Is it just me or are original fresh ideas for movies becoming non-existent?
Practically every movie these days is either a remake, reboot, sequel, prequel or based off video games, comic books, novels or musicals.
I don't find anything wrong with that but I think there should be a good balance of something new as well as old that way we can still enjoy the movies we like while checking out something new. |

God we’re even having remakes of films not 10 yrs old and not a reworking (lol) as in the Spider-Man franchise but in some cases shot for shot . Glad there’s some of us on the same page |

This is largely why, it is profitable and low risk.
The few times they have tried to be original the movie has bombed, and not always because the movie is bad.
The 3rd spiderman "reboot" was done for a "reason" though. To add him to the MCU.
Another large reason for low originally is because well, everything has already been done pretty much. It runs the line of "the Simpsons already did it".
There are so many times you can change up a plot to add variation to what has come before.
There are plenty of movies out there that have cult followings but when released didn't do well at all at box office. The box office is all that the studios focus on, and it's the masses that dictate how original things will get because of it.

I agree, completely.
Instead of doing these remakes, I’d prefer if they showed the actual old films occasionally. I know that’s what Netflix and others do, but there are some when you want the atmosphere of a cinema crowd or the majesty of a really big screen. |

The film industry is aiming at an sentimental older generation I think. They aren't bringing out anything original for kids/teenagers. The most original
films lately were Bohemium Raspody and Rocket Man, again aimed at older folk. If they continue to do so they risk losing a future generation of cinema goers. X |

I agree. Many remakes these days especially Disney remakes somehow manage to make a profit despite the fact that they absolutely sucked.
Hollywood Studios really need to stop trying to fix what was never broken in the first place. |

That's kind of what they are doing now, but in a way that at least has some effort in to making a movie.
If people are complaining about remakes, just think of the backlash they will get for rereleasing an old movie. No effort done on their part. |

I think originality in horror movies is practically gone as they're all the same with little plot, undeveloped characters and crammed to the brim with predictable cheap jump scares. |

That's kind of what they are doing now, but in a way that at least has some effort in to making a movie.

My bad - what I meant was they can release old stuff for almost zero effort and cost but get some cash in, that would allow them to take a few more risks on other films. |

You may have noticed lots of crime and thriller tv movies and cinema films are now set in the past.Thats because with modern DNA testing crimes can be solved within seconds so not worth making modern thrillers.. so many films have to be written in pre DNA eras! |

This is also a huge point. Same with a lot of movies involving communication. Cell phones, better technology etc kind of rips a huge hole in any true suspense.
Fantasy style movies you can get away with it a bit more since we'll you have to have a fair bit if suspended disbelief as it is.
There are a lot of things that can hinder good plots and original ideas coming to pass.
Honestly though there should be more movies being made using the plots of books and video games (and converted to movies with care) because there are so many actual good stories out there that when they are adapted to movies they get stripped down to their bare minimum and end up as box office bombs.
This is the true issue with Hollywood movies right now,trying to cater a single movie to the whole world, instead of making more varied movies that appeal to more niche groups. |

They're showing some old 80's movies in some cinemas.

I don't agree that everything has been done. That is a real downer on human creativity. Similar arguments have been made about music, inventions, computer software etc. and I don't agree there either.
I have heard creative types saying that all the good writers are in TV these days. Once upon a time everybody wanted to get into movies. Now it seems TV is the big draw. |

I have heard creative types saying that all the good writers are in TV these days. Once upon a time everybody wanted to get into movies. Now it seems TV is the big draw."
But it has been done. Everything is just a slight variation of what came before it at this point.
When you look at it across all platforms - movies, TV shows, books, and video game storylines. It really as been covered.
Star wars is heavily inspired by and is essentially a Japanese movie called The Hidden Fortress but in space.
Try and come up with a plotline (that will appeal as a movie) and I can guarantee you that I will be able to find something that has been done before, or at the very least be greatly similar that it could be associated as inspiration. |

I've been to National Theatre live plays at the Cinema a few times now, really enjoyed it, last one was 4 hours, but with two intervals, but time just flew by, great experience. |

I agree. Indiana Jones for example was inspired by serials from the 1930s. |

Ghostbusters (2016) is possibly one of the worst of Misandry movies seeing that it focused too much of being on the "Women are better than Men" bandwagon rather than give a good story. |

Exactly. So many film franchises ruined because of it. Not just Feminism, also forced diversity.
As you say Ghostbusters (2016), also; Star Wars, Oceans, Terminator (although Genesis killed the franchise off without much help), the new Bond film, any modern superhero film, and many others.
The feminist female characters are all perfect with no flaws, just rediculous. Back in the day you had actually role models for girls like Sigourney Weaver in the Alien films. Now you have 5ft, 7 stone weaklings that are the strongest character in the film...  |

The difference between memorable female characters like Ripley in the alien movies in the first two Terminator movies and the female characters in movies today is that memorable female characters don't cram the fact they're women down people's throats. |

Theres a glut of things to watch.
More now than ever, if sequels aren't your thing, start searching the database for things that might be.
I watched 'Brawl in Cell 99' The other day. Vince Vaughn in something youd never expect to see him in. Boy can act!
Plenty of decent foreign films about, old and new, if you can stomach subtitles. Lots of rising internet stars, lots of internet tripe.
As for sequels. I think the MCU is one of the best things in cinema so far. Sure.. it has its flaws and plot loops. The scope.. the effects.. the epic scale.. I'm invested. Sequels galore. |
