The world's biggest classical music festival starts this week. Concerts every evening for 2½ months at the Royal Albert Hall in London with hundreds of tickets available at the door for £6. (with apologies to those too far away).

We'll be going to some. How about you guys?

Most of the ones already mentioned (Vienna Phil, East West Divan, Leipzig Gewandhaus, etc) .. I’m looking forward to tomw’s Janacek, and the Messiaen ‘canyons aux étoiles’ plus others...

Might have a spare second ticket for some if you’re around and local?

Just came back from our first Prom together, which was wonderful on various levels.

Tchaikovsky's violin concerto was great if a bit fast and/or scratchy in places, but still very enjoyable.

Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet was very powerful.

It was rounded off with an encore of Mambo from West Side Story. The crowd went nuts.

Elitist and inaccessible it most certainly was not. We're looking forward to our next one on Tuesday. Roll up, guys. Six quid for some of the greatest classical performers in the world!

Quite apart from the Proms, which are just a bit too far for me to fit in around work, the Classical Music scene up here in Warwick, Leamington Spa and adjoining area is very much alive and comprehensive.

Top class musicians and singers regularly perform here, along with numerous visiting musical artistes from around the world.

Yes, there are regular festivals, covering all genres of classical music.

I'm a very keen fan of Choral Music. Most of these performances are held at St Mary's Church in Warwick Town Centre. I attend at least one concert a month. That church plus the Pump Rooms in Leamington Spa host a lot of varied concerts.

We were up in the gallery so lots of dancing.

Ending on Space Oddity was fantastic. When I got home Public Service Broadcasting The Race for Space Prom from Thursday was on the telly.

Last night's NYO Prom with Nicola Benedetti (on BBCFour tonight) was magical. She is absolutely stunning as a violinist and up close she absolutely stunning to look at.

I (Luke) will be taking myself off to the Proms tonight (on my own today as the lovely Hannah is out of the country) for double helping of Sibelius.

We have the violin concerto and the original version of the 5th symphony. I know the final version very well but I don't think I've ever heard this. It appears it doesn't have the extraordinary ending that came later.

I went on Saturday and heard the Sibelius violin concerto and the original version of his fifth symphony.

Before each they segued in from an arrangement of Finnish folk songs mixed up with themes from the main piece, which was beautiful and effective.

The version of the fith was quite an experience. I don't think I had heard it before but I know the final version very well. I can certainly see why he rewrote it. I think it is much stronger for it. I kept hearing things I was familiar with going off in directions I'm not used to. I didn't enjoy it as much as the final version, but I would say that, wouldn't I?

The striking, unique ending is not in the original version which is odd to hear. The final version's ending is so distinctive I really don't think there is anything else in classical music. If you don't know what I mean, look it up on the internet and listen to the last two minutes and you'll get what I'm saying.

The concert's encore involved the audience humming to accompany the musicians on stage.

It's all available on the internet if anybody's appetite has been whetted.

I'm curious to know if this discussion actually nudges anybody to try them out. If there was interest I could put together a Fab Prom meet! What do you reckon?

I am a piano teacher and have also done music appreciation classes. If anybody would be interested in a music club in which I (or others) explain how classical music works so you can make sense of it and enjoy it more, then let me know on this thread.

"I need to educate myself on this, they seem like fun events, though would be totally lost. The RAH if that is the venue is stunning mind.

I'm curious to know if this discussion actually nudges anybody to try them out. If there was interest I could put together a Fab Prom meet! What do you reckon?

I am a piano teacher and have also done music appreciation classes. If anybody would be interested in a music club in which I (or others) explain how classical music works so you can make sense of it and enjoy it more, then let me know on this thread."

I think that's a great thread to run. It could be like the Crap Runners one but for classical music. It might hook some people. Have you looked through the old Proms threads? They have attracted a core of us oldies that remain the same and there have been various curious and interested types over the years.

I was wondering if there was any scope for a Fab Proms meet. It would be purely a social of course. Would there be any takers? I could put up an official meet but I don't want to bother if it won't attract any interest.

I think it's difficult where people have to get tickets or queue with no guarantee of getting one. Plus, finding the Prom people want to go to. It has been discussed in the past.

Yet, unbeknownst to us we were at the same Prom and in the Gallery.

I do! You were very dedicated and it saved me looking it up.

Tonight is Takemitsu, Twill by Twilight and Huw Watkins, The Moon - I don't know either.

Followed by Rachmaninov, The Bells and Borodin, Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor. I might have to record that to sing along and see if I can remember it from my choir performing it years ago.

It's almost impossible to get Last Night tickets unless you plan it early. You can only enter the ballot if you've attended 5 Proms in the season. You can the apply for a maximum of two tickets.

If you can get to five Proms between now and cut off date (I'm not sure when it is this year) then the Last Night is on 14th September.

