You should check out the British trumpeter Guy Barker if you are not familiar with him. He is so incredibly expressive. His rhythms, notes, phrases etc. are just amazing. He can blast through a swinging tune or melt you with a ballad.
My favourite album of his is What Love Is and my favourite track is Crazy She Calls Me (which is one of my Desert Island Discs). There are also great versions of The Things We Did Last Summer and Angel Eyes, and Sting makes an appearance too. |

I’ve popped the track you mentioned into a playlist for later. I’m stuck on Mingus Ah Um after denying any Mingus entry to my eight discs! I’m doing penance. |

"Chet Baker-my funny valentine.
Sam Cooke live at the Harlem square club-technically soul but has a jazzy edge."
I have a love affair with Chet Baker. I met a lover in a small jazz bar in Beijing in 1995 whilst Let’s Get Lost was playing. There’s also a Chet link between the two of our names. Good shout for Chet. |

What about his singing? I personally think he really should have stuck to playing his trumpet. I know I'm not alone.
I like his early stuff with Gerry Mulligan the most. |

George Lewis - Burgundy St Blues
Also Google the club hangover archives.
Last month I saw a great modern jazz band fronted by Clement Regert called "Wild Card"... Among others they did a jazz version of Exit Music For A Film (Radiohead) and a jazz-ska Papa Was A Rolling Stone |

"Esperanza Spalding - I Know You Know "
I saw Esperanza Spalding at the North Sea Jazz Festival a few years ago. She is just extraordinary! Amazing bass player, and songs with ease over the top of these complex bass lines. I don't know how she does it. |

Do let us know if you like it.
I would also love you to put Why Not! by Michel Camilo from the album One More Once. That's an unbelievably tight piece of big-band playing. He has recorded it as part of a trio but the big band one is the one to go for. |

"Justin Thurgur.... Former trombonist with Bellowhead... Has an interesting afro-tinged jazz album out "No Confusion"
Loved Bellowhead - excellent live!"
I never saw them... Which is daft because Justin is a mate of mine.
Great band which quit at the top of their game. |

"I thoroughly recommend The Bear Club in Luton. Small, intimate jazz/blues club with staff who clearly don't mind it if three people who are affectionate with each other attend.... "
I’m lucky in London as there’s so many great venues. |

One of my partners has been to jazz clubs on three continents and says The Bear is the best by some margin. There really is something magical about the place. |

Do you recommend any? My friend wants to take me out to a few in Deptford. After loving the jazz in New Orleans and some in Havana, I got spoiled. |

Oh superb!! It really depends on who’s on and what sounds you like. Vortex, Ronnie Scott’s, Jazz Cafe, Bull at Barnes - but great artists on at Barbican and Southbank etc. Oliver’s Jazz Bar, The White Lion, Hideaway, The Jazz at Pizza Express too! Jam Circus, Effra Hall, The Junction. And then there’s venues that do one off amazing gigs like St Paul’s having Jan Garbarek, or at the Crypt or Union Chapel. Or any Arts cafe/community set ups. Best tip I do, follow your artists of choice on songkick and get nudged for where they’ll be (but you’ll know that as a gigger!) |

My 'music guru' sent me a link to a couple of their songs, with Hayley Reinhart on vocals
I've spent hours on YouTube listening to them this week.
Work allowing I really hope he gets to see them in concert next month. I'm not jealous, much! |

Oh man! What a thread!
I recommend Silvershine by Andy Hamilton and the Bluenotes.
He was musical director in a hotel owned by Errol Flynn and then did the same on his yacht. He was a lovely guy who played sax every week at my local jazz club. Sadly he died a few years ago but his music lives on. I was lucky to chat to him a few times and a humbler man you could never meet. RIP Andy |

I appreciate you.

I know nothing about Jazz music at all, unless you count the soundtrack of the Princess and the Frog and I doubt that! |

I take my Dad to a jazz night at a local social club once a month
Live band and a usual audience of 20-25, all of whom out age me by some years
Dad enjoys it though and it's his only chance for a couple of pints
By default I enjoy it too
In terms of songs, I seem to be drawn to this on youtube ...
