Ok I'm a Manchester dude and have often wondered just what it is about the North West that sets us apart musically? Any ideas ? Will it be a working class thing? Why not the North East then? Can't be pot luck. Don't think any other region in the world can compare.

It's not just north west and it's not just music.

Billy Elliott. The dancer from the North East.

Kes the Kestrel from Leeds.

That's 3 different regions and 3 different arty farties covered. Music, dance, literature.

Maybe it's the grandfathers of many modern businesses who started out ordinary and got lucky?

Take for example, Lord Leverhulme.

Born in Bolton, worked like a slave for his dad, making soap. Bought a bit of land cheaply in Birkenhead. Set up a bit of a factory, employed ordinary workers and looked after them, treated them relatively well, but encouraged very heavily that they learn about art etc.

He was also a bit puddled. Insisted on sleeping under the starts so his bedroom only had half a roof!

Don't know if that answers your question, but maybe?

That's only two but I know it's a huge list.

I bet you there's not many that I like. Don't confuse that with 'they are shit'. I'm not saying that at all.

Perhaps if your from that region you really rate them. Huge successful artists on that list of 1000s I'm sure.

Yes it's cool mate. We all have different tastes. Just don't know of another area that has produced so many good bands.

I'm biased but Wales have had a good attempt over the years. Same for Scotland but to be honest, if this was Musical Top Trumps - I think you'd win.

I can't agree with that and perhaps this will make your stomach turn but picture X Factor.

Everyone stands there with a frigging guitar. Even festivals have plenty of new guitar stuff.

Music is changing and always has, it's a progressive art.

No I've read about it. Less a nd less kids are picking up musical instruments and are certainly dwindling when they go to high school. Probably.pigs and troughs but still with technology going the way it is...

Well I suppose they do cost quite a lot where as a pc or ipad can have loads of different ways of making music.

The North West was also famous for its night clubs and DJ s

It takes one big artist from an area...the rest are in their slipstream that wouldn't have made it without them.

Liverpool/Beatles is the only city that as far as i know works each way,tho oddly, for a football city the Beatles were never interested.

Apart from Matt busby(manc)..there's no football related lyric in any of their songs.

Any northwest artist I can out trump with another area.

Rolling Stones are from Kent (old money),So is David Bowie and Peter Frampton.

Together they will have outsold anything from NW together.
