Any advice on pain relief?

Things tried

Turmeric = no effect

Glucosamine = possible mild effect

CBD oil = small effect

Co-codamol = dulls the pain but doesn't alleviate it

Naproxen = effective in the short term but has unwanted side effects.

Cod liver oil = no effect

We eat a diet high in olive oil, fish and fruit and vegetables.

Unpopular opinion!!

I have arthritis and with some deep discussions with my specialist I went vegan/plant based.

I was in remission for a year and now get the odd mild flare up. But it's a lot more manageable than it was 18 months ago.

Dairy is a massive trigger according to research done by arthritis UK as is red meat. Also tomatoes but I'm yet to give them up!!

Alcohol is also a trigger but again I've given up a lot I can handle mild flare ups in exchange for wine.

Also etopan which is POM NSAID specifically for Arthritis is really helpful but you MUST eat with them or you'll be really poorly.

I suffer from psioratic arthritis, and although I take tramadol as a pain killer, it makes me drowsy and when I nod off in ma chair, it's not proper sleep though.

Dietary wise, I've tried several things to almost no avail, although I realise my condition is similar to rheumatoid arthritis, there are several differences.

Devils Claw Tablets.

I took them when i had a gippy knee from twisting it when walking my dog. Bloody amazing, made it bearable till my knee got better.

Check it doesn’t react with other medication.

Honestly, i found them amazing. Holland and Barrett. Get the high strength ones.

Stop eating fruit and seed and vegetable oils, drastically reduce carbs and increase healthy sat fats. No, sat fat doesn't cause heart disease.

I suffer with Osteoarthritis in both knees and my right hand & wrist.

I'm prescribed Zapain, a Codeine Phosphate & Paracetemol mix tablet of which I can take up to 8 a day; I usually only take 3, maybe 4 on a bad day, as they are sleep inducing.

I can't have anything stronger due to possible clashes with other medicines I take for Diabetes and Cholesterol.

But, I do use the pain relief Deep Freeze Gel which I find effective and it doesn't smell strongly. Voltarol did not work for me at all.

What I do find effective, is using a TENS Pain Relief unit. Zapping the painful areas for 2 x half an hour sessions on each affected part, gives me up to 24 hours great relief. Boots sell them, though they can be expensive, so try Lloyds Pharmacy (bigger branches) as their own brand types are good & reasonably priced too.

Ironically, I'm about to commence a Pain Relief Medication Relief study, licenced by the NHS, which will be a monthly injection, on same style as a Flu Jab injection. It will last for a year. I already have heard of someone who has had a marked improvement in their pain control in only 4 months.

Here's hoping it does the same for me!

Yes, apparently it will be at least three months before he even gets a letter telling him when the appointment is. Results from scans and x-rays done three weeks ago still aren't at the surgery. GPs just seem to shrug their shoulders.

Ah ok, well maybe it's worth having another appointment with a specialist to see which course of action to take.

I think some people become dependent on drugs as a way out without contemplating the consequences that they will have on their body. I was taking Codeine like Smarties at one stage

My GP is marvellous & has got me into hospital for tests etc. The Pain Relief trial he put me forward to, has conducted a full health screening already, including knee MRI's so they can accurately pin point what monthly dosage to give me.

Steroid injections are usually only done once per joint but it needs great skill by the doctor to accurately inject exactly into the joint, to achieve maximum efficiency.

You could also try a method usually used for sprains, strains and pulled muscles, especially upon waking up each day (which badly affects my hands).

Fill 2 bowls with water, one is freezing cold and the other with water as hot as you can cope with.

Alternately, plunge the hand & or soak the affected area with a cloth into hot and flex for 20 seconds, then transfer to the cold water.

Repeat for about 5 minutes; it seemingly allows better blood flow and stimulates nerves and nerve endings plus surrounding tissue.

That method was recommended to me by the Physiotherapists at my local hospital. It certainly works for me, especially after waking up, and my hands feel like someone is forcing red hot pokers up each finger!

I use Zapain (30mg codeine/500mg paracetamol) and 400mg Ibuprofen taken together plus ketoprofen gel

Have to take Omeprazole and Ratinidine to counteract the Ibuprofen's effect on my stomach but this mixture works for me.

The problem is everyone is different so you have to experiment to find out what works best for you.

Let's hope so!

Ok, thanks

That method was recommended to me by the Physiotherapists at my local hospital. It certainly works for me, especially after waking up, and my hands feel like someone is forcing red hot pokers up each finger!"

It's fairly difficult to use that method on hips and spine but we could give it a go

"Any advice on pain relief?

Things tried

Turmeric = no effect

Glucosamine = possible mild effect

CBD oil = small effect

Co-codamol = dulls the pain but doesn't alleviate it

Naproxen = effective in the short term but has unwanted side effects.

Cod liver oil = no effect

We eat a diet high in olive oil, fish and fruit and vegetables.

Yes I agree. It's partly the reason I've asked on here to see if there are any new ideas

Interesting how you say you have to use Ranitidine and Omeprazole, the purpose of which I know so well.

I used to be on them, but my GP took me off them and replacing with a 15mg tablet called Lansaprazole. I need only take one a day before I have my breakfast and it does the trick.

Exactly, but there are only so many options. That's why we should put a stop to chopping down the Brazilian rain forests

"I suffer with Osteoarthritis in both knees and my right hand & wrist.

One point. Don't use the Tens Pain Relief unit on spinal areas unless approved by a GP. But enclosed notes with the product when bought offer advice too!

I've used Celafen Cream for joint pain & been very impressed with it. Only a small tube but you don't need to apply much & a little goes a long way.

Google it & see what you think.

Hope you find something that helps soon!

Thanks for your advice. We've had a tens for years I used to use it for spinal stenosis.

Curcumin, which is the active element of turmeric, but make sure the supplement includes black pepper which enhances absorption, or so I'm told. I do find that if I forget to take it my symptoms worsen.

Currently about to embark on a vegan diet as my daughter wants to, I suspect eliminating dairy may have a beneficial effect for me. I have RA.

Incidentally, small amounts of red wine (I don't partake myself) have been reported to help due to containing resveratrol. Obviously alcohol in large amounts is inflammatory!

Resveratrol is available as a supplement also.

Incidentally, you appear to have a Mediterranean type diet, I have read that plants of the nightshade family -which includes peppers and tomatoes- are sometimes a trigger for inflammation.

Yes, this is part of the problem there's so much information much of it conflicting that it's difficult to navigate. I love tomatoes and eat a lot of them but Mr N doesn't.

We will sort through all the very helpful advice offered here and see what happens

It's certainly an option but we're not there quite yet

It's a bit of a quandary when you've got arthritis and type 2 as well, as to what your diet should be

Sorry if someone already mentioned it in thread but I suffered with arthritis years ago. Didn’t really get anywhere with doctors so tried acupuncture. Definitely recommend it worked wonders for me

Exercise especially in the target areas, its proven to reduce the pain, plenty of information on the web and NHS choices but speak to your doctor first before starting anything.
