I've got in a bit of a rut with my reading recently. What are you all reading and what one book would you suggest to another person?

I should be reading aircraft pilot manuals (I’m a FlightSim nut), but can’t seem to motivate myself.

A book I would recommend is Dhalgren by Samuel Delaney. It’s a strange sci-fi novel that messed my mind up for a while.

I'm not really sure I'm a massive petrol head not really a horror fan or anything soppy.

"I'm not really sure I'm a massive petrol head not really a horror fan or anything soppy."

“American Muscle Cars” by Jim Campisano (if you can find a copy)

Not cars, but, “At The Edge Of Space” by Milt Thompson. Story of the X-15 hypersonic rocket plane NASA flew in the ‘60’s.

Aircraft pilot manuals sound pretty dull to me .

I'm going to the library next week to see if they've got any of the suggestions on this thread. Thanks for yours

I love the C J Sansom books, about a Tudor lawyer who gets caught up at the edge of the politics of the time.

I recently read a Discovery of Witches which was quite good.

If you like history try the St Mary's Chronicles - Just One Damned Thing After Another is the first - I've cried laughing reading those.

And if you like crime, have you read the Helen Grace books. They're a bit different.

The book that changed my life was 'To Kill a Mockingbird' just don't bother with the follow up

I read a lot of gothic horror as a child as I was told Frankenstein and Dracula are 'classics'

However a really good one I read is called 'Nightwatch' as the plot really interested me. Basically a guy wakes up one morning and everyone has disappeared, he's alone. All building and infrastructure is still around just no people.

This book will make you realise where your priorities should lie but it's not an easy read from an emotional point of view. A couple of times I had to put it down for a few days. I think it's because it's a true account that its more affecting.

If you like dark thrillers, I can't recommend enough Val Mcdermid - Mermaids Singing. It's the first book in the Tony Hill series that became that dreadful Wire in the Blood, TV program. Don't judge the books by that.

That may be a little too much then. Try one called A Place of Execution by the same author instead. Sounds a more gruesome title, but isn't and its a stand alone great story. That way, you'll know her style and decide if you want to read more. Enjoy
