Disability Awareness

Thought I'd post this thread for anyone with disabilities whether they're physical or mental.

I have Asperger's Syndrome which is a form of Autism. I do my best to cope with it but can get upset when I get stressed or feel anxiety. I feel fine when I'm with my friends but when it comes to new people, it's difficult for me as sometimes, I wouldn't know what to say and it can make me feel down and end up doing nothing which would make me feel worse. It's a good thing I have many friends who are always there to help me out and lift my spirits which I'm always grateful of them otherwise I wouldn't be here today.

Is that similar to club foot?

"My mum has an artificial leg, and as I child I used to use the spare one as a golf club "

That’s a real positive , I commend you sir !

It saved her having to buy you a golf club , and showed your high functioning initiative .

This is the kind of positive we need to see more of when it comes to disability awareness .

Great idea OP! I think it's good to hear open about things like this

Physically speaking, I have pcos which means I'm often in a lot of pain. Because it's invisible unless you're a doctor with the right equipment people often don't understand or know.

I also have bipolar disorder, ptsd and acute anxiety disorder, and sometimes just find day to day life a struggle.

We all have our battles, it's nice that we don't have to feel alone in that

I suffer from anxiety and depression and most people do t seem to understand how hard it can be to live with. It destroys my self confidence and at times I just want to curl up and die - we all need to be more open and honest about our strengths and weaknesses

Yeah. There have been times where I would feel like I'm struggling on my own and even at times doubted myself. It would feel like a barrage of negative thoughts saying I'm worthless, I'm a loser, I will never amount to anything and I should just crawl into a hole and die.

It's horrible feeling like this when I'm down.

If I was ever offered the choice between a million pounds or my mental health issues disappeared I’d take the latter in a second- it makes my life so hard at times and has caused me to miss out in so many ways

I know that feeling and would choose the same as sometimes I would feel like my Asperger's is a curse.

Totally relatable what you're saying, but makes me so sad.

Have either of you tried CBT?

Aspie too, anxiety and depression. It's very limiting at times.

Had CBT many times but does not seem to help. I’m open and honest with my therapists but I can’t get over the brow of the hill as they say

Cognitive behavioural therapy.

It's not for everyone, but it really helped me manage my mental health.

I've got autism pal, every day used to be a struggle especially as I dont have a visual disability. I've never dealt with it I've just learned to people. See I can do any maths sum instantly, but I cant dress myself, I regularly go out with odd shoes on, but my brain says, yup theres a shoe on either foot that will do. So I'm always hearing peoples comments, wierdo, freak etc. Also I cant make eye contact unless I trust 100%. Now I'm not small, shaved head, covered in tattoos, and my inability to make eye contact due to my autism, is completely overlooked, I get called rude and ignorant. When in reality, I physically cant do it. I feel your pain pal

My late wife was a Double Above Knee amputee, this happened about 8 months before I meat here. Though it got her down at first, she soon realised the only thing she couldn't do was walk. Everything else was possible if only a little more difficult at times. There were some things she could do better after than before, but that is a different subject altogether.

Yeah. It is sad that there are people out there who would choose not to understand our disabilities and consider us "not normal" or "damaged goods".

It's good that you're making major efforts to improve awareness and understanding Op. There are often posts that cover disabilities and conditions and a search for Autism, Aspergers etc can throw up some good support information. There are a couple of threads here, including one by the Op some time ago.

www.fabswingers.com/forum/lounge/761969, www.fabswingers.com/forum/lounge/896805

Our culture is now becoming more open and making better adequate provision for people, in its services etc. A lot of supermarkets now have an hour or two a week, when they turn off inappropriate sounds, to reduce the potential sensory overload, for people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, such as Morrisons, Asda etc. Sadly, the major reductions to local authority budgets, mean that support services are often minimal or non-existent This may get even worse, if brexit occurs, with negative effects to the economy

What is a pain in the backside is the depression. Despite all the good things I've done, I would feel like I'm not worth it. It makes me want to shout out to the world the pain that I feel but I know nobody will listen.

There's also a thread asking for a dedicated forum for disability & health issues similar to the camping & biking ones. It would be great if everyone could add their voices to it

I know that I am but it's awful feeling the opposite when depressed. It was worse many many years ago when I actually felt suicidal.
