Theres reportedly a twitter account from a championship footballer who has tolg his family and his football manager he is gay and he is almost ready to come out publicly.
There were 41 openly gay lady footballeds at the recent world cup and there was no issue .
Any thoughts why its an issue for male footballers ? |

I think it’s needed.
It’s far more acceptable for women to be gay....because men get off at the thought whilst they mock men for being gay.
If more fighters, football,rugby cricket etc came out the barriers would start to crumble |

Cos some people still live in the dark ages and think it's a choice and the wrong one at that.
It is becoming less of a big deal though, which is awesome.
I look forward to a day when sexuality isn't a big deal and no one has to "come out". |

We’re getting there. It used to be illegal to be gay. There used to be signs up saying “no blacks, no Irish, no dogs”. What we need is one or two gay footballers to come out. Then more will and we’ll be making progress  |

If a current player comes out and openly say they are gay it would be great.
Most individuals wouldn’t bat an eyelid, but unfortunately there are still those small minded minority that would chant and shout abuse. No one deserves to hear that so I can understand why they keep it under wraps |

Justin Fashanu, even his own brother turned his back on him.
I think the footballing world is ready for it now though. I just hope we don't see a mass of faux support for him by opposing fans. Patronisation won't help the cause.
If he comes to play against Birmingham, (assuming he's not one of ours) I hope he's met with the same derision that every straight player is. I don't want to see people being applauded because they're gay.
I also think that account is fake, btw.

yes completely different rugby is about family atmosphere enjoying a physical battle

There are a number of successful, openly gay rugby players and officials, as well as first class cricketers.
I think the issue for footballers is the attitude of some fans. They look for anything to have a dig about- race, religion, family issues. Its vile.
If you were gsy, woukd you want to expose yourself to that? |

I only tell people that I'm bisexual if someone asks me, I don't feel the need to go shouting from the rooftops. I would imagine that any professional sportsman would feel the same way.

Unfortunately, we are a long way from rugby, our fans won’t be mixed and you definitely won’t be drinking watching the game in the stadium. |

A survey was conducted last year and about 10% (I can't remember the exact figure) said that having a gay member of 'their club' would make them rethink attending or supporting.
A large section of day to day supporters and by extension society is still very bigoted and abuse is still very common for any form of minority. If it were possible to avoid that by not coming out, I can understand that.
It takes a certain type of person to stand up and shout "I'm here and I'm queer". I think that football needs it but I understand why they don't.

Re: one of my earlier posts, why should there be any question about someone's sexual orientation, it's not specific to the sport, if they're good at what they do, why should it matter to anyone? |

Ask Brighton fans if homophobia is still present in the game, they get enough abuse over it.
There are other things off the pitch to remember, football players are assets to a club. A chairman may reconsider signing a player due to his sexuality, I'm not just talking about UK players but imagine playing in the foreign leagues or trying to sign to a club with a very traditional religious attitude.
Some new sponsorship deals will appear but others companies could be put off as well.
A football players career is a very short one, if you're lucky 15 years as a striker to maybe 25-30 as a goalkeeper, not many seasons you can risk winning cups and medals or that big signing that'll keep you rich in retirement,for the rest of your life.
Football is mainly a business now not a game, supporters are atmosphere for the TV viewers, where clubs get most of their income. If any club deems they'll lose that TV money over criticism of their latest signing, no chance they'll take a risk on that gay player.

footballers although athletic are a bunch of namby pambys falling over at the least little touch rolling around like the legs broken then getting straight back up and running around the pitch with no after effects, also football was about supporting your local team for the area where you lived now it's about who can spend the most money on the foreign player who rolls around the pitch cheating I might add in an attempt to get a free kick or penalty, this I might add is normal in premiership football, I still watch international football and international rugby |

Players are told to go down now if they believe they've been impeded. It doesn't mean it wasn't a foul but they make the referee's mind up for him by hitting the deck. It's putting a stop to the real cheating (such as shirt pulling) that used to go more often.
You can throw all the lazy cliches around that you like but the game and its rules, have changed from the days when assault was legal. |

So how come football is the number 1 sport in the world, or how come Rugby isn't?
Why did they need to bring 'citing' into rugby, it isn't this gentleman's game. Isn't 'bloodgate' faking injury? It's not just football, or at least mostly in mens football. And it's not every player either.
In regards to supporting your local team, sports moved on. If your Grannies sisters uncle was from that particular country you might just get a game. Rugby is full of that as well, certainly at international level (England and Wales spring to mind).
But yeah back to the top. How come rugby is still behind football in so many ways if it's that good? |

Football's always been a 'macho' sport but I don't see why it should effect their playing ability in the slightest.
Times are changing and hopefully the other gay footballers feel ok coming out.
I'm sure there must be dozens of others in the professional leagues |

The problem the player has in coming out is the mentality of a lot of football fans we’ve all heard the sick chants about hillsborough and the Munich air crash so can you imagine the crowd if a player comes out as I’ve said it’s a problem with the type of mentality some fans have players have had all sorts of insults about their sexuality shouted at them from the stands you don’t hear it happen at any other sport some of the football chants are funny but a lot are sick |

A very high profile footballer was at a bi/gay place I was at a few times but the media were crawling around and ruined it for him. They were atrocious, pushing for information and obviously have some. The media in the UK is the dominant shaper of public opinion and they are a key reason that we've been held back, alongside older straight men in the sport who are backwards and also frightened that investments are at risk. 
Homophobic abuse at games has continued but without constant police action - homophobia has almost been treated like a somewhat acceptable prejudice. It should be dealt with100% of the time that it happens, with arrests, bans etc, to create the crystal clear understanding that it is not tolerated.
Sure, there'll be some bigots but they can progressively die out or be forced into silence. It breaks my heart seeing someone be happier, gain some freedom to then be hounded and forced to have to live a lie

There shouldn't be but the ones who are gay and playing probably don't publicise it as it could affect their income via image rights values and shirt sales. |

I think it's a fake account , but there has to be gay/ bi footballers out there , but who will have the balls to be the first ? The stick and abuse they would get would be high , the newspapers would go to town on them as well It still happens now they say "gay George Michael or gay elton John "but they never flip it and say straight mark wright or straight Danny dyer , it really shouldn't matter who you sleep with but sadly it still does |

I get the impression of double standards in football.
Racist abuse - be it by fans, players or whoever - attracts serious sanction and is rightly condemned by all.
Homophobic abuse - be it by fans, players or whoever - tends to be greeted with a shrug of the shoulders.
It hardly inspires anyone in football to be open about their sexuality. |

Because the majority of the fans would take the piss and would have made up homophobic chants.. like they did about footballers they suspected of being gay.. or just ones they didn't like.

I honestly don’t care one bit whether a famous footballer likes to have sex with other men or not. Any more than I care whether he prefers to have sex with women or not.
It’s a crazy world where we feel everyone and his wife is interested in our sex life.
