I don't unfortunately, apart from the usual.

Stay away from spicy food

I suffered terribly when carrying my lad, there are tablets available from the docs. Don't know how readily but they gave them to me when I was going in for my c-section

Id advise to stay clear of fizz drinks and high sugar foods.

The feeling makes you feel awful all the time.

It is a miserable condition. I take lansoprazole daily.

High fat foods, high in acid foods, alcohol all sorts aggravate it, for some people it’s even foods you don’t expect. There are over the counter remedies like omeprazole that when combined with diet changes will calm down the misery of it. I hope you feel better.

Try not to eat late a night before you go to sleep. Cut down on alcohol, strong coffee, Spicy and acidy food and if your a smoker, cut down on those too.

Mine disappeared almost overnight from going keto 11 years ago and the health benefits of keto/LCHF/carnivore are huge.

Even if you don’t stay keto, use it as an elimination experiment.

Feel free to PM, there are millions of us that have stopped it through diet change alone.

I would get some lansoprazole; just to keep handy if you have a severe flare up... they are pretty harmless tablets that have very minute chances of side effects.

The effects GERD are more serious than taking any form of meds I promise you.

Then once finding out what diet works for you, you can stop taking meds.

Have you cut out alcohol? Also look into foods that fight inflammation, peppermint oil helps too

You may not have to, coffee is a staple in most LCHF folk because we lace it with double cream. I can’t recall anyone stating coffee causes reflux in the absence of carbs.

Used to get really bad reflux. Lansoprazole, omeprazole both helped to an extent but I've cut down on refined carbs, sugar, alcohol and started eating cooked breakfasts regularly (daily), or at least eggs. The fat seems to help me. Still occasionally get flare-ups but usually after getting really pissed or eating shit regularly.

I'll second what has been said, Keto. Couldn't breathe many times with acid reflux issues, and always had a permanent cough. Didn't want medication my whole life, researched thoroughly, went Keto, saved my life .

Comes back as soon as I have a high carb meal, never going back to those days again.

Not been diagnosed but suffer with acid at night and awful heartburn.

Avoid a lot of bread, onions, acidic drinks and don't eat after 7:30 at night. Waking up with acid coming out your nose isn't nice.

I'm on Lansoprazole, its effects are negligible. Apparently it's like a miracle drug for some people, and unremarkable for others. The only real thing that helps me is cutting out fatty foods and alcohol. Life without whiskey and hamburgers would be a miserable existence, so I have a high-gaviscon diet. (I find the chewable tablets work better for calming an attack than the liquid)

Ugh the night time attacks are horrible. You know when your drink goes down the wrong way and you think you're going to die? I used to get that in the middle of the night, except it was stomach acid going into my windpipe.

That's terrifying isn't it. I genuinely thought I was gonna die too. Being woken by drowning on acid. Gasping for air but windpipe blocked with the burny bile

Ugh the night time attacks are horrible. You know when your drink goes down the wrong way and you think you're going to die? I used to get that in the middle of the night, except it was stomach acid going into my windpipe.

The pharmacist advised me to avoid drinking water after meals and late in the evening if I'm getting night time flare ups. The logic being that filling your stomach with water is just going to bring the acid higher up by your oesophagus, so it's more likely to leak through. I sip water constantly through the day rather than drinking a full glass at a time, and I don't tend to get any fluid related problems now. (Unless I've put away a whole bottle of wine, obvs)

I’m massively resistant to taking medication (despite giving it out being my job), but I found the best way to deal with GERD was to take medication to solve it, give everything a rest from the burn, move onto a very plain diet and then come off meds and slowly introduce other foods.

That gave my stomach and throat a break (my voice was wrecked by my coughing at that point) and gave me a quick guide to what triggered it as I introduced foods back in.

My son has had it since birth (he’s now 6), we find that acidic or fatty foods make him worse. Orange juice and tomato based products especially.

He’s tried several meds but none have worked for him.

Keep your meals smaller and at regular intervals, try sleeping more upright (using a wedge or blocks under mattress, not pillows) if you can tolerate. And ensure you’re not constipated too as that can worsen it. I feel for you

Triggers for me are fruit juice, pastry and foods with seeds. I used to have a glass of fruit juice every morning but as soon as I stopped it went away overnight! Have a coffee now and no adverse issues! This was after having all the tests, including the camera mentioned above with no diagnosis. I had it without sedation and it’s not so bad as they numb your throat. Now I just get the odd flare up and take omeprazole if needed but probably only about once per month. Good luck.

Milk can be good for that. Just have in in small amounts as it can be an irritant in too high a volume for some people.

