I should be reading aircraft pilot manuals (I’m a FlightSim nut), but can’t seem to motivate myself.
A book I would recommend is Dhalgren by Samuel Delaney. It’s a strange sci-fi novel that messed my mind up for a while. |

I'm not really sure I'm a massive petrol head not really a horror fan or anything soppy. |

"I'm not really sure I'm a massive petrol head not really a horror fan or anything soppy."
“American Muscle Cars” by Jim Campisano (if you can find a copy)
Not cars, but, “At The Edge Of Space” by Milt Thompson. Story of the X-15 hypersonic rocket plane NASA flew in the ‘60’s. |

"I've got in a bit of a rut with my reading recently. What are you all reading and what one book would you suggest to another person?"

Aircraft pilot manuals sound pretty dull to me .
I'm going to the library next week to see if they've got any of the suggestions on this thread. Thanks for yours |

I love the C J Sansom books, about a Tudor lawyer who gets caught up at the edge of the politics of the time.
I recently read a Discovery of Witches which was quite good.
If you like history try the St Mary's Chronicles - Just One Damned Thing After Another is the first - I've cried laughing reading those.
And if you like crime, have you read the Helen Grace books. They're a bit different. |

Love Life Ray Kluun. It's not sloppy but its deeply affecting and is a story about true, proper love not the romantic stuff. |

I know you said one but...
Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series - a brand new Met cop who finds out he's got hints of magic and joins the department to fight magical crime. Another hilarious one. |

Read the wolf of Wall Street, best book I ever read and you’ll miss it when it’s finished. The way the duchess is described in it will have you falling in love with her without ever setting eyes in her. |

Crime novels aren't my usual reading material but that's the point of this, to get me out of a rut. Another author noted. |

The book that changed my life was 'To Kill a Mockingbird' just don't bother with the follow up
I read a lot of gothic horror as a child as I was told Frankenstein and Dracula are 'classics'
However a really good one I read is called 'Nightwatch' as the plot really interested me. Basically a guy wakes up one morning and everyone has disappeared, he's alone. All building and infrastructure is still around just no people. |

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle - Stuart Turton.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.
The latter is one of my all time favourites and one I visit often. It's magical and romantic and sad and witty and just rather special overall. |

This book will make you realise where your priorities should lie but it's not an easy read from an emotional point of view. A couple of times I had to put it down for a few days. I think it's because it's a true account that its more affecting. |

But I'm all fluffy and happy at the minute I can't go back to being a miserable git again if I read it and realise I'm fecking it all up again. |

I'm going to make a bit of a list and try several of these suggestions. Obviously I can't try them all I'd never get anything else done
Keep the suggestions coming. |

Way better than the film, I waited 5 years for the film after reading the book and although I enjoyed it, the book was miles better. If you read a second book in your life make it that one. |

If you like dark thrillers, I can't recommend enough Val Mcdermid - Mermaids Singing. It's the first book in the Tony Hill series that became that dreadful Wire in the Blood, TV program. Don't judge the books by that. |

That may be a little too much then. Try one called A Place of Execution by the same author instead. Sounds a more gruesome title, but isn't and its a stand alone great story. That way, you'll know her style and decide if you want to read more. Enjoy |

Hehehe. No she doesn't, but looks are deceiving. There's blackness deep down, but in a good way. I love her novels. |

Reading Out of Time by Miranda Sawyer at the minute off and on.
Would recommend the Mighty Waktzer by Howard Jacobson, I like the author and it’s a funny take on who the hell we are, belonging, and it has ping pong |
