"No, under 75s should.
Pensioners have had more than enough time to save up for this kind of thing "
Are you saying those in employment shouldn't have to pay for a licence?
If you can't afford a licence, don't have a TV, quite simple. |

As with all these things that come free as you get older, fuel allowance, travel etc, it should be means tested and only given if needed
Before you all yell..... do you think it’s right that someone who is still working full time, taking home a good city wage or even has a pension which is more than most would earn in a year and then automatically receives the fuel allowance (aged 65 and only needed to be in the country one day during the qualifying week) and free travel (60) ?
Personally I say no they shouldn’t and that money could be allocated to other social needs |

Its about time they scrapped the biased BBC, putting radio aside look at all the channels they have.
They have different newsreaders for each channel, millions of weather presenters, dozens of regional areas all with their own presenters.
What a waste of fucking money.

But it might mean my parents wouldn’t be able to go on their 47 cruises a year! Damn right it should be means tested! Most people that age who I know have got much more money than me, and I can’t even remember the last time I watched the BBC. |

Your right it isn't likely, while people are prepared to pay and not complain they will carry on looking after their jobs and paying themselves millions of our money.
Its not as if we are short of teveision stations, its not like years ago when you only had the BBC.
Today your spoilt for choice choosing a channel to watch, yet with all that there's still fuck all to see of evening. |

Nothing should be free in this life unless people need it through no fault of their own. We have soldiers and people living on the street for goodness sake. Why should people get a free tv licence and heating it they can afford it themselves? |

You're no longer legally obliged to pay a tv licence if you don't watch "live" tv. Personally speaking, I think it's ridiculous. Not one country I've ever lived in has a similar tax - it's a bloody television channel, not a necessity. I'm sure someone will come up with the ever lame - "but it only costs ??? pennies a day". Well, so does food, bills etc From the news, there are enough poor people needing foodbanks etc in this country. Why should an entertainment tv channel be able to force people to pay for it when times are hard? |

True. Also, everybody has access to the internet now, even the poorest villagers in Asia have smartphones or access to the web. I don't think I've ever encountered anybody who listens to it. A couple of years ago I was wandering around the foothills of the Kush mountain range. I met a shepherd tending his flock - he was as old as time itself, rode a donkey to keep up with his flock and was watching an episode of Friends on his smartphone. |

If you don't watch anything as it is transmitted 'live', or use iPlayer, then you don't need a licence - regardless of the fact that you may have a laptop/television in your household. Fill out the declaration form and get a refund for your unused portion (ie future) licence fee. You can watch catch-up stuff without a license as long as it's not through iPlayer. |

Dont you dare say that about Sir David Attenborough again!
He will be on the TV forever, you hear me? FOREVER!"
Well yeah of course, reruns!
I'm sorry! I love him too. |

"Should be means tested for over 65’s
Agreed - that would be my answer. And it should be restricted to UK permanent residents. Live abroad - loose it!
But it might mean my parents wouldn’t be able to go on their 47 cruises a year! Damn right it should be means tested! Most people that age who I know have got much more money than me, and I can’t even remember the last time I watched the BBC. "
Maybe they worked bloody hard for all their money and didn't live on welfare . . Can you say the same?
Jealousy . . . That's all it is, someone has more than you so it's wrong that they benefit from a lifetime of hard labour |

If you don't watch anything as it is transmitted 'live', or use iPlayer, then you don't need a licence - regardless of the fact that you may have a laptop/television in your household. Fill out the declaration form and get a refund for your unused portion (ie future) licence fee. You can watch catch-up stuff without a license as long as it's not through iPlayer."
Good advice.

I personally am against the TV licence . .period
I believe it's against all if not most competition laws.
You have to buy the BBC product (the licence) to view its competitors output . . . Their competitors all have to contribute to the BBC too.
It's a state run scam. |

Yes, plus the BBC should stop relying on the licence fee and go to subscription charges. We resent our money going to pay £1.6 Million a year to moron like Linaker, as we don't watch sport. You want to watch something, then you pay for it. But the BBC would implode in weeks if that happened, so it won't. |

The thing is, the government won't give up all that nice cash without a fight. There was something a while ago about replacing the BBC licence with a general "media licence" which everybody was supposed to pay if it came to be. If they scrap the BBC licence, you can guarantee that they will introduce an alternative, and charge the public for the privilege. Still, I'd rather pay a blanket licence fee to all channels rather than just the BBC, who are notoriously left-wing biased. |

What? I think you misinterpreted me. Of course they worked hard for their money! Not at all. I won’t expect it when I’m 75 either. I’m talking about my own parents here. Jealousy? No, they worked hard and never claimed a thing as do I. |

If they gave their lives on the beaches of Normandy they certainly won't be needing a TV licence.
It was the Western Allies' extreme good fortune that the Russians, and not themselves, paid almost the entire 'butcher's bill' for defeating Nazi Germany, accepting 95 per cent of the military casualties of the three major powers of the Grand Alliance (source historian Max Hastings).
Perhaps any Russian in the UK should get a free TV licence? |

My dad is 78, he wasn't even born when the war started, why do people keep using the example of war heroes as a justification for the free licence fee? And loads of soldiers have fought wars for our country since - does that justify a free TV licence?
Personally I'd compromise and let anyone over 90 have a free licence whatever their income. |

