Just saw a story of it on The One Show.. the Hollywood film about to be released was actually based on a man living in Devon who bought Dartmoor Zoo 5yrs ago as an investment for his children as his wife was terminally ill.. what a touching story.

Im local ish and never even knew about it. I hope the film brings in plenty of revenue for him and his family so they can build upon the Zoo's sucess.

Do you have any sweet local stories or hero's?

Have to agree, good intentions but never did i take my son to a zoo, safari parks are different but animals should be allowed to roam free, callum went to a fantastic one in holland where you could actually stay in chalets on there

Turn left at the Singing Ringing Tree

I visited 'Sparkwell' when it was owned by the previous owner. I've never liked zoos, but that place seriously put me off as you could see that the animals were all displaying problems.

Knew about the new owner, the problems they faced, his wife's illness, all due to a BBC programme etc, but it's never made me want to visit the place again.

Didn't know it was about that zoo but the film has the worst poster ever so that instantly put me off seeing it!!!

And I dunno about zoos, they're a lot safer than living in the wild. The animals get taken care of and probably live for a lot longer than they do in the wild.

I live near the zoo. I saw it in the old days with an owner who should never have been running it- it was a shambles and should have been closed down.

However, today is a different story. It is a small well run and well cared for environment for the animals. They have plenty of space and the zoo is well maintained. I am not a huge fan of zoos but this is a good one.

As for the film, if it helps publicise the zoo and bring in revenue - good times.

I have just watched the movie and it is a very heart warming family film but unfortunately it will not publicize Dartmoor zoo as it has been set in the States
