No and the recent newspaper articles have been mainly BS. |

We need to curtail their access to our food. They've been around longer than us and exist in low numbers - it would seem otherwise if they live on your roof.
If fish stocks dwindle, they may become more dependent on our culture. i think they are probably more public now, due to less landfill waste etc and media coverage.
I'd alter my home if I was besieged. They will be more aggressive during the breeding session |

Now that I would have loved to have seen"
It was just a reflex, I wasn’t even particularly hungry, I just apparently react to an attack. I did feel guilty though, just a flicker of guilt. |

I've spent the last few weeks fighting the fuckers off at work, some more vicious than others, they were protecting chicks, today though they've gone so no more flapping my arms around, yay.

Nope!
It’s people which have created this situation in the first place.
It’s a surprise especially if you are from a place which seems overrun with Herring Gulls like i am but they are actually an endangered species so it’s something we are going to have to put up with

Seagulls are Satan's angels. Happily shit on you as you eat your well deserved fish and chips at the seaside.
Now they nick your dog. Clutch a Bible and banish the devilish birds. Give them no sanctuary... |

Add chicken thighs off the barbecue to that list. Yep, went inside the van for some tongs and the fuckers took the food straight off the barbecue as it was cooking, no joke! ![](/icons/s/eek.gif) |

My friend got shat on by a gull in Whitby

I think it was the emergency shop that finished him off
For an image conscious 20 something to be walking round in what he described as 'geography teacher clothes' was a step too far
Whitby. Sunday afternoon. Clothing options are, well, ... limited |

I see them every year. They are getting more aggressive. Last week I saw and elderly woman attacked at her outside restaurant table. Some people nearby beat it away. Other than that, they shit every. Cull the little feckers I say. I shoot them off my roof with a water blaster. They learn quite quick...![](/icons/s/wink.gif) |

I love Herring Gulls. Honey badger of the bird family. I love any animal that doesn't give a fuck about people, when it really should.
Intelligent and when they throw their necks back to have a throbbing good SQUARK/CACKLE.. Cracks and up every time.

A contributory factor to numbers of gulls will come from landfill sites but normally the same species anywhere really in the uk, but other species of gulls will come and go throughout the year on their migratory journeys overall they can add a bit of gaiety and colour in the right places the seaside would,nt be the same place without the call and sight of the seagull even If they do like your fish and chips.. ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

Hull |
In some respects it is Humans to blame.
People will feed seagulls, just as they do for pigeons. Often, they feed birds in defiance of notices put up by local authorities banning feeding gulls.
Therefore, gulls associate humans with a food supply and get aggressive when forced to.
In some coastal resorts, councils have brought in handlers with birds of prey with some success; but these birds can't be around all day Let alone all year.
It's a constant battle. |

Someone had to punch a gull in the face at some point. I don't condone violence, but sometimes I look at it and go... yeah he had that coming... |

Seaguls are scavengers. Leave food unprotected and they will scavenge.
Seagulls are noisy but nothing compared to humans (especially in their cars).
Seaguls get aggressive when protecting their young. You would be exactly the same if it was your child.
Given the choice of removing seaguls or tourists from Cornwall, no contest. Tourist are everywhere at the moment and f*ckin irritating as hell. |

Two years ago St Ives, had my rum n raisin snapped out of my hand just about to give it a lick.
Imagine if I was going down on somebody, the carnage.
Hastings same year saw a girl lose her chips, just bought, it was like a scene from One Million Years BC with them flapping around her head.

Mmmn ...without the tourists it would just be a load of seaside resorts dying on their arse like elsewhere around the country.
Don't think the seagulls have many pounds in their pockets...

I love them, they are eating to survive plus they have families to feed now. We have got supermarkets, they have the ocean but its not as full as it use to be. They are endangered too. Don't hurt them, they are extraordinary birds x |

One on the things people always note about the USA is that there is a distinct lack of seagull attack or attacks from camels for that matter. So there must be something in it. |

Been told by the local council that they come inland now as fish are in short supply and food is easy to find in cities and towns due to humans being messy , they nest on flat areas so industrial estates roofs are great , plus we cannot kill them they are protected so expect lots of them to take over soon |

Often it's the tourists who don't help themselves or anyone else, in a lot of towns there are signs up saying not to feed them and they just ignore it, thus making the issue worse. |

" Could a seagull pick up a small dog ?
Highly unlikely. They have webbed feet as aquatic birds, not talons like birds of prey."
I agree and I don't believe to story in the paper about the little dog getting snatched. I get to watch some of the local seagull turf wars on the rooftopss at nesting time and they have no issue killing chicks that wander into the wrong territory or throwing them off the roof. They would be quite capable of killing a very small dog but they don't go around carrying them off. |

"Not killing them just how do you stop them.dtealing your chips
"
If we did not make food easily available to them, their behaviour would change.
It's really as simple as that. However, they are not as big a problem as rats for example. Just more visible and news worthy.

No, they just cause 15% of fires in people's homes (chewing cables/equipment).
Cause Salmonellosis, rat bite fever and bubonic plague.
But you're right. At least they don't steal chips...

Tired of this place
I need to get away
It's time for me to go now
I can't stay, no, no, no, no
Just like any bird
I need to spread my wings
And fly across the ocean
See what the new day brings
'Cause I'm a seagull, yeah

"frequent"? How many have there even been, to quantify the frequency of the attacks?
You should think yourself lucky, look at the real problems they get in Australia;

I live in a seaside town. The batty women next door feeds gulls, so we get a few around. Last year a pair nested on her roof, by her chimney. It was a nightmare going outside, as they are so territorial. You risked a dive bombing every time you stepped outdoors.
They also cause a pollution problem in the local sea. There is so much seagull shit on the pier that when it rains it goes in to the sea. The bacteria from this is bad enough to affect the Clean Beach status.
I personally dont understand why they cant be culled. When I lived in London, I remember them culling Canadian geese as they'd become a problem.
