Raoul Moat victim PC David Rathband found dead at home
Jump to: Newest in thread
I met Dave not long after he came out of hospital, we both had lost our sight though no fault of our own. He was a very strong willed gentleman who's main constern was not himself or the injuries it was his family and the impact on them. Since his accident he has done many great things, but he still classes his family as his great achievement.
All I would ask is if you walk past a bobby today is smile and say hello. One good deed is all it takes. |

He never come to terms with what happened. From what I understand from the media since the incident, he shunned a lot of support and became depressive. He tried to handle it his way, and although in the end he came up short, he was a man of immense courage but he also displayed a fragility that gave indications of how it was going to end.
It's a sad, sad day, but many expected it to end like this.

"His wife had left him too, poor guy lost everything"
His wife left because he became abusive towards her, which is not a criticism of the man, but a partner can only take so much before they have to put their own sanity first.
The Police Force were very quick to still call him PC Rathbone in their eulogies today. If he was still a copper they should have done more to help one of their own.

PC David Rathband did not commit suicide - he was murdered by Raoul Moat as surely as if he had left him dead by the side of that road.
Our deepest sympathy, prayers, and thoughts are with the family of PC Rathband at this moment in time. RIP |

I shed a tear or three this morning when I heard the news about PC Rathban's death.
He sufferred so much physically, mentally he suffered too, especially when his wife split up with him. I recall his release from hospital and appearing on the news, demonstrating his defiance & courage.
It is fitting to note that he set up a charity, which gives support to fellow Emergency Services personnel who are injured in the line of duty.
So in all his pain and distress, he thought of others.
Compared to those gutless fire officers who recently banned colleagues from rescuing a man in inches of water, he is a true example of what we expect from the Emergency Services, and who so often pay the ultimate price for their selfless devotion to their profession.
RIP. |

So sad to hear this. How anyone can deal with sudden, total blindness I can't imagine. PC Rathband did so much for other injured police officers with his Blue Lamp Foundation.
I hope this brave man will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace. |

Northumbria Police did everything to help him.
He was still employed by them and a job had been created for him when he was ready to go back to work.
Whilst I have every sympathy for the man and his prediciment, I did not agree with his constant moans and groans on local radio and tv about how badly done to he was, how the police did nothing for him, how the DWP did nothing for him and only gave him basic benefits ....
I was very saddened by the original incident and even more saddened by the recent news that PC Rathband has eventually taken his own life. Nobody deserves that by any stretch of the imagination.
But on the flipside ..
How many soldiers come home from Afghanistan missing arms, legs etc and are they constanty pleading hard done to ? Generally not - they are glad to be home with their loved ones and to be alive even though their lives have been changed forever.
PC Rathband had lots of help and backup but he chose to moan and gripe in public instead of accepting the help, which in my opinion lost him a lot of support.
I'm really not sure what he expected his employers to do - Evacuate the police from the streets when they knew moat was about toting a shotgun ? errrrm is that not one of the reasons the police exist ?
I can never remember hearing that our armed forces were removed from patrols when there may have been the risk of IUD.
Sadly Rathband was the man on the street at the time and it was he who suffered .....
I'm sure I'll get any amount of negative comments over this post, but this is how I see the situation. (Mr R.)
PS My deepest respect and sympathy to PC Rathband, His family, friends and aquaintences. |
