Nah. Its just used by angry folk who get frustrated when someone either disagrees with their opinion, or feels passionate about something.

I’ve been called it many a time, I don’t care, just shows how bothered they are about my opinions/views.

"Snowflake is a 2010s derogatory slang term for a person, implying that they have an inflated sense of uniqueness, an unwarranted sense of entitlement, or are overly-emotional, easily offended, and unable to deal with opposing opinions."

No it's not. It's a word. A label placed on someone else by someone else. You can see by the responses alone that words are subjective.

I think we can all agree that terms like SJW and Snowflake aren't being slung around as compliments.

They're intended as insults, which is what someone who is losing an argument, or not very good at debating tends to do when they are losing, or can't think of anything intelligent to say.

It's really that simple.

I've always been called it by right leaning, intolerant, Conservative types who end up getting a bit frustrated by common sense and attempt to shout me down even, though I wasnt talking to them.

Not really. I would define it as someone who gets offended easily, looks for things to be offended by and even gets offended by proxy!

It has become political because I think people who lean a certain way tend to get more offended than others,in my opinion anyway.

Personally I see it as an insult aimed at left wingers by right wingers, usually when left wingers are pointing out things like racism, Islamophobia, homophobia etc, it's a subtle way of bullying, but without the traditional officially recognised words being used, because the people using it know what'd happen if they used the traditional words they`d much prefer to use...

The whole snowflake thing has come about as a direct result of the political situation, initially in the states, so, I'd argue its entirely a political topic.

Don't think anyone suggested they didn't but the point GK was making is that the term "snowflake" does seem to be bandied about by the right as some kind of "proof" they've won an argument which is ridiculous.

Perhaps the left need their own word to throw back - "marshmallow" was suggested recently so I'm going with that

And why would that need pointing out to people who are more right wing? You do know there is a big difference between right and far right? This is part of the problem, a lot of people just assume right wing means all of those things you mentioned need “pointing out”.

I've always thought being offended by words which are not intentionally directed at you in a malicious way is a character defect. It would be getting emotionally flustered by the birds churping or any other noise. A better self reflective question would be why do you take offence? Why choose to be affected?

I’m pretty much in the middle politically and look for the good on both sides.

But to me it seems the right debate/argue facts, statistics and always seem to point out what’s best for the country and offer solutions even if sometimes its unpopular.

The left mainly seems to be ,,, but ,,, but ,, urrrmm ,, but I’m offended and everything should be perfect without offering solutions or thinking of consequences then go back into the safe space

Both sides need to work together for the greater good

It is meant to offend and it often does

It's normally met with a if levelled at me

People assume that political views are either left or right

I hold some definite left-wing views, but I also hold some pretty right-wing views too

Politics aside, I usually find it is levelled at me by those who need to reset their moral and ethical compass

Exactly that and as Genghis suggested earlier it's a phrase thrown out there by those who can't come up with reasoned and balanced debate so resort to throwing out insults instead, and as such has no value as far as I'm concerned.

The Town by The Cross

Hey-ey-ey snowflake

My pretty little snowflake

Ooh, ooh, the change in the weather

Has made it better for me.

Hey-ey-ey snowflake, my pretty little snowflake

You've got me warm as a fire

With the burning desire for you.

Snow was falling when love came calling

On this lonely heart of mine.

You were standing there with snow flaked in your hair.

You kept stalling while my thoughts were calling

On every way I knew

For one excuse to get acquainted with you

Then I said

Snow flake my pretty little snowflake

Ooh, ooh, the change in the weather

Has made it better for me.

Hey-ey-ey snowflake, my pretty little snowflake

You've got me warm as a fire

With the burning desire for you.

The ice was breaking and

Love was waking in a winter wonderland.

When I felt you slip your fingers in my hand.

Now snow is gleaming and

I'm not dreaming I know this is for real.

The love I have is too much to conceal.

Hey-ey-ey snowflake

My pretty little snowflake

Ooh, ooh, the change in the weather

has made it better for me.

Hey-ey-ey snowflake, my pretty little snowflake

You've got me warm as a fire

With the burning desire for you...

One of my Dad's favourites.

Can I just add I’ve never called anyone a snowflake on here. The word annoys me. I may have different views to people but I respect their views. When people get personal I leave the conversation. I’m an adult not a child.

With the burning desire for you.

Snow was falling when love came calling

On this lonely heart of mine.

You were standing there with snow flaked in your hair.

You kept stalling while my thoughts were calling

On every way I knew

For one excuse to get acquainted with you

Then I said

Snow flake my pretty little snowflake

Ooh, ooh, the change in the weather

Has made it better for me.

Hey-ey-ey snowflake, my pretty little snowflake

You've got me warm as a fire

With the burning desire for you.

The ice was breaking and

Love was waking in a winter wonderland.

When I felt you slip your fingers in my hand.

Now snow is gleaming and

I'm not dreaming I know this is for real.

The love I have is too much to conceal.

Hey-ey-ey snowflake

My pretty little snowflake

Ooh, ooh, the change in the weather

has made it better for me.

Hey-ey-ey snowflake, my pretty little snowflake

You've got me warm as a fire

With the burning desire for you...

One of my Dad's favourites.

"It is meant to offend and it often does

It's normally met with a if levelled at me

People assume that political views are either left or right

I hold some definite left-wing views, but I also hold some pretty right-wing views too

Politics aside, I usually find it is levelled at me by those who need to reset their moral and ethical compass

Exactly that and as Genghis suggested earlier it's a phrase thrown out there by those who can't come up with reasoned and balanced debate so resort to throwing out insults instead, and as such has no value as far as I'm concerned."

Unfortunately like Genghis your incorrect also

"I’m pretty much in the middle politically and look for the good on both sides.

Both sides need to work together for the greater good"

The Town by The Cross

I'm quite liking this from urban dictionary cos I didn't know the Fight Club link ........

A term for someone that thinks they are unique and special, but really are not. It gained popularity after the movie "Fight Club" from the quote “You are not special. You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else."

Began being used extensively as a putdown for someone, usually on the political left, who is easily offended or felt they needed a "safe space" away from the harsh realities of the world, but now has morphed into a general putdown for anyone that complains about any subject.

Comedians have a hard time performing on college campuses anymore because of all the little snowflakes running around that get offended by just about anything they say.

It's just a word, nothing to be frightened of. If you know its true meaning, which very few on here seem to, and you don't like it or are unable to use it properly - don't use it. Don't seek to ban or quash it though - that smacks too heavily of book burning and restricting freedom of speech. The irony is that the word perfectly describes those who are offended by it, but who don't really know what it means.
