Says
‘Mum, you look really pretty today’
You know you can’t look too shabby
Yes I know she could be buttering me up, but I’m holding on to this as a genuine compliment.
Can you tell the difference between genuine compliments and the ones with an ulterior motive ?
I’m so cynical - I’m still questioning whether I am the most hilarious on here |

I think to be a genuine compliment there isn't an ulterior motive behind it! So on here I take them as a bit tongue in cheek! Yes a guy can think a lady is hot but unless they would actually say that when they're out and met her casually then I wouldn't take it as genuine on here! Even though lots probably do mean it, perhaps it is genuine but there will always be an ulterior motive on fab? |

Sometimes I have a hard time believing compliments. If they come from someone who's not usually full of shit they give me a nice little boost.
Compliments about who I am always mean more to me than those about how I physically look. I struggle to believe anyone really finds me that attractive lol |

Ah from the teen, it’s at least half genuine, they took the time to focus on being nice. Take it as a win, parents of teens get enough shit.
You are beautiful.

"The minute my teen talks to me at all, they're after something.
I hear you
But without any ulterior motive, you are gorgeous. I have said so on many threads "
Too lovely - thanks |

Yeah they speak the truth. I remember wearing quite a short skirt with tights and boots and thought it looked quite good. Until I got Mum you look like Shirley off Eastenders.
Love em |

I tend to believe the ones that compliment my work/my mind/my words. I can believe them, you sort of know the intent behind which someone says something. I give people compliments a fair amount I think and I do sometimes worry it comes across as insincere but when I do think x about something I want to share it. |

I believe my kids when they compliment me. My 9 year old is a charmer and he knows how to compliment the ladies, but my 7 year old has ASD and is very matter of fact, painfully blunt and very, very honest - if he says i look pretty i’m always secretly pleased |

"I'm pretty astute, though at times, I'm definitely in a gullible haze. I think it depends if I want to believe it from that person, at that time."
Yea I get that too |

I love the openness of compliments that are so sincere, you just have to say them when you think them |

'It's very you, dad' is my teen's diplomatic go-to when confronted by my latest outre purchase.
I'll certainly take praise in the spirit in which it's given. I try not to brush off a compliment, but a dash of self-deprecation will slip in. |

When my teenage daughter says "Dad, you look nice", or something similar, I believe it's meant with genuine intent.
There's nobody I'd rather hear it from either.
Floro - you ARE very pretty from what I've seen... |

I tend to be very cynical about most compliments I receive especially on here. But I know that the ones I get off someone special are truly genuine and heartfelt. Plus my youngest is ASD and if he says I look good I must. Yesterday I tried on a new dress style I bought ready for holiday, he said I don’t like it makes you look big. Dress is going back today! I believe my son when he gives me a compliment he's nearly 14 so I know he doesn't say it unless he means it. Nothing makes me feel happier.
As for on here I take anything that is said to me with a big sack of salt... Apart from if from maybe two of my close friends on here. I don't like been cynical but it's hard not to be when experience hasn't showed me to be anything less. Sad but true |

My youngest has ASD and years ago he said to me “ Mam I wouldn’t say you’re fat, you might look it but I wouldn’t say it.” Didn’t know wether to laugh or cry
Absolute legend that boy in my eyes |

I tend to let compliments land from people I've developed rapport with.
I can choose to accept them more generally, although don't always. But I'm very good at keeping "You're hot" separate from "therefore you owe me attention". (so often the way on here!) |
