Simply...yes.

No one else could do everything he did, to the standards that he did it.

As an aside, 12 years ago tonight I was at the o2 for his opening night.

No. It's probably Weird Al Yankovich or Roger Whittaker.

Which two were you thinking, When the Doves Cry & Nothing Compares too you? Or were you thinking Purple Rain & Little Red Corvette, or maybe Raspberry Beret & Alphabet Street...?

Personally I like Kiss and Cream too.

Personally I find the concept of quantifying music a little weird. Music like all ART is very personal thing, it's not like measuring the biggest, fastest or loudest.

Seen in far off places

I would vehemently disagree with this OP

There are, without question, stronger musicians and singers

Songwriting? - Morrissey, Billy Bragg, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Paul Weller are streets ahead

not in my opinion no, music for me is a thing of that time, a voice a tune I've admired many but don't think many stand the test of time but I suppose we like what WE like

Music is always subjective, he was a great writer, singer, musician, producer. But so are, and were many other artists. His vocal range was crazy, he wrote some amazing stuff, and some utter shite. I could never say any one artist is the greatest, too many to choose from. He's up there on the list for sure

Can he compare to the old timers. Ludwig van Beethoven died in 1827 and they are still playing stuff he wrote. Have to hang around a 100 years to see if Prince is still played.

He was pretty good but possibly only as good as some of his contemporaries.

I think you need to look at the whole package with Prince.

Yes, there may have been a better singer, or musician, or dancer, or songwriter.

But I defy anyone to name someone who could do all of those things to the incredibly high standard that he could.

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

I could probably name three of his songs, nowhere near the best in my opinion. Sure he had a talent but no more than many of his contemporaries.
