Be proud of your country as well, if you want.

Nationalism is a made up concept. It’s not real, so difficult to have pride in. But the cricket team did well yesterday.

Nah. It was a great tournament..we won by the skin if our teeth on a technicality...and the grand Prix was brilliantly driven and the TV coverage conveyed the spectacle in a truly remarkable fashion .. Wimbledon looked superb ..it was a great weekend for our sports venues ..and they did us proud

Well, it’s very historical concept, nation - before 19th century it was more about your own class and it’s rights. Noble person from 17th century would say he or she has more in common rather with another noble from other country than a peasant living in the same village. Idea of nation created bigger entity and back in time brought probably more equality within society but antagonised nations and created very dangerous ideology. As you said - being happy with who you are is great. Pride is suspicious for me.

Oh, I agree! What I mean is, Englishness isn’t real. It’s a man made concept. A few centuries ago I would have lived in Wessex and had a different king to someone in Leeds.

Don’t get me wrong, I like being English, I’m very grateful that through no merit on my part I happen to be born in this place and time. But it’s not something that I’m proud of.

Yes same goes for Welsh, Irish, Kiwis, Pakistan, West Indian and South African (plus probably a few other nations) as they are all represented in our squad.

Thankfully we don't have brexit in the dressing room. So without being political, proud day to be British

I’m pleased England won, but I had no part in them winning, so why would I feel pride. They did it totally off their own backs. Slightly bizarre if anyone takes pride from that who wasn’t involved, it was just an amazing game and great entertainment and drama, cricket was the winner not my pride.

"I saw a slogan on a guy’s car that said “Proud to be an American.” And I thought, well, what the fuck does that mean? Proud to be an American. You see, I’ve never understood national pride. I’ve never understood ethnic pride. Because I’m Irish, and all four of my grandparents were born in Ireland, so I’m fully Irish. And when I was a kid, I would go to the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and I noticed that they sold a button that said “Proud to be Irish.” And I could never understand that because I knew that on Columbus Day, they sold a different button that said “Proud to be Italian.” Then came black pride and Puerto Rican pride. And I could never understand ethnic or national pride because, to me, pride should be reserved for something you achieve or attain on your own, not something that happens by accident of birth. Being Irish isn’t a skill. It’s a fucking genetic accident. You wouldn’t say, “I’m proud to be 5’11”. I’m proud to have a predisposition for colon cancer. So, why the fuck would you be proud to be Irish or proud to be Italian or American or anything? Hey, if you’re happy with it, that’s fine. Do that. Put that on your car. “Happy to be an American.” Be happy. Don’t be proud. Too much pride as it is. Pride goeth before a fall."

No sir, you are proud of what England is, which makes you happy to be English.

It is also a country that has a past of being one of, if not THE, least tolerant of other countries, cultures, and religions.

I'm not saying descendents should be held accountable for their ancestors actions but pride is a fickle and cherry picked thing.

Unless you are also proud of England's history, which is in direct conflict of what you are currently taking pride in England now.

Well said that man. As for being English (albeit living in Wales) there is a vast amount I'm ashamed of such as our pillage and exploition of other people's. A quick check of our real history (rather than the propaganda fed to us at school) will show us in our true light. Innocent? Probably not fully.

But on a scale of sheer brutality and terror, and just straight up lack of innocence, you will struggle to find a country with a history as long and horrible as England's.

Why not - being proud of being English is great - we do a lot of good things as a country - more than many. Only caveat is that we should treat others who are not English with the utmost respect. Being English should be about others being able to rely on you for justice and fair play.....

You are happy to be Welsh because you are proud of your country.

It is (by the definition of the word) impossible to be proud of something that is not achieved. You are proud of who you are which is fine, they don't need to be amazing achievements but they were done by you, you caused them to happen through your own effort.

You can be proud of somebody else for their achievements.

You can not be proud for yourself in the luck of the draw.

"I can only be proud of something I personally achieve, being born in a certain place is no achievement. I can be pleased for others achievements and wish them well, but not proud because I was born in the country they represent at sport. It just doesn't make sense.

I wonder if you have kids, to hear you say you can only be proud of something you achieve, then my guess maybe you dont have kids.

Personally im proud of my children every day , and very proud of our armed forces. Being proud of others achievements is never a bad thing. "

You are correct but that is different than being proud for yourself because you by chance were born there.

You can be proud of others for their achievements. You can be proud of yourself for having kids and raising them to have achievements of their own.

