encouraged  |

Pedestrians are often completely unaware of their surroundings while using their phone hands free, walking into the road without looking, stopping, meandering all over. I've noticed drivers do the same.
I also think looking at your passenger while talking to them should be banned and wearing earbuds. |

OP, how would you feel if one of your kids was killed by a distracted driver on a mobile phone ? I think you'd be the first one calling for mobile phone use in cars to be banned. I know I would be up in arms about it. To be fair I think it is a sensible law and would make policing much much easier. |

I find it odd that any form of training and improvement is wholly voluntary.

User aviation as an example, pilots are continuously assessed ... their hours monitored, only allowed to fly what they are type certified to do.
A system for drivers where you have to maintain a certain number of hours... bi annual assessment ... competency assessment ... hazard perception testing ... continuous driving development ...
there are many ways to improve things
The laws are currently clear for careless driving, dangerous driving, due care and attention etc etc ... unfortunately these are reactive not proactive, invariably it only becomes an issue AFTER an incident had occurred

I think the general standard of driving needs to be looked at more urgently than chasing phone usage they have had impact on people using a phone without hands free how are they going to police using one hands free.yet general poor driving never gets looked at.i blame the car maker's with too many driving aids people rely on the car to do the work for them |

Too many people have too high a regard for their own competence. It's all too often the victims of their arrogance who pay the price.

they have not thought this through clearly.what about all the many drivers out there that need to speak to ppl via a phone like taxi drivers, delivery drivers etc etc.how would they enforce a total ban on phones in cars the police would never cope |

Using emotion is a way of getting laws like this passed.
If that happened and the driver was using hands free i'd blame the driver, not the technology.
If this goes through one has to wonder where it will stop. Should we be forced to install sound proof screens behind the front seats to block out screaming kids, do away with our stereos and refreshments, sit in complete silence and not utter a leep to our passengers? What about all the accidents caused by wasps? Should we ban drivers from having their windows open?
We have to keep a level head and be sensible and accept that not all risk can be eradicated. |

whilst i agree not ALL risks CAN be eradicated some certainly can! I use an i phone which blocks all texts and calls whilst i am driving sending a message telling the texter that i will get their message when i stop driving! and those of you that HAVE to discuss trivial matters whilst driving will have to live with the consequences should you be involved in an accident whist distracted! Sadly we live in a society that is ruled by phone use, many do not even have the courtesy to get off their phone whilst paying for their goods in a shop!!!! ( rant over!)  |

Is it more distracting than using a touchscreen to change your satnav route, then navigating back one submenu to change the radio station?
What’s the difference between doing these things in a car with a touchscreen and on a phone?

Why are people touching their phone to make calls in the first place, just ask siri or google to 'call whoever's and it does it for you. When I need to make calls when driving i dont touch or look at my phone because i dont need to.
Middle aged people are by far the worst for physically holding their phone to chat on it. You very rarely see young people doing that |

Using emotion is a way of getting laws like this passed.
If that happened and the driver was using hands free i'd blame the driver, not the technology.
If this goes through one has to wonder where it will stop. Should we be forced to install sound proof screens behind the front seats to block out screaming kids, do away with our stereos and refreshments, sit in complete silence and not utter a leep to our passengers? What about all the accidents caused by wasps? Should we ban drivers from having their windows open?
We have to keep a level head and be sensible and accept that not all risk can be eradicated.
whilst i agree not ALL risks CAN be eradicated some certainly can! I use an i phone which blocks all texts and calls whilst i am driving sending a message telling the texter that i will get their message when i stop driving! and those of you that HAVE to discuss trivial matters whilst driving will have to live with the consequences should you be involved in an accident whist distracted! Sadly we live in a society that is ruled by phone use, many do not even have the courtesy to get off their phone whilst paying for their goods in a shop!!!! ( rant over!)

Long overdue. The standard of driving in this country is appalling and phone use is a growing factor in accidents. If you can't drive (or do anything really) for an hour without using a phone there's something psychologically wrong with you. Of course whether it will be policed is another matter. |

Definitely a good thing; I for one keep my phone in the boot when I am driving.
I do however use it on Bluetooth to accept calls - listening to the radio this morning when people have been calling in to say that they have missed turnings when using their phones on Bluetooth I realised that this has happened to me as well.

Well it HAS already , repeatedly illustrated driving and talking hands free , on a driving obstacle course that it is equal or worse than the observed results after a person has consumed alcohol to be just over limit !!!!

There are far more distracting things in a car than a handsfree phone call. You don't turn your head to talk to a phone like you do to a passenger for a start, so either ban passengers or install a microphone connected to a monitoring station to ensure vehicular silence.
I'd bet for every accident involving a hands free phone conversation there are a hundred involving someone altering the radio or changing a cd etc.
As for children screaming in the back of the car, enough said. My pet hate was kids with balloons in the car. I always insisted if they must take them then they had to be in the boot. Nothing more distracting than a balloon bouncing about in the rear view mirror except possibly an air freshener hanging from it.
For what it's worth hanging things from the mirror was banned in the late 80s but given how many you see, clearly not enforced.
It amazes me how many vehicles you see with door mirrors smashes or folded in. How on earth does the driver change lanes without checking their mirrors? |

They just made smoking with kids in the car illegal, and thames valley police said immediately they wouldnt enforce it because they dont have the manpower.

