What exercise do you do and why?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Someone was asking about the gym on the going to the gym thread. Spinoff. Hopefully give this person and others achieve what they want?
What kind of exercise do you do (in or out of the gym), what are your goals, how does it help you with your goals? |

I run, mostly a mix of trail and road, between 15 and 25 miles a week.
I add in core strengthening exercises, mostly Tai Chi, which I can do anywhere.
I've just joined a gym, and hope to mix things up a bit, weight machines, bikes and swimming |

I do cardio, mostly sprints (bike, HIIT bike, ski erg), but some long form. Mostly for heart/lung health and to get my fitness up. Starting to figure out jogging.
I do balance work and other similar things to hopefully ward off injury.
I do weights, currently an upper body/ lower body split. I initially started this to be "well rounded", but it turns out I've got a knack for it and I really enjoy it. No end goal, although I think I should start making goals. They make me feel good, strong, and confident, and I love the change in body composition.
I do everything in the gym because the British weather sucks. Lol. |

Swimming, walking, static bike, a combination of yoga and pilates occasionally. I do it to maintain overall flexibility and keep myself in some sort of shape. I don't want to be one of those people who loses balance and flexibility as I grow older |

Standard gym workout where I focus on a body part per day, but plenty of the big three, squats, deadlifts and bench press.
plus I throw in a lunchtime walk most days, just to get out of the office and clear my head.

We both do triathlon, various distances and love the training and the events. Doing it together is great and obviously this keeps us both fit, in shape and healthy plus we get to travel for events, which is a bonus. It is incredibly addictive and has overtaken our previous passions for netball (her) and football (him). |

Been doing a reasonable amount of walking and cycling lately.
Mainly because the car is out of action, but at this tine of year I tend to leave it at home for the school run and me and my biy go by bike |

The gym and walking to remain healthy, keep fit and stop the weight going on again. At the moment I need to shed a few pounds because of a period of too much work, good food., the excesses of holiday eating and drinking, combined with insufficient time spent exercising. However I’ve dropped a few lbs this week so moving back to where I need to be. |

I have recently started to walk 5 miles every day ..intentionally park my car that little bit far from the office.
In the gym I much prefer the core lifts ..deadlift, bench press and squats.
Not a fan of HITT or classes. Need to get back into running as I half a half marathon on the horizon to train for. |

Play and train for rugby during the winter. Don't really hit the gym much. Mainly cardio and skills stuff. Cricket in the summer and plenty of dog walking. Used to swim a lot and loved it but work gets in the way of that. Would love to have the get up and go to hit the gym every other day but I just dont. |

I walk. Right now that's all my body can take. I had an accident last September which took a heavier toll on my body than originally expected and much of my flexibility in my back and right leg was compromised. I had 4 months of physio afterwards. I piled on weight due to limited activity and it's become a catch 22... I need to exercise to reduce my weight, but the added weight puts more of a strain on my weakened muscles and joints and makes exercising more difficult. So I walk. Some days I can only manage 500 yards before something gives, some days I can manage 5 miles. But any day I can move at all is a good one |

I’m just getting back into running after recovery from an Achilles injury. It’s a bit disheartening how much fitness I’ve lost. But there’s only one way to get it back. No pain, no gain. |

I go to yoga and pilates - I like feeling and seeing the difference in my flexibility and ability in poses. It also gives my mind a chance to be less chaotic and I feel a bit calmer for the twenty odd minutes so on the drive home.
I did the couch to 5k and park runs for a bit until I fell over a twig with all the grace of a rhino and fucked my ankle. I've started again but it still hurts.
I have joined the gym and go to spin classes with my soon to be sister in law. My goal is to get her to stop nagging me about it and wedding dress fittings and to start enjoying it. |

I play football several times a week. Besides loving playing the game itself, it's an escape from thinking/stressing and focusing completely on the game. Same for when I surf. The happy side effect is that it keeps me relatively fit |

I actually find lifting oddly meditative. What muscles are doing what, is that strain, ache, pain? What's my technique like?
It's by no means peaceful like yoga is portrayed to be, I am most unladylike while lifting heavy stuff, but the internal process and after effects are calming. |

I don’t get to ride half as much as I’d like to these days.
My main exercise is climbing and hanging from ropes and swinging trapeze, because I love to be able to fly. I can manage it with my migraines and I’ve found it challenges my sense of my own body and how it works.
Fuck, I’m 50 and I’ve realised I don’t know my left and right and back and forward when I’m upside down

Powerlifting all focussed around squat, bench and deadlift all trained twice a week.
No comps this year.
British champs next year and then European champs.
Next 10 months training is all geared to that and a big total on the platform. |

Ha ha snap! I have mentioned that before in previous threads because nothing is more fun then sexercise, but would need a private gym for that. This is one of those scenarios/roleplays I want to do. It all came from watching gym porn back in the day! Such a turn on to know can do a pre workout... and then a proper workout with getting really sweaty...

