Just watching channel 4 news and there is a piece on feminists campaigning to shut down the last strip club in Nottingham . The strippers interviewed all said they liked their job , were empowered and no imaginary patriarchy was forcing them to do this . Yet the hatchet faced feminist in the studio didn’t give a shit stating titilation leads to sexual assault . The feminists totally ignored all the working women to force their anti male agenda despite putting these girls , who have said openly by choice they want to do this , out of work . Will they next go after burlesque and possibly swingers clubs cynically using sexually as a political weapon ?The feminists are now turning on any female that does not share their anti male agenda . |

I'm pretty sure there is actually a proven link to higher rate of sexual assaults in the near vacinity to strip/lapdancing clubs. Because turning drink horn blokes put on the the streets late at night dies have the almost inevitable consequence in some (but certainly not all cases) |

Do you think your view is any more objective than the feminists that you are attacking? |

There’s definitely an argument for better regulation to prevent trafficking, exploitation and workers rights (only found out recently that girls in Edinburgh clubs have to pay to be able to dance for example).
Should there be a blanket ban? Absolutely not. They’re doing the same in Scotland just now too. All under ‘consultation’ (with whom I’ve no idea) but sighting ‘mysoginy’ as one of the reasons. One of the clubs they’re talking about has Male dancers so go figure. |

They're not really feminists in my eyes. Feminism is about not being repressed and being able to make your own choices. Those women are just attempting to repress and control women in another way under the guise of feminism.
No woman should ever be forced into stripping and other sex work against their will. However women who enjoy and freely choose those professions I consider to be more liberated as they are taking control of their sexuality and using it for their own gain.
There is of course a grey area of women who turn to that kind of work begrudgingly as they need money but there are men who turn to dangerous and potentially life limiting professions because they need the money. I've known men get trapped in working for the military when they would rather leave because they can't get anywhere near that salary on the outside. People only don't see it as the same because of the screwed up attitudes around sex. |

I'd wager many of the women working in these places would rather have a job with the same flexibility and money that didn't involve them taking their clothes off |

I've worked with a few girls who strip.
Never met one who didn't want to do it or didn't enjoy it.
The money "some" can make is much higher than if they had a "proper" job.
Why not go ask a few?

This is an important point. If there is a link between strip clubs and sexual assaults, decisions should be based on research and data and I'm not convinced they always are.
I have heard people arguing against sex work of all varieties and sounding like they are really basing their views on their own moral values and personal disgust of certain activities. A much more valid consideration is the welfare of the workers and the general public. |

Isn't the reason why women chained themselves to railings and threw themselves Infront of horse's was to gain equality and freedom of choice for women.
If women are free to choose where they work and they choose to do that job then more power to them.
This is all about lazy policing and budget cuts.
Rather than shut the place down and put all the staff out of work, wouldn't they be better off campaigning for better police presence in the area, better street lighting, safer more regular public transport and stricter control of how much people can drink in said club's. |

I'd rather take the word of someone who does the job, as opposed to someone who's only having a bet.
I think my point was missed.

"Most strip clubs across the country charge the woman to dance there and it’s known as a ‘house fee’"
Hairdressers do the same with their chairs. The dancers keep the difference.
I'm guessing if they didn't make enough money they wouldn't do it.
I'm also sure there are some who's circumstances aren't as pleasant..... |

I see your point.
Regarding the pit girls, etc, though; what did they actually bring or add to the sport? There's a big difference between casual objectification in sport where there's no point to it and strip clubs where objectification is the actual point.
As other posters have said; the campaigners may be better to look at the safety of those that choose to do it rather than removing their choice.

They sound like the same feminists that don't like women who stay at home to look after their families too. Feminism is about women making their own choices, to live their lives as they want, regardless of who does or doesn't like it, be that men or other women. |

Like Lacey said - if they're denying or removing a woman's right to choose:
they are not feminists.
It's like FOSTA/SESTA in the USA, guided more by moral outrage than to help those affcted by trafficking or who actually work in the industry. |

When historically people have worked so hard to give women those freedoms and choices, particularly in the face of opposition from men, it's seems daft that women are fighting to have those freedoms and choices taken away.

It is trickier to find the nuance, but again that's a moral judgement. Having worked a lot with promo girls, some of whom worked as pit girls, it's really similar - they're able to earn really decent money, work for themselves, and be treated really well as part of a team. Moral outrage on their behalf, without even consulting them is not helping them. |

Feminism isn't confined to one strict form and it's important that we have flexibility to acknowledge that half of the population will have their own ideas for equality, as well as responding to male abuse, Metoo etc. Most of us don't know how it's been in Nottingham, locals will.
We're repressed sexually as a nation |

But aren't strip clubs an expression of how repressed we are as a nation?
The fact that people get tittilated by someone dancing in their pants so much that they are willing to pay money just to see it is pretty repressed, in my opinion. |