Gotta make criminals out of some of us, no criminals = no revenue, fact, shortage of non seatbelt wearers so they look for new stuff, I work on cars all day everyday, some have more features than a iphone, they could fine you for adjusting the heater controls, then wipers an lights, even indicating would be a crime in a few years until everyone is scared to open the door through a fear of bein stung by the revenue officers, winds me up, as you can probably tell |

It’s not as simple as that when it comes to convincing the Crown Prosecution Service to proceed with a case against a driver using a mobile. There’s quite a bit more to it. Let’s hope no one you care about is smashed beyond recognition in the future by someone on a mobile. Hands free or otherwise. |

I only use my phone for sat nav and blue tooth for music while driving and I always set it up before I set of.
I'm useless at thinking about more than one thing at a time so I never ever touch or use the phone when driving.
The difference between speaking on your phone rather than to a passenger is the fact that a passenger is another pair of eyes. So if you haven't realised the traffic in front has stopped, your passenger might!!
I ride motorbikes, drive lorries, vans and cars lots and see lots of people doing daft things while using their phone. I don't pretend to be the best or safest driver /rider but I would ban all phone use when driving.

The UK has lost thousands of police under the conservative governments since 2010. It's potentially fine to improve laws but enforcement still needs to happen, otherwise it's meaningless and a huge waste of public money.
They could also be looking at what technology could do instead to support people. Many travelling staff rely on phones and forms of communication. Ideally we'd have competitively priced and scheduled public transport against car use, where danger is limited.
Perhaps the cars could talk on your behalf - though many other good ideas will exist. It's a pity its waste much of the investment in vehicles that have integrated communication. Call lenth and frequencies could be limited, as integrated calls seem much safer than someone holding a phone and driving.
More automated cars are coming, do we also need to be aware of those changes and how they can assist drivers and communication before some government minister spends £billions for poor justification |

There's a huge number of people driving in the UK with really bad driving. I would prefer authorities worked to improve driving standards overall. Levels are so bad that huge safely improvements could be made and likely much bigger than from outlawing hands free phone use. |

rules are enforced or made because people cannot be trusted to act accordingly with an interest of other peoples safety.
too many people are selfish and do not care about others. so the only alternative is a blanket ban.

Sat nav is a distraction music passengers people crossing the streets bees that smash off the windscreen but worst and most dangerous of all are the stupid in build safety aids auto break breaking alarms making you slam on on the motorway the stupid in lane sensors that you have to fight with to change lane

One assumes there will be exceptions to this proposal. A single manned police vehicle for example, and also although old technology C B radios are still widely used by truck drivers. Taxis also fall into this category.
But never mind because soon cars will be self driving so then you can cook breakfast as you drive to work. The world's gone MAD |

Because they are afraid of being held legally liable in case of an accident. Not because they are trying to save their drivers or think its unsafe. |

No, you should be able to expect them not to pop on and off foot paths while you drive along. But you have to watch them, and take your eye off other vulnerable road users to do so, just because they live by their own rules. |

The only accident I have had was when a guy ran into the back of me at a red light while he was lighting a cigarette they should ban all smoking first while driving. |

Watching out for other road users is distraction, speed cameras, people walking on pavement, any neon lights on streets.
Are you suggesting that all those should be taken off any proximity to the road to avoid distraction? And build in brake sensors if any other obstacle is closer than 3 meters.
Implaing that every driver can't multitask and have tunel vision. |

You could say the same for pedestrians; small children or people walking dogs. In Germany (at least I think it's Germany) for instance the driver is held accountable for stopping if a pedestrian walks or falls in to the road.
But as for the main point: I've got no problem with a hands free ban. If a call is that important, I'll pull over to answer it, I've done it before and it's not difficult. As a motorcyclist as well who's nearly been wiped more times than I'd like, I'm all for anything that reduces driver distraction. |

As an HGV 1 driver with 40+ years of experience both in UK and European Union I think I'm qualified to state a few points.
During my time pedal cyclists are the worst road users. The rules are in the HIGHWAY CODE FOR ALL ROAD USERS, this includes pedestrians and horse riders.The moral here is obey the rules= greater safety the responsibility is everyones. This proposal as started by OP is largely a waste of time except for revenue purposes. However I fail to see how it can be enforced. I'm all in favour of road safety but it's up to us all as individuals to promote it and drive with due care. Last point in my rant, UK has 2nd best road safety record in the EU ,I've just checked we are only beaten by Sweden. So take care on the roads however you use them people and let's knock Sweden off its perch. |

The problem is. Those that use their phones behind the steering wheel, will carry on to use it, regardless of it being made illegal.
How do you tackle that?

Driving by it’s very nature is multitasking, the worst distraction by far is the kids arguing in the back! Talking on hands free is no more a distraction than talking to fellow passengers
Just an excuse to fine more people.
Plus if you have passengers in the car how can anyone tell if your talking to them or on hands free! |

I think if you have a bad accident they can check your phone records to see if you were on the phone..
I heard about an early morning accident once where a car was on its roof, poor driver dead and no other vehicle involved. His battery powered razor was still buzzing when they found him. |
