If you were to buy a book for a new born - obviously to be used when older but still for under 3-5yrs - what would be the book you’d purchase?
Where the Wild Things Are?
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt?
The Very Hungry Caterpillar?
The Tiger Who Came to Tea?
What you buying? |

I've bought my little one Elmer the Patchwork Elephant books and I read them to her most nights even though she's only 7 months. I used to love the story and pictures and she seems to enjoy the books too! |

All of the above plus
Sharing a shell
Dr Seuss
Bear Hunt (standard)
Aliens Wear Underpants
Oh my, there's so many! Thank goodness my kids are all grown up! I spent a fortune on books even buying doubles so I could keep a stack out of their sticky fingers haha!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar, definitely, from that list.
Don't rule out The Gruffalo. That's also a classic for good reason. But the same author came up with my all-time favourite book to read to my kids: What The Ladybird Heard. |

Oh I love both of them! The audio books are great; Alexander Armstrong (from Pointless) reads What The Ladybird Heard and it’s fab |

There's also one called "colour me happy"
It's a poem that incorporates colours with how your feeling in a situation.
For example "When it's raining, colour me grey" and there's a little cat involved in a rainy day with a glittery grey puddle. |

I would consult with the parents to make sure they don't end up with 20 copies of the same book. I you are the parents... you can't go wrong with any on that list, really. For what it's worth, the Caterpillar is the one I remember most vividly. Although I imagine there's a ton more choice now than there was back in the 15th century when I was young. |

Haha don’t do it!! You’ll get loads as gifts anyway and you’ll end up with too much! If you do then buy 3 to 6 months as people tend to buy newborn or 0 to 3 and they won’t wear half of it lol x |

That’s not my books are great for the young ones.
We read to our lad from about two months. He loved a book
Our favourites were The Gruffallo; Guraffes can’t dance; who’s that in the loo
Never to early to read to them |

"And when a little older; My Naughty Little Sister books by Dorothy Edwards and Dogger by Shirley Hughes!"
Seriously? There's a children's book called Dogger? Please tell me that's about the area on the shipping forecast and not what popped into my head. |

The Lynley Dodd books, Hairy McClary etc. My favourite one is Scarface Claw.
Where the Wild Things Are. I had a stuffed toy of the Wild Thing with long red hair as a child
The Velveteen Rabbit, although it used to make me feel sad when I was little. Still beautiful though.

The busy little train by Anna claybourne.
I still know the words of by heart.
Sometimes, even though they’ve completely outgrown it I still read it to them.
It makes them smile as much as me
“Chuggetty, chuggetty, clickety-clack a train is coming along the track Monkey is driving - hear him say, who wants a trip on my train today?” |

"Mr Tickle. Then s/he can collect them all.
That’s a great idea to actually have repeat presents for each birthday!! "
It's actually cheaper to buy the whole collection from The Book People, but not as much fun! |

Love The Book People - I bought my niece the Beatrix Potter set (amongst others) from them. Those lovely little white books I remembered from when I was little |