Scrap the licence and make BBC advertise like other channels. We very rarely watch normal tv mostly Virgin or Netflix but still made to pay licence for something I don’t really need or want |

You're not forced by law to pay for them though - it's your choice. If you choose not to have them, and don't pay for them, you won't be convicted and jailed. |

You can choose not to have a television and therefore not pay a TV licence.
I agree that it should be possible to choose not to receive BBC shows and therefore be exempt from the licence fee. |

"When did the tide turn against pensioners? At one time it was impossible to say a bad word against them"
I wouldn’t say it’s turned but as people live longer and our country constantly grows, the constraints on the available money can be used more wisely in social areas / groups that desperately need it.
I’ve had it drummed in to me from a very early age you get nothing for free in this life, you have to work for it. I started a pension when I was 18 because it’s my responsibility to look after myself and keep a roof over my head |

Even blind folk have to pay for a teleVISION licence, but they do get 50% off so they can at least listen to the crap the BBC spouts. As I've said further up, I just find it ridiculous that people are forced by law to pay for a multi-billion pound entertainment channel. |

I think most people of pensionable age had that drummed into them too and most of them have done just that. I sense a shift in society's attitude to old people though, brought about by many influences.

I agree, but the government won't allow this. The BBC is a huge cash cow and a way to spread propaganda and misinformation. I really don't believe enough people will pay for the service to allow presenters like Gary Lineker to get paid 1.75 million per year to talk bollocks about football or Chris Evans 1.25 million to just talk bollocks. |

Yes, it was a great move by the labour government and the country can afford it. It should not have been forced to the BBC to decide if they would have their budget cut, or cancel free licenses.
The conservative party has been good at deflecting attention away from their own bad actions and decisions onto others, eg this, plusslashhing income to councils who then can't provide adequate services as well as getting the blame for it..
In an era where care and support and bus services have been so decimated by the government, many older people are isolated and lonely - I believe that a free TV service is tiny compensation for this as well as struggling from the second world war onwards. For millions, the TV is their companionship. |

Many things are wrong but it's incorrect that society assumes that divide and conquer is an effective method to distance governments from their responsibilities to deliver a stronger, healthier population. Many single pensioners living during the war onwards shared a different culture from today, where they may have largely been a homemaker, with insufficient income to save much, if anything. If you were born before world war 2, potentially losing home and some family, I think the country has a responsibility to provide good care and support towards the end of your life. The country can afford to not collect this fee from them. They may not all have saved but they invested in your freedom, security and wellbeing - I believe they deserve better

What about those pensioners who have been robbed by the system?
And anyone struggling with heating deserves help. To believe any different would lead me to believe you've never struggled.
As for tv licence we don't pay. We dont watch the BBC and even if we did we still wouldn't pay. Its a con and waste of money. Theres so many other ways to watch what you want it seems odd anyone would pay in this day and age! |

No it should be means tested.
I agree its a big thing for the elderly but some elderly folk are very very wealthy. Why should elderly millionaires and wealthy get it for free when younger people whom are on the bread line due to illness, caring responsibilities have to struggle to have the access to tv?
If an elderly person falls below a certain income then it should be free otherwise pay up.
There are lots of other elderly benefits too that need to be looked at in modern society and see if they still stack up.

It will be interesting to see if they start taking 85+yo's to court for non payment, I think there would be a public outcry. Many media outlets hate the BBC and their privileged position and they would love this scenario. |

Should over 75s get their licences free? Yes. Bit unfair to hit some of the lowest income in the country just because the BBC can't keep up with the times.
Should we get rid of the licence system? That is a harder question, because not all the money goes to the BBC. Money also goes to national and local radio stations, who may make up their running costs with licence money. It would be nice to live without having to pay to watch TV in such a way, but sadly we live in a country where a pretty average TV channel claims to be more than what they are and feel they are above having adverts on their channels |

orignally it was to pay for radio communications but if people really researched the BBC and the fee it is governed by the queen. She even gets a cut of it so that all her private houses are paid for.
I am fed up with paying for her when her wealth exceeds any of ours!
No one should pay for the BBC the other channels have adverts to help pay for it. Time the BBC got rid.
It was debated in parliament the other day and all the conservatives wanted to keep the licence fee |

Hmm, yes - the Patagonian Nose Flute hour on once a month on BBC radio 15 is well worth the money, all the scummy pensioners should continue paying so you can continue listening to the radio. If you can afford that sort of money just to listen to a radio station, perhaps you should pay more so the less fortunate can pay a reduced fee? |

Pretty much, especially when the big commercial groups own hundreds of 'local' stations pumping out the same syndicated broadcasting

Don't let the goons in when they come knocking at your door. . Once you let these people in to check your TV set up they don't need to ask any other time they come visit. They can push their way in.
I had one who even asked to use the toilet after I said No to his request to enter my flat. . .I told him sorry, ain't got a TV or a toilet . . They'll try anything. .
Then remove their Implied Right Of Access . . Tell them they will be considered trespassers if they return to your door. . Also use your phone camera, they don't like being filmed and will take off immediately.
