BMI and weight loss
Jump to: Newest in thread
So as I am approaching my 40s I thought it was time to get in better shape. I have just lost 10lbs (4.5kgs) and calc my BMI which is still in the upper part of “normal”. Does anyone else think BMI is a bit rubbish? |

Bmi is absolute rubbish & out dated with todays lifestyle. Im overweight 'apparently' im 12.8st 11% bodyfat. I train once a day in the gym... yet according to bmi im overweight. |

Personally & professionally, I think it's bollocks!
It's a height v weight scale.
It doesn't take into account muscle mass, lifestyle, bone frame, and numerous other factors
On a recent medical, I show as hitting the top line of dangerously obese.
Right!?!
I have no idea, why on this day and age, it's still deemed an acceptable method of measuring people |

It doesn't take your lifestyle into account, it just calculates the basics of weight, height and whether you're male or female.. its not fit for purpose |

BMI used data from the 1920's, protein wasn't as accessible as it is now and the average height of men and women has increased.
BMI is just your height divide by your weight and doesn't differentiate between muscle and fat.
Hence why you get professional rugby players (backs) in the obese range as they are heavy due to the amount of muscle they carry compared to their height |

BMI makes no allowance for body composition... the old "If you can pinch, more than an inch" concept is probably more accurate.

If I was to try and get down to my BMI I would look abnormal.
I learned a while back to ignore it.
My aim is to sustain my genral fitness and loose weight steadily
As most will tell you shedding the first kilos, pounds or stone is easy. The hard part is the rest of it.
Good luck in the quest. |

One thing people aren't getting is there is a huge difference between what a person thinks is obese and what is medically obese (just using the terminology here) ... all seem caught up with the BMI scale verses what is actually healthy |

I know the BMI scale doesn't fit me, but have had frustrating talks with my GP about my weight
My position is, I've always had a larger frame for my height, particularly hips and legs, so anywhere below the very top of "healthy" looks and possibly is dangerously thin for my body. |

"I agree with loads of the above. BMI is a measure that simply should not be used.
The healthiest people can have terrible BMIs. "
And those, like my mother in law, with perfect bmi and super healthy lifestyle and diet can still be diagnosed with things such as high cholesterol. |

I think you might have missed the point of the thread. It was specifically related to the BMI scale, hence why that is what comments are about. |

Same for me. I look at photos after I lost a lot of weight following the break up of my marriage in my 20s. I was under a size 10 and think I look skinny and unwell. BMI wise I was in the perfect range.
BMI is a general indicator for the average person who wants to lose weight but that is about it. |

If I was you I'd go and have a body analysis done it's far more detailed. Then take that to a personnel trainer and they will help you on your way to achieve your goal. Remember it 80% food, 20% exercise or something like that. Good luck OP |

"According to BMI I'm half a kilo from being overweight. I put it down to big boobs and and weight lifting. I could probably do with losing a few pounds but not the 9kg BMI says I do."
BMI would have me losing up to 30kg |

Body mass index is a load of rubbish! There are many many factors it don't add in so there for its just an average assumption.
I wouldn't worry about it at all |

Totally agree!
I mean, I'm very overweight atm buy as a size 12 and around 10 stone I was still morbidly obese according to that bollocks.
Health, fitness and strength is always gonna be more important than weight.
I don't think I know a single rugby players who isn't "obese" and those guys are fit as fuck!
Load of bollocks. |