That’s basically how it works, or you can get a season ticket and then you are guaranteed a place. I tend to go with other people and request their ticket stubs so I can enter the draw.

To be fair, it's a festival and it has a core location. If it took place in a different city exactly the same would apply to that location.

The Beeb have addressed it somewhat by holding Last Night events simultaneously in multiple cities across the country. You might want to consider one of them. They are pretty different of course, but how else could it be addressed? If they held the concerts in different locations it would probably push up costs and dilute the whole thing losing a lot of its appeal.

"I went on Saturday and heard the Sibelius violin concerto and the original version of his fifth symphony.

The famous six chords

"

Sibelius knew what he was doing when he revised his fifth. Not that he didn’t know what he was doing with the original version, but the revision works so much better.

I was thinking about that one. You know you don't have to book ahead don't you. Arena tickets are available on the day for £6. That's what I've always done.

I love the whole proms experience, even the queuing for standing tix, but there's no way I'd be able to get out of work early enough at the moment to get in the queue in time. "

Sadly too late for you to get to the JW prom, but they recently introduced online booking for promming tickets from 9am on the day. Fastest finger first applies of course, as there are limited numbers of tickets by this means.

"Just came back from our first Prom together, which was wonderful on various levels.

Six quid for some of the greatest classical performers in the world!"

So far I haven't needed to pay in advance. If you get there an hour early it's fine. I'm sure they won't sell all the standing tickets in the morning and even then it's likely to be people who would otherwise have paid on the door anyway, so what difference would it make?

It's been over a decade since I saw somebody not able to get in and they turned up with twenty minutes to go, way later than I told them to.

If you enjoyed that, there is plenty of Max Steiner and Erich Korngold music out there...

Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra did a load of recordings in the 70s (available on iTunes and others...)

rich orchestrations, sweeping strings, soaring horns and punchy brass... fan bloody tastic

The great Joh Williams (of Star Wars, Superman etc.fame) was heavily influenced by the music of Steiner and Korngold. Listening to the main title from Kings Row, by Korngold, there is some similarity with the main title from Star Wars, composed by Williams 35 years later.

It was a really good way to end my evening and head off to bed.

Tonight's Solomon's Knot Bach Cantatas is having a similar effect.

We'd love to be there for the Bach. We're both Bach enthusiasts. Unfortunately late-night Proms csn be a pig to get back from on public transport.

Our next Prom is Friday - double Mendelssohn, including a piano concerto played on Queen Victoria's own piano.

I'm lucky I can just sit on the tube for way too many stops and the late night ones are good for after a restaurant dinner.

Enjoy the Queen Victoria's Birthday Prom.

A prom usually leads to lots of time in the Imperial bar followed by a night bus. Or the all-night bar at South Ken.

How was the Mendelssohn piano concerto Prom?

I heard Stephen Hough playing the queen Victoria piano on bbc breakfast .. very different sound to the modern concert grand

We enjoyed the Prom. Queen Victoria's piano is somewhat, how to put this tactfully... fancy. It's a bit chintzy. It was interesting to hear but I doubt would have been chosen for musical reasons - only because of who it belonged to.

The main attractions were the two Mendelssohn pieces but to be honest he was very much a mid-ranking composer. There were much more inventive than him. I noticed for the first time during the week how little he uses brass which I think is curious for a composer whose contemporaries were really ratcheting up the brass since the instruments were becoming much more capable since the implementation of valves.

The songs written by Prince Albert were interesting but not terribly exciting.

The Sullivan was interesting but not as fun as the G&S stuff which were driven by WS Gilbert's libretti and drive and he was the mastermind of of that pairing.

The whole thing was wonderfully helped along by the jovial Ádám Fischer conducting who did a great job with some music that is at times fun and pleasant is not the greatest.

Last night I (Luke) went to a Prom which concluded with Beethoven's ninth. We had a good rousing chorus of Ode to Joy which brought the house down.

The 70 minutes of that symphony flew by in comparison with the 25 minutes of the piano concerto by Dieter Ammann. He coaxed some amazing sounds out of the orchestra and often had me wondering how. However, what he was trying to do as a composition was a complete mystery to me. That was some weird shit.

It all kicked off with an unaccompanied choral piece by Jonathan Dove which was very rhythmic and interesting but didn't particularly move me.

I think the concerto might repay repeated listening but it was overlong on first hearing. The Dove was not too demanding to listen to (or to sing, a friend tells me) but you wonder whether computer copy & paste shouldn’t be more sparingly used.

LvB9 would be good never to sing again.

A massively underwhelming Bruckner 8 last night..., Nelsons has really lost his ‘mojo’ I think! Next stop 4 days in Bayreuth from today for some RW, then the Lucerne Music festival to hear the best band around - the Berlin Phil, before returning for the most anticipated prom of the year - the Vienna with Haitink.. is anyone going?

