ok so we seem to be going thru a bit of a bad patch with ''things happening'' with one of our cars ripped wing mirror off and boot mark to a wing and now damage to our wall some one has pulled all the coping stones off and broke them.
so we are thinking of installing a wireless cctv system to try and record so we can take further action why mentioning this on fab we hear you say well we think its a person we've met (non fab) for a meet and when he asked again we said no thanks .. we think its him as we have seen him several times in our area ie the footpath right next to our house now we know nobody is guilty unless proved and i really hope we are wrong.
sorry long winded if the cctv cam comes up with a face pic of someone doing damage is it a police matter or a civil one.
i so hope its not a swinging matter as thats a really a nasty low thing but if it is we will take it all the way no fear of telling the police we are swingers
google seems to be giving mixed messages lol so i thought id ask you lot |

From what I know a wired cctv setup is a bit better than a wireless because of the better quality.
You will be looking at quite a bit for good quality cameras that do night vision (presuming it's happening at night)
Pretty easy to install and setup too. |

I have CCTV for similar reasons, make sure you get one with a hard drive to record (some don't record). The damage to the vehicle stopped when I installed the cameras. Yes it's a police matter, it's criminal damage, I have had police involvement however and the suspect has been warned. And yes you do need to have a sign up stating you have CCTV if it is recoding. |

Thanks for the answer.
Can you confirm if you CAN NOT prosecute if you didn't have a sign/warning in place?
It's bizarre if true, why the hell do you have to warn a criminal. |

I believe signage is only needed for commercial premises
Having said that, we have one sign up.
As for prosecuting, on private property it shouldn't be a problem |

I know you had to start putting signs up if you put barbed or razor wire up to deter burglars.
Then I think they banned the stuff (could well be wrong). Just in case a burglar hurt themselves while stealing your hard earned possessions.
You can't make it up really what a joke |

You don’t need a sign. You can record on your own property and the street outside your home without any issue. There are no laws against recording in public either, anybody can do it. The issue would come if you pointed your camera at your neighbours house for instance, other than that, you can record what you like and no signs are required. |

Oh good. Thank you for clarification on this.
It seems common sense won.
I know a sign would be a deterrent but that's all we can do, if someone is hell bent on knicking what isn't theirs, they will go through with it |

The signs you see in shops saying CCTV RECORDING are there to deter thieves, not as a legal requirement. Think about all the CCTV cameras on every corner in every city, you don’t see warning signs for them do you. |

Not sure where they go but I used to sell them by the hundreds. It was all commercial though |

Wired cctv with a hard drive would be a better option. They sell decent ones in screwfix I think. I bought one with 6 cameras from Costco, installed it in one day. They’re very user friendly |
