True, but there are also just plain nasty, ignorant shitbags out there, too... |

When you allow other cultures into our country who do not follow our laws and equality , this is what happens , trust me it will get a lot worse until we get in a govenement that stands up against this , Birmingham is a prime example of what's going on in this country , Muslims protesting outside schools because they say some kids may have two dads or two mums in books the kids are reading ??? Where's the tolerance that they are asking for towards them . I have been outside the school few weeks back to have a look .if that's not homophobia then nothing is shouting rude words towards a group of woman holding rainbow flags who were there with kids . |

I feel less safe these days in general
The fact that I suck the occasional cock doesn't factor
Never in my life time have I seen this country turn in on itself like it has in the last 3 to 5 years
Small mindedness is not exclusive to any one religion or culture |

Absolutely. The small mindedness on this thread already is dismaying. |

There has been 'queer bashing' going on for decades, it was seen as an add on to an evening out by some and they will have undoubtedly been mainly of the white culture participating in it..
On the issue about the school, then yes there are less than tolerant views being exhibited but equating that to the increase in LGBT hate crime is probably stretching it..
Race hate has increased across the board post Jun 2016..
There is less tolerance, less empathy and its being fuelled by those who seek to divide..

There has always been violent crime or abuse towards the LGBTQ+ community, whether its got worse is doubtful.
I think that the reporting of it and visibility has risen as society has become more inclusive and attitudes have become more accepting. Homophobic/transphobic attacks are recognised as hate crimes now, whereas before they weren't.
In my home town in the 90's a well known gay man was beaten to death in the street simply because of his sexuality, something like that now would provoke a national debate, back then it barely raised an eyebrow.

To the scum who carried out such attacks LGBT were an easy target as the response was piss poor by and large from the authorities if they did report, being outed etc and that's if they werent arrested themselves..

I cant speak for the whole LGBT community but I have noticed the people in the UK in general seems to be more tolerant than used to be. I'm very cautious and safety conscious as I think most are. Shame we have to be that way but I very much doubt we will ever be fully accepted. There will always be mindless intolerant 'igits' or groups out there looking to cause harm. |

The daily mail turned off the comments on their reports about the 2 girls in London. On their face book page the comments are live and utterly vile.
I'm guessing that the demographic of Daily Mail reader is older white and middle class. But yeah let's blame Muslims, it's obviously theit fault (awaits the inevitable denials from the people on this thread blaming other cultures that this is who they were referring to) |

Someone close to me wrote this:
LGBTQIA
(In June 2019 Melania Geymonat
and her partner were subjected to
a shocking and criminal assault
aboard a London bus)
Two women, a night bus,
An unprovoked attack,
Five young men,
A vicious, snarling,
Homophobic pack,
A mindless violence
Surfacing again.
What right exists
To force our mores
Down the throats of others
And hammer home
With fists?
Take it from me:
Conventions of sexuality
Are plastic.
There can be no deviance
When what passes for a norm
Is broad elastic.
A simple plea for tolerance:
Gender, orientation, religion,
Colour of skin -
Are meaningless.
What matters lies within.
No doubt it's patriarchal
To wish to have my way,
But,
Middle-aged, middle class,
A white, cisgender male,
I say:
Every discrimination
Is beyond the pale.
Brothers and sisters
Underneath the skin,
Despite our many differences,
The veil that separates us all
Is less than tissue-paper thin. |

Basically this. If you educate children that homosexuals are sub human sinners, then don't expect the situation to change anytime soon. |

Yes, they should be taught that at that age. Not in a sexual manner but why shouldnt they learn that same sex couples are normal, why does every book they read have to be heteronormal?

Definitely. I feel much less safe and I'm having a worse time in work, but it's not because I'm bi or because I'm a woman specifically. |

I’m meaning sexuality doesn’t trump religion doesn’t trump sex doesn’t trump disability. Not, that they’re irrelevant - just to clarify. But I do think the current climate has railed against anyone with difference to the status quo. It’s legitimised some really rancid ways of discussing people, and allowed some to make others lesser for their difference and only seen through the lens of their difference.
There’s more that unites us than divides us. The divisive opening stance of discourse is *absolutely* part of the problem. |

I guess when people start worrying about hurting the living, rather than what people 2000 years ago felt was morally reprehensible, we might be able to move on as a society. Until people start having their main education at school, rather than bible study. We won't. |

I disagree that religion cannot be accepting of all, and that religious faith means an acceptance of hurting the living. That’s just going after anyone with faith, which is anyone’s prerogative to do, but I find distasteful and as intolerant as the chip they have with those of faith. Most and many of faith are not in the slightest to blame and thus how come they can practice faith without hate? It’s the same that there will be the intolerant few in every majority and minority grouping spreading bile and division. |

But there not being taught about sexuality the books say sometimes children have two mums or two dads , they don't mention gays or gay sex , and why shouldn't children be told the truth gays do exist and if you teach them it's ok to be different maybe the world would be a better place and less children would get bullied or commit suicide |

There has been a sea change in the UK, partly influenced by populist leaders, with many people seemingly failing to think much about how they are impacting negatively on others around them. Some don't care, nor respect for others. It's in part a stress response, becoming insular and is being enabled as well as tapped into, by some unscrupulous operators, including from the ultra right. It is a somewhat less safe place but also balanced by increased levels of people who accept equality for others.
We don't have to tolerate or accept anyone's toxic influence upon society, even if it is a prospective prime minister |

Nobody is teaching kids about gay sex, or even straight sex. They are being told that some kids have a mum and dad and that's okay, some kids have two mums and that's okay, some kids have two dads and that's okay. Or other arrangements, and those are okay too. And that it's not right to pick on other children who have a different sort of family.
If you have a problem with any of that, then _you_ are part of the problem with society. Would you rather return to the days like my childhood, where a kid could get beaten to a pulp because their parents were divorced, and the adult attitude was that the kid was only getting what they deserved?
Oh, and while you're invoking God's name, may I enquire whether you are a regular church goer? I am, and my God is more interested in the care and love and support that is given to children, than in the details of exactly what genital arrangements their parents might happen to have under their clothes. Peace and love, Polly xx |

To touch on your first point... the fact they were lesbians it got huge press coverage... if the situation involved a straight couple we would have never have heard about it... therefore sensationalising the whole thing... not saying what they went through was traumatising but another example of the boring predictable media we have in this country x |

Children are exposed to life and culture from the moment that they are born. There isn't any good reason why schools should not have accurate accessible information as soon as they start school. It's especially important when some people may be within a homophobic culture at home, as it indirectly teaches acceptibility, as well as understanding and potentially self-confidence.

Education if acceptance of all is key, whether it be race, religion or sexuality
However, this also needs to be taught at home and if the prejudice is at home who is the child to believe ?
I’m lucky to have a lad who is totally accepting of all and doesn’t understand why others aren’t. |