Working almost exclusively outdoors, I walk for a distance of up to 30 miles a day, probably shading just under 26 miles on average. I lift, carry, raise high and lock into place components typically weighing 50-75kg whilst doing so for the superset appeal.
I use a sledgehammer to repeatedly smash dozens of stakes into surfaces from soil, to hard desert floor to concrete.
Many other exercises too plentiful to list, involving twisting, rotating and lifting with tools that require hefty exertion.
I do this for an average of 12 hours a day, for many days on the bounce (I think 45 in a row is probably my longest straight run, but having one day off a month happens often in warmer months)
Granted it keeps me in decent nick and gives me a fair tan as you may imagine, but the reason I do this barmy routine is similar to George Formby's; to earn an honest Bob!

I walk for exercise but that's it mostly. I'd like to lose three stone but it's proving difficult at the moment as I'm lacking motivation.
I used to walk four or five hours a day and have a very physical job and I did YouTube workouts which kept me in shape and helped me lose a lot of weight but ever since I've had my little one it's been difficult! |

I feel setting goals can be disappointing. The key to success is to find something you enjoy and do it. I love cycling, swinging, running and weight training.... and I am getting into yoga. I have a good mixture and stay active. Simples

I find setting goals motivating myself. It's not like, I want to do X by June 30. More, I want to achieve X... it should probably take y amount of time but we'll see how we go. Then tailor what I'm doing to that goal. |

Portion control is key - weighing out meals and prep for the next day. Don’t get me wrong I’m no Adonis by any means but it definitely helps not pilling on extra calories.

Exercise for me has become a major issue in the past few years.
Due to avoiding a process of creating undue high pressure behind a weakened eye structure, I haven't been able to do weight training involving anything above 3kg.
In the past 18 months, studies by Physio's & doctors at my local hospital, diagnosed I have a balance problem if during certain exercise routines when I have to lift one foot off the floor, I fall over!
Equally, the levels of Osteoarthritis in both knees are so bad, I cannot do impact exercises. I can't cycle as the range of articulation in both knees is critical to the point I can't bend my knees far enough inwards to complete a full revolution of each pedal.
I'm limited to walking as long as I keep to as many flat surfaces as possible but stairs can be a problem, as I have poor lower leg strength.
All my leg issues are down to athletics and Cross Country events in my school age years through to my mid 20's. I enjoyed those times, but it's knackered my knees at my age now. |

Congrats to Ms H. Sounds like you have a challenge Mr S! Badminton is fun and certainly keeps you on your toes
Swimming/dancing will also increase your stamina. Gym wise when you do weight training go for higher reps 10-12 will also help boost your stamina. For those that have mentioned injuries... absolutely different forms of exercise can promote healing if done right.

We both do calisthenic workouts at home regularly and use resistance bands a lot. Mr ABC also does some weight training.
My aim is really to maintain suppleness and a strong core. Mr is more about a strong core and definition. But mostly it's about trying to stay healthy.

Oh my lordy lord...
Mr and Mrs ABC !!
I came so close in fabbing your football. Damn it I knew I should not have zoomed in. Phew! That was a close one
A strong core is vital for boosting overall strength. Encouragement/motivation now that is something that can literally stop someone from keeping the routine and doing regular exercise if they don't have it. I will share how I do that because as a single doing it alone can be tough.
Right, need to log off because I heard the rumours... they say once you "finger" you can't stop!! Yikes!! So close to fabbing I nearly grabbed that football
Have a great day everyone! |

We both run 3 or 4 times a week, approx 18 to 25 miles a week. We enjoy trail and road running. We are both training towards events.
We enjoy walking whether it's mountains or coastal path.
We recently started cycling together, I (female) need to get used to the seat! Have bought padded shorts for next time we go out. P is a more experienced cyclist.
P is a climber and loves all types of climbing including winter climbing.
We try to align our training with each other, to spend time together, support each other etc. Going to events is exciting for us even if I am not participating in the event I love being in places along the course to support P.

It only takes 20 mins so it’s easy to fit into a busy lifestyle.

Primarily I run, anything goes from 5km up to marathon, trail and road and am currently training for Amsterdam marathon.
I also go to the gym but have decided that I nearly need to look at what I do there. My gym is opposite my office and am trying to get in to the routine of some lunch time sessions focusing on flexibility and core strength.
I used to race bikes. Massively miss racing the track but seem to have lost my bottle. Also miss cyclocross and keep toying with doing some again. Still ride my bike though and am doing a duathlon later in the summer.
Oh and I walk loads but don't really consider that exercise, it's just relaxation |