You can not be proud for yourself for the achievement of others however.

Which is exactly what "I'm proud to be English" is trying to say.

"I hear you OP

england and Wales yesterday won the cricket World Cup and I for one are proud of that.

I’m not going to let what my ancestors may of or may not have done a long time ago dampen the pride I have for being Welsh.

Enjoy the moment OP

But you didn't achieve anything to be proud of. You sat and watched a team of men play a sport and achieve something which in fact has nothing to do with what their nationality, or place of birth is other than sheer genetic luck.

You are proud of them. It is a huge difference.

I'm proud to be Welsh. It makes no difference what sport is being played that day.

I don't achieve amazing things to be proud of each day, that makes no difference to my pride.

Where you from?

Wales

I'm always proud of my country.

You can not be proud for yourself in the luck of the draw."

Eh? What you on about?

I disagree, im proud that i have never smoked a cigarette in my life or touched a drug in my life but its not an achievement. Its just a thing i am proud of as others cannot say the same. Same as being proud to be scottish, welsh , english , irish or wherever. Others cannot say the same. I do get your point but personally i dont see being proud of your home country is a bad thing.

Few more non English too.

Can be proud of including all those nationalities in the “England” team. But more like a club team allowing anybody to play

It is the England and Wales Cricket Board and the team that won is called England.

In Rugby Union it is the British and Ireland lions.

Well done England.

Generally , I'm embarrassed by much that England, the UK, infact the human race . I have zero idea why arbitrary tribal boundaries give us anything to be proud of

I'm no more or less proud of random humans called English who won a game than I am the French engineers who built a bridge

I'm happy a team won a game can't see what it would have to do with pride ?

I generally find allowing my happiness to be governed by arbitrary sporting events and random humans to be counter productive

Bit like allowing the weather to dictate one's mood

Oh no you are right. I'm going to allow some random person who has no baring on me tell me what I can and can't do with my emotions. Pride, being that emotion.

Even though you have tried telling me (firstly) where I'm wrong and right (I think so).

There is no facts with this, using Google or wiki will not change how I feel, which I'm quite entitled to seeing as I am me.

I'm not too sure how much stubbornness has to do with it, your not going to change my mind and I don't know of anyone that could.

It's this simple.

If I want to feel proud about something I will. Emphasis on the I bit.

I take no offence with you thinking myself and others are wrong in feeling proud over where we are, where we were born etc. That's to do with us (as indivuals) and not one other person.

I hope you can see it from someone else's point of view one day.

Show respect to your capital. If you got any gripes, aim it at Newport, they are our second city.

If, as others have suggested, you cannot be proud of something that just happened, ie which country you were born in, your height etc.

Then does that mean Gay Pride cannot possibly exist.

If you're going to attempt to insult a whole nation you may be better off posting something coherent. Otherwise you could possibly end up looking uneducated and ignorant.

I remember 10-15 years back when big brother and those types of programs were about. They would always stick in that type of token Welsh man

Used to hate it and now here he is"

England did not win on a technicality. They won according to the rules/laws of the tournament. We scored more boundaries than them. That was the rule before the match started....

"

Lady luck was with us, the 6 runs which came about through the deflection of Stokes bar should have been only a 5 by the laws of the game according to one cricket journalist..

Hence we would have lost by one..

Rule 98 or something could of prevented England getting that 2nd run when it deflected off Stokes as the batsmen hadn't crossed when the ball was released from the fielders hand. That would of ment it wasn't a run 2 + overthrown 4. (Sky sports been on about it).

If your looking where it was won and lost look at Trent Boults catch onto the boundary rope. He took a few steps in when he shouldn't have but NZ won't be pointing the finger at him and neither should we.

"

there is a vast amount I'm ashamed of such as our pillage and exploition of other people's. A quick check of our real history (rather than the propaganda fed to us at school) will show us in our true light. From the slave trade, through the Great Hedge of India to the Mau Mau uprising and beyond; none of it is a very pretty picture."

Why be ashamed?.. nobody alive today is responsible for any of that... As for History.. it's subjective usually and written by the victors ..

I have no guilt for English past deeds ... Nothing for me to be ashamed of..

""I saw a slogan on a guy’s car that said “Proud to be an American.” And I thought, well, what the fuck does that mean?

A quote from the late (and great) George Carlin.

This..

Has to be the most ironic of threads given the make up of the team.

Who were amazing yesterday.. "
