They do seem to be getting a bit greedy some of them. I've seen shops with the same stuff in the window for weeks unsold, and seen Primark clothes marked up at more than they cost new! Surely it's better to get something for it and move it on? And surely a lot of people shopping in charity shops are suffering hard times and are in need of a bargain? |

Why did you want to haggle? Was it not worth the money or are you just a haggler? |

Haggling is the norm in other cultures. I think in the UK we are a bit scared of attempting a haggle to get a good price.
If you have the balls to haggle I'd go for it. Obviously we wouldn't get away with it in Currys or Poundland.
Charity shops make money hand over fist. |

You'd be surprised. Curry's is number 4 in Moneysupermarket's top 10 high street stores to haggle in |

"It was not worth the money what they put it up for .. some crazy ok lady must do the pricing up ., its stilll there what they got for free and I offered a decent amount I think "
It wasn't worth it to you. Keep an eye on the shop if nobody else considers it worth it they might reduce it |

I don't think it's wrong to make an offer if you feel something is overpriced, some of them certainly seem to be asking more than things are worth nowadays - after all they can accept or reject it. But I would not hassle them, just walk away. |

There and to the left a bit |
If it were a larger more pricey item that I felt was overpriced then I'd ask to speak to the manager and ask if they might be open to an offer and see how they react, and if they were agreeable make a sensible one based on what I thought it was worth with maybe a few quid added on as it's a charity.
Something costing a few quid then definitely not.
And to whoever said high st retailers won't haggle - I have done so in Currys and other places for higher priced items before now and quite often with success.
I also use sites like Vouchercloud to find discounts off that can be used in-store. |

Today I bought a set of conservatory furniture for £250 quid. I wanted to haggle but couldn't bring myself to try.
I even paid the 5 quid delivery fee.
I'm fucking useless. |

Isnt the purpose of charity shops to raise money for whatever cause they support. It's not the shop making money hand over fist; unlike Amazon etc., it's the beneficiaries of the charity who they support who see the money or services the charity provides....

I used to volunteer in a charity shop while I was at Uni, and to be honest it’s frustrating when customers tried to haggle. A surprising amount of work goes into prepping items for the shop floor such as sorting, cleaning (with the case of furniture and home items), hanging, steaming and pricing. And although they are donated items, the shop wants to get as much as possible for the charity.
However saying that, most will always knock a bit off some item, especially things which have been there for a while. I’d go back in a week and make the same offer, you may be luckier then. |

I'm crap at haggling and will usually pay the the ticket price if it's something that I want and is a reasonable price. However that usually only applies to clothes, furniture on the other hand I usually buy from a local non charity shop that delivers for free as well. |

Never dream of haggling in a charity shop, people get paid very little or volunteer in those shops, I wouldn’t put them in a position of having to explain the prices
No one ever haggles over the price in the large multiple retailers! Why not? All the profits there go to already rich people not charity.0 |

I wouldn’t embarrass myself or the people working at the charity shop ... it’s a charity shop at the end of the day for goodness sake They are still a business with costs etc but it’s ultimately to make money for the charity , I think the have a pricing structure and if things don’t sell they lower the price later if needed so keep going back to see if it’s come down in price but if it’s something nice I get they get what they ask for it |

You keep haggling.
I do know they are a charity but charities are business.
They get their goods for free. I know they have overheads like pick ups, deliveries, staffing and rents and bills etc but at the end of the day they want to sell it.
I think they have to say no or everyone would keep offering less and less.
I think if you make an offer they could agree to sell it to you if it hasn't gone in a month.
Thing is it WILL go SO...... if you really want it ... pay for it.
Some people haggle and then sell on at a profit.
If you REALLY REALLY want it. Pay for it.
But always haggle.

I once went to a Church jumble sale in the company of a dear old lady who saw a dress for which they wanted 75p . She offered the lady serving 50p , the lady said " no this is a church charity all our prices are already low " but my friend wouldn't accept this and kept the dress in her hand asking again if she would accept 50p as she didn't think the dress was worth 75p ... It was obviously worth considerably more and I was quite embarrassed to be stood with my friend who was haggling over such a small amount , the lady at the counter turned to one of her colleagues explaining the situation, with a look of indignation the other lady held out her hand and said " ok you can have it for 50p " but both were clearly annoyed that someone would want to haggle when the prices were clearly set simply to get rid of every item and were all far cheaper than they should have been and I could see their point , my friend ( who was my mates mother ) then handed over a £1 coin and said " you can keep the change " ,,,,,,,,, |

As far as I know most charity shops get free rent and rates so not many business overheads.
£50 for a £70 item was a reasonable offer.maybe house rules..i wonder what vehicle the top people of the charity run...paid for by the charity.. |

Like OXFAM ? Very handsomely paid ( not the shop workers ) |

I don't think it's wrong to ask but you shouldn't be bothered if they say no. They evidently think they can get more for it so why shouldn't the? If they can't, they'll reduce it just as any other shop would. |

I think it's wrong. Yes there are many corrupt charities with the MD's getting paid ridiculous sums of money, but the cause those charities support would be missing out on precious funds if we all haggled. |

Where did you hear this about rent and rates? Definitely not the case as I used to volunteer for cancer research, as a volunteer you’re able to see how much the shop is bringing in and how much is going out, and rent was the main expense. |

Most of the charity shops pay rent and rates.
I personally would not haggle in a charity shop, nor be rude about prices. If I think it's too expensive I just leave it.

Charity my arse, have you any idea at all how much the director gets payed before bonuses? as soon as a “charity” turns to a private, middle managed commission based arrangement it becomes a company posing as a charity. Age uk are up there with shelter and many others as manipulating money making machines where the profits from our good will and stupidity fund their personal investments and interests |
