Why are most Gay men so softly spoken?

Our daughter was at Newcastle Pride over the weekend and she brought her friends home on Saturday night. 4 out of the 5 gay lads that were with her, speak with the stereotypical Gay Voice. Just wondered if any one knew why this is. Again I hope I haven't offended anyone with my post.

Confirmation bias on your part? The ones I have met, know and are friends of mine have really been the opposite of softly spoken. I think that much like if you take a cross section of heteronormative folk, some will be softly spoken, others not.

And I'm trying to answer respectfully, ignoring the "gay voice" 'slightly' offensive remark.

Again I'm sorry I obviously have offended and wasn't my intention, I'm not very good at what I'm trying to say

You haven't offended me. It's a slightly cliched trope but maybe it exists for a reason?

I have many gay friends and they are very masculine and possess deep voices...I think it depends on personality...Maybe the ones that behave more softly in their manners are more in touch with their femininity and their right to express how they feel...

But i dont know for real, its just my opinion

You are hearing natural male voices. When two straight males meet they subconsciously lower their voices (it’s an inept reaction due to alpha male behaviour) because the lads see you as different they do not need to compete so the natural voice comes through.

You’ll find yours sounds the same to them

It’s not a gay thing, just a different to you thing

I would love to know what you consider a stereotypical Gay voice, being soft spoken is not a gay thing, I've known one or two to be loud and camp but from my personal experience most act and talk like 'ordinary' men.

I reckon it's an unc0nscious stereotype. Their way of coming out as gay. Showing they are different from straight 'brash' men.

Hiding in the shadows

I have a huge circle of gay friends

Some you'd never know were gay, big hefty lumberjack types, some are so camp & flamboyant they make RuPaul look tame.

I think it's all down to hormones.

some are obviously more effeminate, have always felt more in touch with their girly side