Although the recommendation is usually semi skimmed I find a small amount of whole milk much better than semi skimmed

And avoid any milk products, milk does have a low ph but when it hits your stomach you body produces more acid to break down the fats and proteins that milk contains. Search online for non a alkalizing diet

If this thread shows anything it’s that no one is going to be able to say “this is what you need to avoid and this is what you need to eat/drink” because everyone is different in what triggers and what helps.

I feel for you! Having gone for years being able to eat anything, anytime, I suffered from this for last 4 years. Tried nearly all the things above with no effect, including diet change (I have other "issues" as well). Omeprazole knocked it on the head day 1. I don't take any other medicine except hayfever if I can help it, but couldn't not now. No idea if it's long term - I do hope not, but frankly scared to try and come off them.

It gives me two mild side effects - having spend most of the last 4 years frequently waking up due to the reflux, it's now like someone has given me horse tranquilisers! The other is **extremely** vivid dreams. First week mainly involved me fighting to stay alive by biting others to death... Took a few months to control them.

Hmm

This is along the same lines apple cider vinegar which I mentioned further up the thread.

You can get on Amazon or in America Amish formula called 'Stops Acid Reflux' which is a mix of apple cider vinegar, garlic and ginger and its like magic!

I've been diagnosed with gerd and dysfunctional breathing.

This means breathing and exercise don't mix.

I've just seen a brillaint YT video that says "When the PH level is not correct and starts to be come less acidic, then the sphincter opens and lets everything spill out, burning the upper food tract and forcing the affected area to fill up with self defending mucus.

Most stomach calming medicine tries to reduce the acidity, so this makes things worse.

So apple cider vinegar and apple vinegar cider and hydrochloric acid tablets have been used to increase the acidity, closes the upper sphincter and fights bacteria, absorbs more nutrients and other nutrients.

If this sounds wierd, think =of a fire door: the hotter the fire the better the door is, as it will expand and closes any gaps and stops the burning from spreading.

I'm gonna mention this whwn I go to the pharmacist.

I had serious Acid Reflux issues until about 4 years ago when my then GP referred me into hospital for an Oral Endoscopy.

That showed a small tear in my gullet which they were able to repair which stopped the usual levels of stomach acid from seeping through.

However, for over 23 years, I always had winter coughs, which could last for up to 6 months, and GP's couldn't find any cause, nor could specialists either.

Then last November, my GP in Hull saw me and looking through my notes, came up with a reason. He sent me in for chest XRays, which came back as totally clear, with no signs of heart or lung issues.

His cure was to put me on Peptac Acid liquid medicine; it's an Industrial Strength Gaviscon. In two weeks I was Cough Free and remain so right through to today.

Cause was excess Acid Reflux build up and creating bad irritation to back of my throat, causing severe coughing. This cause was only discovered about 5 years ago in Holland (he's Dutch) but the NHS is investigating its merits, whilst the European medical authorities recognise it as an ailment and how to cure it.

I have gaviscon if I need it, but have managed it with diet.

I takes daily probiotic (one of the ones with the most bacteria thingys), have kefir yogurt every day, and drink a glass of kombucha.

No spicy or excessively fatty food, no eating late at night, 3 regular small meals and little snacking, I rarely eat wheat, and have little dairy.

I suffer too. Had an endoscopy and diagnosis about 12 years ago.

Initially I was prescribed omeprazole which worked well but I was concerned about the potential long term effects of taking a PPI, so looked at alternatives.

Shifting a lot of weight made a huge difference, that and the avoidance of sugary foods.

To be honest, having searched for the triggers, I can say that spicy foods, coffee and alcohol are all fine in moderation. It’s the sugar that is pretty much guaranteed to set me off. Even too much fruit is enough.

Hi all. I had acid reflux for years. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer probably caused by the acid reflux. I’m 3 years cancer free. But I would urge anyone suffering with this to get your doctor to send you for a endoscopy!!! It’s not nice but neither is cancer!! And if they catch it early you have a good chance of being cured.

I have just returned from my colonoscopy and came back healthy-ish Diverticular disease, aka colon hernia. Nowt seriuos, just need more fibre in my diet...err hang on I've got IBS/long term trots, so that's bad advice.

So it's back to the GP, chew on the results and badger for a camera down the cake hole to find out the real reason I have GERD.

GERD is the root ailment that's causing all of my other symptoms.

Entonox was amazing, who's with me on that one?

This is really interesting and explains a lot of individual symptoms that are all linked.

GERD: the evil octopus that lives in your belly and causes havoc all over the shop!
