When you spend as much time travelling as I do you listen to any manner of entertainment to break the journey. I ditched my usual ‘KISSTORY’ in favour of radio4 today and happened on a play called ‘Our Trees’ about Sheffield city councils’ tree felling programme in 2018 and the subsequent uproar amongst leafy street residents.
When the last tree was cut the inner of every part of it had a heart at its centre prompting Robert Macfarlane to write this very touching poem .... Heartwood
Would you hew me
to the heartwood, cutter?
Would you leave me open-hearted?
Put an ear to my bark, cutter,
hear my sap’s mutter,
mark my heartwood’s beat, my leaves’ flutter.
Would you turn me to timber, cutter?
Leave me nothing but a heap of logs, a pile of brash?
I am a world, cutter,
I am a maker of life-
drinker of rain, breaker of rocks,
caster of shade, eater of sun,
I am time-keeper,
breath-giver,
deep-thinker, cutter;
I am a city of butterflies, a country of creatures.
But my world takes years to grow,
cutter, and seconds to crash;
your saw can fell me, your axe can bring me low.
Do you hear these words I utter? I ask this of you-
have you the heartwood, cutter?
Have those who sent you?

That's very good and well done on ditching kisstory.
Reminds me a bit of 'being around' by Lemonheads. It's one of those if I was an X would you y songs. For example if I was a booger would you pick your nose. Best line in it is 'if I was cheque would you let me bounce, up and down inside your bank account'
If you like stuff like that poetry then Pulp's last ever album We love life is all about trees and nature. |

A world all of his own |
"To hear it read out was heart wrenching "
It is a heart breaking poem, and situation (pardon the pun!).
I remember the furore that it created, and well done to the residents for voting that council out.
I have a big oak bordering my garden that drops a maddening amount of leaves come autumn, but I'd never want it to be cut down |

"This is partly why lots of people in Sheffield now vote green.
The council greatly underestimated the will and feelings of the population. "
I can well understand that considering the amount of brut force security and police offers mustered in for the felling. Residents in the play relived the whole dramatic horror of it |

I heard that.. I get bored of the shit the other channels play and find myself listening to R4 out of choice.
I love trees, not a fan of the programme though. Felt a bit.. "Odd". |

"Yes so sad to hear about the trees and a beautiful poem, has the new council got any new tree replanting schemes in place ?
I believe so after much ado about it" Thats at least good news to hear lets hope these new trees are left in peace for people to admire in the future. |

It did feel ‘odd’ I agree, as it was portrayed as a fairytale interspersed with the reality in the form of actual recordings from the event at the time. Still very touching though when it comes to trees ... |

to be fair.. I didn't catch it from the start.. and in my defence, not being a fan of.. and finding something odd. Doesn't mean I didn't like it more than "Radio Advert". |
