Have they fled an abusive relationship, have nothing but the clothes on their back and stolen some food to feed their hungry child?
Have they been creating havoc, assaulted a teacher because the teacher dared to give their child detention for being a bully?
Totally depends on the circumstances

Actaully if you look at the lengths of custodial sentences and the offences they've been issuses for there seems to be quite a disparity between men and women. |

In principle I agree but I don't think mothers and fathers always compare on a like for like basis, especially in terms of single parenting. Its is by far the situation that women are the primary care giver (clearly not always, I'm a single parent to young kids my self). So I don't see how you can apply a blanket strategy when we don't in many respects have gender equality in terms of the differing challenges and experiences faced by men and women. Simply for most men and women the world if a different place, its not the same so how can we have one size fits all. I think though if we are going to look at the impact of sentencing on the kids we should look at the parents involved on a case by case basis regardless of gender. |

Indeed. On second thoughts it's quite likely that the guilty party's circumstances are taken into account at sentencing hearings. The fact that the person has dependents with no one else to care for them will be given in mitigation.
Your response to another poster is correct. Yes there are single dads but there are far more single mothers. So whether or not the sentence is custodial or otherwise, the length of sentence, whether it is suspended for a period of time will be considered on a case by case basis.
On The other hand if we are to treat everyone fairly... if you don't want to do the time. Don't do the crime.
I don't really see any kind of new approach here. |

This seems reasonable to me, the criminal act of a man physically assaulting a woman is far worse than that of a woman physically assaulting a man in most cases. |
