Bullying in the workplace

I have been managed by a line manager for over a year. She creates an atmosphere in our base office and isolates people when she feels like it.
I have witnessed her talking down to staff from other teams and gloating when she's seen them flush in the face and neck.
Last week I'd had enough of her behaviour and spoke to our HR manager. With the evidence I gave she said they could start a formal investigation. In certain situations I was the only witness so now feeling in a quandary.
Anyone else put in a complaint and gone through giving witness statements? |

OK... Regardless of whether Incidents were witnessed or not, a diary detailing times dates what was said or done is also considered evidence in these types of cases. To be honest, nobody wins in these situations however it may result in a transfer for you or the bully which at least reduces the mental torment! |

Absolutely keep a log of times dates and details. Witnesses etc.
As long as witnesses also are willing to make statements then that validates your case. Otherwise it is your word against hers.
It is a minefield, get some acas advice and good luck |

That's good... At least HR aren't jumping the gun... And if it can be resolved that way... Then perfect!... |

I can't give any practical advice here but it sounds like you're doing the right thing. In my workplace this situation would normally end in one or other of you being transferred if possible. |

I'm not sure they'll be able to do that but I know another witness is a member of senior management she tried to bully! |

I find bullying abhorrent. I had it as an apprentice for 8 hours a day every day. As a supervisor now, I will not tolerate it. I always speak to people how I expect to be spoken to. You are definitely doing the right thing. Stick to your guns. Good luck! |

I was bullied by a line manager when i was in the civil service...she was a real cow but got her cumupance when it emerged she didn't have a clue about the job she was doing and she eventually the sack |

They’ll always try to resolve things informally before it’s gets to a potential disciplinary, if they respond and change their behaviour after this (especially if nothing has been done/said before now) then you may not have to anything more than you have already.
However, if their behaviour doesn’t change then you will need to come forward with all the evidence you have as they deserve at least to be formally disciplined. |

Most places would often want this to be dealt in at first through a grievance procedure, particularly as you mentioned some of the incidents can’t be backed up my witnesses. These things are always difficult because unlike some instances of harassment or inappropriate behaviour it’s so subjective and the manager will simply claim ignorance and that they didn’t know they had that affect as no one said anything. If your policies and HR department are worth their weight they should be drafted to support the victims and not the perpetrators.

She's been spoken to before about her decision making and it's impact on others informally. This never had a long lasting effect on her behaviour. Now she has a different line manager and has had conflicts with her too so there's more witnesses.
I know my colleague will remember more incidents but she is a bit of a gossip and it'll get out. |

I,ve always confronted people at work if there’s been a problem . Your company has a duty of care for your welfare ,physically and mentally if there’s and issue then pursue it to it’s conclusion |

I was being bullied by my line manager within weeks of starting my job. This had a profound effect on my mental health ... anxiety and bouts of depression, which she knew about when I was interviewed. Another colleague noticed my low mood and went to our CEO, who arranged a meeting with me and line manager, during which she made up ludicrous lies about my work. At this point another female colleague stepped forward and said she had also been bullied. Plus a former employee had resigned because of it.
I wanted to give this manager a second chance and she managed to be civil to me. Then 6 months later she resigned ... rumour was because she was unwilling to work with an important client.
Since she left, the dynamic within our office has changed for the better and we've all agreed that this must never be allowed to happen again..to anyone. 2 years later, I'm still in the same job and loving it. |

You really sound like you're in a strong position but wait and see...it's a horrendous thing to go through and I wish you the very best of luck with it... And if its any consolation when it ends and it will, it does make you stronger! |

My last company tried to bully people I had been there very long time before i left and i used more direct approach with my charge hand. he had only been there couple of years i had done 15 years when he tried to tell me me my job i used to tell him if im no good get rid of me today or just Fuck off and let me get on with things. I never got the sack and he stopped trying to push me around. Know this wont work for everyone but i wasnt prepared to be bullied and stood my ground |

Record everything dates. Times and who with. I have the same thing with our general manager .. the man is a small minded man. |

I'm going in tomorrow to make a witness statement I've decided. We spend too many hours at work to be unhappy just because of one person and it's affecting a lot of people and I can't keep letting her get away with it |

And yes - I actually went above my manager and took it to three outside agencies just so I could be heard. However another incident happened regarding the member of staff I had been reporting and someone else (not staff...) and I was interviewed. It may get taken to court. |

I've got a feeling she'll try to turn it round to us, the team she manages because that's how she works. It'll be informal initially but if she digs her heels in it'll go to disciplinary. Then I reckon she'll go off sick |

That’s what happened with us. The person I was reporting is autistic but very high functioning and was very aware of what she was doing. I spent a year being bullied, eight members of staff came and left in that year, staff within our cluster refused to work with us because she was there....it was awful. She would always twist it around and blame us, and because she’s autistic my senior found it very difficult to do anything. She certainly knows how to play the system.
She was eventually moved to another workplace, in a more deprived area to work with more children, and has her travel paid for...so it feels like she was rewarded to be honest ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

Stick to you guns, be strong and proud of what your doing. Finding you have Moral Courage is a great thing as sadly most people do not. |

Update. She got spoken to last week and an informal warning was given. Got told on Monday she wasn't going to be in then later that she had got a sick note for a month so I'm now acting up in her position.

I don't wish ill health on anyone but I believe you treat people how you wish to be treated. We spend hours at work balancing our own needs along with a team and we need to make it as pleasurable as work can be! |
