I've just read an article about this. A few years ago, a young man started a sub group on reddit called this, it's aim was and still is to encourage and facilitate active debate through the basic rules of; "explain your reasoning, challenge the proposition, but don't be rude or hostile. Original posters are required to engage and to truly consider counter-arguments."
Personally I think it's a fantastic premise and should be the basis of any online discourse. What do other folks think?

I like the idea if it promotes more effective inquiry and dialogue, particularly if that leads to constructive action. |

I agree, that seems to be the intent and the result. Something like that within the forum rules would be a good idea to my mind. |

"I like the “change my mind” vids on YouTube with Steven Crowder"
I've not seen those. I was thinking of something that would be of active benefit to this site though. |

Think debate is always good but on fab it would probably get messy.
That Steven guy is quite conservative and not particular my cup of tea as I’m pretty neutral but the vids are good debates |

I’d love to see it on here. Enforcing it through the forum rules could be a real moderation challenge though, |

Would make for much more enjoyable debate if people kept that premise at the forefront of their mind. It’s good to understand others reasoning and consider whether it’s something you agree or disagree with. |

"I like to take the opposite view to one I actually think in discussions sometimes. Its an interesting thing to do and does get you to think. "
Completely agree, always good to hear both sides openly and not be blinkered by what you think you know.

That's the technique that people teaching debate use to enhance those skills. It's also a good way of looking outside of yourself and opening up your mind. |

Exactly. Having views and opinions is fine, expressing them with reasoning is far better.
Just stating "that's my view, because it is" or "it's my view and it's right" closes discussion and leads to resentment if that's challenged. Surely there should always be the 'why' discussed? |

I'm not so sure that it would be, the current rules are uneven and easily circumvented, these rules are far clearer about personal attacks. |

Totally.. Ste said exactly this a few days ago.. it’s the difference between discussion and argument.. and not being fearful to challenge yourself and others on controversial topics that do need discussion in order to dispel myths and ignorance. |

I agree with you, many people steer away from the weightier subjects because they dislike the arguments or recriminations. Personally I think those subjects are more important and valid it's just that the discussion and debate needs to be less personal.

I think the issue with that is that people have short memories around here and take things very much at face value. If I threw a few hand grenades around for a few days, very quickly I'd be persona non grata.

"So. Start a decent thread someone and let the debating begin
Doesn't this count?!
No. We need something juicy to sink our teeth into."
I think someone has started one, although I would say that a bit of a preamble as to the rules of engagement or at least citing this thread would be a good idea. Otherwise it's just going to go down the usual route of accusal and acrimony.

It's an excellent premise for discourse in an ideal world. Having the ability to state a point of view, back it up with well thought through supporting points and then being open minded enough to consider others conflicting views, and the weaknesses / contradictions they might find in your views, without taking offense.
Unfortunately, too many people become defensive and angered by mistakenly perceiving that a critiquing of their opinion equals a criticism of them as a person.
It's also understandable that too often on here, people get riled by those negative people who enjoy deliberately and calculatingly posting personalised abusive responses in order vex, either fir their own strange entertainment or so as to create an argument where they can vent themselves.
Like all great concepts, it's biggest challenge OP is human nature. |

I agree with you on that, I'm not saying that it's a perfect system, however, debating the issue rather than the poster would be so much better than what we have at the moment.
Perhaps I'm an idealist though
