It smacks of affected friendship to me, really they hate you and will be talking about you behind your back in 30 seconds, but to all the world it appears you are special. I dont like it |

"Not bothered by that one.
Cant say I'd call it derogatory. Not sure what you mean by that? Surely it's just short for honey? How is that derogatory? "
That’s why I’m asking. I don’t think the guy meant it in a derogatory way but to me it just makes me sounds like a dumb bimbo which I personally didn’t like.

"I call everyone I like hun, never really thought it might be offensive.
I would so hate to offend anyone, well this has made me think !!!! "
I don't mind from someone I like, or as a pleasantry.
In messages on here it's like, you don't know me, stop it. |

I don't even like like being hun by friends/family. |

It’s never okay to call a woman ‘Hun’, ever.
It’s lazy, sleazy and shows the bloke has a fuck it, this’ll do type attitude. In a first message it deserves a block and delete. |

There and to the left a bit |
I think any pet names (hun, babe, darling, sweetheart etc) being used depends on the context and circumstance - personally I very very rarely use them, and when I do it will be with people I know well enough to use them with.
And I think that last part is the key to whether they are appropriate or not - using them in a first message when you don't know someone is making a huge assumption and comes across very insincere - using them with someone that you have built a connection and rapport with and know well enough to feel comfortable using them, and comfortable that they will be well received, is somewhat different. |

"Hmmmm
Wonder if this a regional thing, I actually call men and woman it and it's meant in a warm friendly way!
Could be, I call my sisters hun "
My sister calls me hun, she knows I hate it so does it to wind me up! |

It's definitely regional.
It used to bother me, but if I let it now, living in Manchester, I would have had an aneurysm by now. |

Very dependent on the person saying it as to which side or the sweet/derogatory divide it falls. Quite regional too in meaning. My auntie always greets me with "hi hun" as do a few people I know. Similar to 'hi luv' in my eyes which can either be good or bad depending on context. |

Honestly, pet names on here don't bother me. People use different ways to speak, it's probably the way they were brought up? Some people use "darl", sweetie blah blah. I don't sweat the small stuff. It's the idiots that catfish and ghost that piss me off more! |
