My understanding of the rightful controversy surrounding shark fin soup is that their fins are hacked off by fishermen who then toss the injured animal back into the sea where they inevitably die and/or eaten.

Its yet again , mainly for the far east market . Same as ivory and rhino horn .
None if them have any medicinal or nutritional value whatsoever , but as it's their " custom " nobody does anything .

Shark bodies are thrown away.. often alive still, after they are definned. They cant swim, so they drown.. sharks need to keep moving to breath.
If you eat shark meat. You're a bit stupid. All the top of the food chain predators of the ocean have high levels of mercury in them. A fact I learnt from watching the Cove. It's why we shouldn't really be eating Dolphin meat either.
I love sharks, I think they're beautiful, intimidating and fascinating. Why anyone would enjoy eating shark fin soup is beyond me. |

Also.. they're being fished faster than they can keep up their population. hundreds of thousands are definned every year. Compared to the 3-4 Fatal shark bites on people.
We're altering their behaviour through cage diving and shark feeding tourism. Leading then to learn that people mean food.. which will end badly and lead to shark culling and revenge attacks.
Yet ask anyone who has been bit what they think of the creatures. Nothing but praise usually. |
