Teenagers. Not as extreme as radicalisation, but hanging around with people who have very questionable views on life, people, school, jobs, crime, England etc.
What can be done, if anything, to get them back on the right track?
What if it's one of their parents with the extreme views- is that a lost cause?

From a parents point of view you have to rely on the good lessons you’ve taught them earlier in life and hope they remember these lesson once the allure of the new person has worn off. |

"National service would help"
I think everyone should have to spend a year volunteering for a charity before they turn 25; and those above the age should have to get theirs done (with commensurate salary support) within the next eight years. |

I'd like them to try that.
Do you think teenagers as in the OP can be changed? |

Can I volunteer for a ladies dealing with nymphomania charity? I'll forego the salary support as a gesture of my commitment? |

Oh for sure! Although there’s possibly not enough context in the OP to really know what’s going on for the teen.
I work with gangs so see lots of changed behaviour. People are only ever doing the best they can with the tools they have. |

It takes a village to raise a child
It takes an army to march a mile
Yeah
And it takes true love to stand the test of time
And it takes you babe to make me smile

Op if one of them is your own all you can do is support them and debate the issues, challenges are often at that age rebuked and whilst most will not have the wisdom of some in the later years passionate views are common with some younger people..
They may come through it as most of us probably did..
If its getting to the point of violent radicalisation for one cause then that is a personal dilemma for which peers and some others in the same boat will be a help possibly.. |

When people say that national service would help I think they need to realise what national service would be in the modern day.
It would probably some shitty offshoot of the army, run by GS4. |

Try new things, productive things, hobbies etc.
Kids (and adults for that matter) have the urge and desire "to belong"
It's working out the what/where to.

"I meant national service as in the army "
Can I ask if you’ve ever been in the army?
When I was in, the last thing I would of wanted in the arse end of nowhere is having to rely on some conscripted sprog who didn’t want to be there.
Also, being a soldier is something to be proud of that requires the right kind of man or woman. Not just any Joe Bloggs off the street. |

At certain ages, you can reel them in a bit. You can ground a 14 year old. You can’t if they’re 18. That’s when you have to rely on the ground work already done. |

Yeah it would, they would have them out cleaning the streets in a yellow hi-viz.
Meanwhile, A couple of thousand street cleansers or so would be sitting at home on the dole regaling each other with anecdotes about the broom they had for 14 years.
Don't even start me on how some of disaffected of this country would react to being called up to serve.
It's a stark racing bonkers notion that NS is the answer to anything at all.

you talk as if you know when you actually have no clue and just going on what you think, they would not be cleaning the streets at all, is that what they do In Switzerland or South Korea, no its not. You impose your thoughts as if it were fact WHEN THEY ARE CLEARLY NOT, thats not right. Having youngsters learn respect and what it is to be a soldier is better than them being on the street with gangs and knives.....but hey that is stark racing bonkers |

Erm. Being in the army is ultimately about being able to kill people.
I’m not sure what you’re advocating training them in as you’re not wanting them to do soldiering work.
Sounds like some sort of blackshirts thing...... |

Seconded, the modern British army is professional and I certainly wouldn't want to be serving with any scrote who couldn't live by the values and standards or would repeatedly fail the service test. |

True. But if it's the parent that's the issue, grounding won't work as the kid is still in contact with the parent. |

You're avoiding the issue. There are far too many disaffected people (extremists and Jeremy kylists) in this country to make NS work. Not to mention those with a genuine grievance against our forces.
If you think I'm talking like it's a fact then that's because It is. Comparing the UK to South Korea where less than 4% of the population are immigrants (I hate that word) just shows how out of touch you are.
Have you never seen the debates around Remembrance Sunday and wearing the poppy? A poppy, for one day. How do you think 2 years in the army is going to go down? It's a boat we don't need to rock.
There's a host of other reasons too but I'm not one to sit here spouting off facts.

How many young people are going to be called up per year? How much is it going to cost. How many thousands will tell the government to go and fuck itself? What do we do with them, put them in the glasshouse for their entire national service? Someone said they should be forced to do do volunteer work. Forced to do volunteer work? Volunteer work is unpaid. Forced to work for no pay is slavery. Thats a great thing to teach kids, slavery is acceptable!
The VAST majority of young people in this country are keen to learn, work and wouldnt say boo to a goose. This country has such a downer on its young people. They are no better or worse than any other countries young people. When they do well in exams, the first thing we say is the exams have got easier. I might be 48 years old, but thank fuck I havent forgotten what being young was like.
There are some fucking miserable hypocrites on this site. I hope they dont come into contact with young people.