Had to miss Bruckner 8 due to rehearsal elsewhere but given recent reviews of AN I wasn’t too gutted. Tempted by the Bruckner 7 as it’s likely to be Bernie’s last London gig - and there’s Yuja two days later - that’s one to be near the front of the arena for

Green with envy re Bayreuth & Lucerne...

I (Luke) went to the Bruckner, but not for that piece. I wanted to hear the Organ recital that came before. It was quite enjoyable but I thought he did a few off things with tempo and phrasing.

The Bruckner is absolutely gargantuan. I could only appreciate a piece if that scope if I had a chance to get to know it first but I haven't put the necessary time into Bruckner.

I may go to the Haitink. He's great, and a Perahia rarely disappoints.

However, my most anticipated Prom (ever) is the night before. Jeggers plays Berlioz. There's a particular reason this is so special to me but I can’t reveal that on this forum.

Sadly I won't be in London for Brahms 2 on Thursday next week, which is one of my favourite pieces of all time.

In the plus side, we have both ordered our tickets for the last night! We're just waiting for them to arrive in the post.

It's not easy to stage an opera at the Albert Hall because there's no pit so the orchestra and conductor have to share the stage with the soloists and chorus.

This is how Berlioz's little-known Benvenuto Cellini was performed last night and it was an absolute blinder! With no scenery and few props, they made exceptionally good use of the stage. The soloists were largely at the front and the chorus behind the orchestra, it was acted out in full costume with gusto. This was no straight-laced concert performance.

The music was was great and Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducted the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with wild abandon.

It's sad that the opera bombed during Berlioz's lifetime. For me it's as good as anything I have heard by Verdi or Puccini. Adding to that sadness is that this Prom was not filmed for TV broadcast and there are no plans for it to be recorded for commercial release.

This concert blew me away and was the outstanding highlight of this Proms season. I have been going to the Proms since I was 17. Nearly 30 years on I am hard-pushed to name a Prom I have ever had a higher opinion of.

So we are into the final week of the season. I thought about going up to hear Sibelius 5 this evening but didn't organise myself properly. I was planning on going to Bach Night on Wednesday but I have a prior commitment I have not been able to shift.

So it looks the the Last Night on Saturday will be our next night too. We have our tickets. You might spot us if you watch it on telly but most of you don't know what we look like. We'll be in the standing area in the middle.

I got to the Wagner night last night and was pretty impressed. I don’t think the RPO (or any of the London bands) have a lot to fear in comparison with the “glamour bands” from overseas.

This evening is my last for the season. The prospect of Semyon Bychkov, a musician of considerable profundity, with the Czech Phil in Shostakovich 8 is intriguing.

Fortunately I am now able to make Bach night tonight. Any Bach fans out there?

I don't know how a small orchestra is going to sound in a hall that size. I usually get frustrated hearing Haydn or Mozart there but Bach could be even more mismatched. I'm happy to give it a whirl though. We both love Bach.

We're in the last few days of the festival now so cone soon or miss out until next year. £6 a ticket and we might even come and say hello.

Well, it’s the Orchestral Suites, which should have a chance of making an impact - and John Butt has shown that he’s not averse to beefing things up when required. I’m not sure about interspersing these with newly commissioned works, however. It’s not clear whether these will interrupt the Bach or fit around it.

Hope you enjoy this one.

Bach Night was excellent. The forces numbered about 35 which is not great for a space that size. Fortunately the arena audience was sparce enough for us to be able to get almost to the front. Heaven only knows what it sounded like from the back of the hall up in the gods, especially when the orchestral forces were cut down to 17 for Suite No. 2. For that one, John Butt had the flute part played by three performers in unison (well, if you've got it, flaut it) which helped but it was still a rather delicate sound that I doubt would carry well.

The playing was first-rate and very tight.

The modern pieces were interesting and enjoyable but an an unusual contrast to the Baroque. It was good to see three of them were by women composers. One involved playing bird calls through the overhead speakers and there were many confused faces around me. I initially thought a bird had made its way into the hall.

Bach is always wonderful in the hands of masters like the Dunedin Consort - very lively or plaintive as necessary. I'm just glad I was very close to them.

This has got me thinking. I used to go to a lot of classical and baroque concerts. I pretty much stopped when I stopped performing myself. I'm a classically trained violinist but stopped age 17 in 1990 as i had begun to get terrible nerves and anxiety. By that point I was playing for paying audiences and it was all too much.

But a visit to a classical concert can't do any harm. I had tickets for a small one in February but it was cancelled. A box seat for a prom at the RAH next year perhaps.

We'll be there, standing in the arena. If you are amongst the few on here who know what we look like then keep an eye out for us if youare watching on telly.
