did you choose your female name?

Most of us use the name 'given' to us by our parents

You lucky people get to choose again

So what was it about the name you gave yourself that made that the right choice for you?

Sort of different but my friend was born female and we all knew for years that that just wasn’t him. When he did come out to us all and tell us he was male, he asked me to help find a suitable name. I ended up naming him. He’s stuck with the name for three years now

I don't think any of my friends would trust my warped mind that intimately

I suggested Noah. I didn’t think he’d go with any names anyone suggested - I thought it would be a totally personal decision he’d come to himself. But I’m super chuffed

When ma mate's missus applied some lippy and eyeliner to me and squeezed me into one of her dresses after a night on the lush, I became Alice Winger

I didn't bother having a shave

Getting back to the original question, there was no particular reason but I just felt I looked like a Clare.Even before I started dressing, I had an imaginary alter ego called Clare so it was always gonna be that

Thank You Clare

I had imagined as much

As a teenager, I had an imaginary female alter ego, though she was never named and I never had the urge to dress

I did wonder whether the 'alter ego' effect influenced name choices

Around 20 years ago there was a song about two lesbians called Chelsea and Lisa. In the song is a line that goes "who needs boys when Lisa's around" and straight away I knew that was my name. The song is called "She's losing it", the band Belle and Sebastian. Hence, Lisa Belle x

Of course, whether the name actually suits me is totally subjective.A female friend who knows I dress, before she knew I called myself Clare, imagined I would be a Raquel or a Sabrina lol

There is a saying with trans girls, and Clare will identify with this is that the name chooses you, you don't choose the name x

Yes,I'd agree with that totally! I would have expected to want to name myself after some hottie I'd lusted over but it didn't work like that

Zali is 2/3 of my real name and that is how I'm called by my parents, siblings and close friends.

It is masculine in my country but I think it sounds feminine in the western world so I use it.

Where are you from originally?

A touch of the 'exotic' about a name is never a bad thing

I originally called myself Penny, because I liked it. Many years ago when I started ‘dressing’ fully I used to go to a dressing service. The lovely lady who ran it said I looked more like a Rachel than a Penny .... and so Rachel was born xxx

Does Rachel dress differently to Penny? Are they different people / personas?

I shorten my male name in normal life, so it's just as easy to do in femme life as well. Unfortunately unlike some of the girls on here, no fantastic story how I got my name

Just like mine and I think that is equally fantastic - to be able to use your original name.

Ballymena

I got my name from visiting my next door neighbor

““You had better put this on so you don’t make a mess on the dress. It was Patricia’s too” She said holding out an apron. She helped me put it on tying it round my waist. “There you look quite a proper little girl, perhaps we should give you a new name, what would you like to be called?” she asked. I thought for a moment then it came to me I was wearing Jane’s dress. “Jane is a nice name I like it” I said. “Mmm it is nice but that’s my niece’s name, if I had had a second daughter I was going to call her Amanda. I think we should call you Amanda Jane, what do you think?” asked Mrs Morley. “I like it very much” I replied. “That’s it then, you shall be Amanda Jane.””

Mine was given to me by a lady who used to model on the internet years ago. We met by accident and got chatting over a few months, eventually she asked me to call myself Christine after her, that was 2002 and that's me now

No not really ..... Same lady, different name, but Rachel has evolved over time.

I always liked the name Rachel, so it has sort of stuck.

I didn't like the female version of my name, as it was too close to my own.
