I was brought up with a strict roast dinner protocol...eg
Chicken = stuffing and bread sauce
Lamb = mint sauce
Beef = horseradish or mustard
Pork,= apple sauce
You never mixed condiments.
Is this normal or do some people have mint sauce with beef and apple with lamb etc? |

My parents were weirder than most. Other than ketchup on hamburgers or hotdogs, we were never allowed any sauce on meat, other than (sometimes) homemade gravy. Apparently sauce "hides the taste of the meat."
And they wonder why I'm vegetarian.

That is very strict! We weren't allowed tomato sauce with eggs and I thought all cheese was dark orange as we only ever has red Leicester. Adults are weird! |

I have mint sauce on all my cooked dinners.
I don’t eat Duck or Roast Pork. I’m a chicken or beef gal.
Stuffing has to be sage and onion that is a bit crispy/burnt.
Mustard has to be French. |

Bread sauce is only for Christmas and purely for the aesthetic, not eating.
Stuffing is ok but herby burps put me off, much prefer my stodge to come from roasties/mash.
Mustard is great with everything, pork especially. |

Pretty strict here too.. But maybe a little more variety.
Chicken with stuffing and gravy.
Lamb with mint sauce or fresh rosemary sprigs and redcurrant.
Beef with horseradish (mustard only used with cold cuts, the exception being when mixed with honey in a glaze for baked ham).
Pork with apple or pear sauce.
Unglazed ham or bacon with parsley sauce (if glazed, with pineapple).
Fish with fresh lemon and tartar sauce (salmon could also be served with horseradish).
Always freshly made and using fresh ingredients.. Never from packets or jars or using dried herbs. It's still how I cook, but I experiment a little more using different fruits, red onion or shallot reductions, red wine or port gravies, and different combinations of herbs and spices to make glazes or herb crusts. |

Ppfftt! Rules are made to be broken.
Yesterday's dinner was Turkey (toby carvery) with mint sauce and gravey. YUM! With a roast at home I might even put some apple sauce on.
I only eat chicken or turkey so I would be missing out on these sauces if I listened to the rules. |

"I always mix.
Lamb and mustard or horseradish is lush.
Were you allowed to mix them when you were a kid?
Yes, I did actually, mum never liked it, but I did anyway."
You little rebel! |