Nice to hear a well ballenced objective point of view
In this instance I don't agree with this school of feminists on this matter. I believe in women's right to use their body's how they wish. I have no problem with strippers or sex workers and ethical sex work. But the fact that strip clubs offer a path to 'empowerment' speaks volumes about the power dynamic of men v women in this society and how women are disproportionately commodified. Yes it is a route to make good cash, be your own agent and be successful by your self. But the fact that for many women this is still a short cut v other limited oppertunities speaks volumes for our society.
So I don't agree with these feminist (who do not speak for all feminists). But likewise I think by the tone and words in this post we can see where OP stands on feminism. Likewise I feel I don't agree with his sentiment either. |

"They're not really feminists in my eyes."
100% this.
Sounds like a group of self serving people, just doing it for their own ego, without a thought for anyone else but themselves. They should be pushing for better regulations (as mentioned) and better policing in the areas of strip clubs. If they were so bothered about the dangers, then they would be patrolling the areas around the clubs, stopping attacks happen, rather than sitting in their armchairs on their laptops, campaigning for self gratification |

"They're not really feminists in my eyes.
People only don't see it as the same because of the screwed up attitudes around sex."
Spot on.
When I see people throw the feminist word about, it is clear to me they do not know what a feminist or feminism means.
Feminism is all about empowerment of women.

Girls in all clubs have always had to pay dance fees in the same way cabbies pay the firm they drive for. |

If I was cynical and thought the media would say anything to get their self-serving agenda across, I’d say that the story is presented this way to make any further feminist discussion lose credibility.
Get a simple story, paint “feminisms” as idiots and then it exists forever. If someone raises a point in future which doesn’t suit the media’s point then just label the other side as crazy feminists, point to this story as an example and then any reasoned debate falls away. |

I am a feminist, I’m not anti male. I think some extremists do not speak for all .
Sex work is valid work and taking away that right from women who choose to do it is anti-feminist. Feminism is about equality and choice not control or misogyny.
It also makes it difficult to even say you’re a passionate feminist without people thinking you want to kill all men. |

Slow news day hey.
There's another thread on here today entitled Job Test at High School.
I'm presuming any of the "outraged" Lap dance fans above would be totally fine if their kid came home from school having been told their best career path would be lap dancer?
Theres a big difference between doing something because you want to and doing something because you have to. |

"Just watching channel 4 news and there is a piece on feminists campaigning to shut down the last strip club in Nottingham . Will they next go after burlesque and possibly swingers clubs cynically using sexually as a political weapon ?The feminists are now turning on any female that does not share their anti male agenda. "
Don't liberal (synonyms if feminism) feel proud to see 1 girl making 100 guy crazy |

My adult daughter has worked in strip clubs, she doesn’t have to, it’s not what I would’ve chosen for her. She likes it, it’s her life. I found out when she changed her Facebook profile photo. It’s not up to me.
If a career counsellor had said this at 16 as her mother I wouldn’t have been too surprised but still would’ve done what I did do, which is try to encourage her to further her education, make good decisions for herself and be a decent human.
I’ve several friends who are sex workers and none of them have to, all enjoy it and like the money, who wouldn’t rather make that vs minimum wage? |

Ok but what if a kid came home from school and they has been told their best career path was a bin man or working at a sewage plant or abattoir? They're still jobs that need doing that plenty of people end up doing.
There are also plenty of pretty admirable professions that I doubt people would want a child to be told they should aim to be such as a funeral director, working in an abortion clinic, being a criminal defence lawyer, a bailiff, etc. |

None of those jobs involve taking your clothes off for the titillation of others.
I can't imagine being a young woman and there being the suggestion that that's really all others saw for me |

See also the use of the term "snowflake".
People often paint impassioned as unreasoned, they also confuse their opinion as fact or right.
It's important to remember that any media representation is angled to fit their target demographic and will often demonise the opposing view, minority and vocal groups often get this treatment.
Whether people choose to believe what's being fed to them is up to them. |

I know sex workers with degrees and masters degrees. They can make money other ways, they just prefer this way. We compromise ourselves for our jobs in many worse ways than taking our clothes off. You clearly wouldn't be comfortable making money that way so don't. For other people taking their clothes off for money is a vastly preferable option to staring at a computer screen all day or being another number in a production line. |

"I'd wager many of the women working in these places would rather have a job with the same flexibility and money that didn't involve them taking their clothes off "
Such jobs don’t exist for the masses or we’d all be doing them. |

It's an industry fraught with unscrupulous practices such as exploitation and trafficking. My concern is for the women caught up in that |

So are hand car washes and nail bars. But the answer isn't to shut them down it's to put in place better regulations to protect the workers. |

"Most strip clubs across the country charge the woman to dance there and it’s known as a ‘house fee’
Hairdressers do the same with their chairs. The dancers keep the difference.
Some taxi drivers pay rent for the radio off the firm "
Some pay a ‘fee’ to the company, for getting them the work. |
