Jo Brand is very smart and insightful .... but not all that funny in my opinion.
So I'm wondering at the context - is she contrasting the kind of weak cowardly "masculinity" that drives men to disfugure women who have the gall to reject them - with the behaviour of a few wags who will throw a milkshake over Hardon of Aragon or whatever that alt right prick calls himself.
The reaction of horror in the press is about the same over both actions - so maybe they might just as well use battery acid? |

BBC defends Jo Brand over 'battery acid' joke
The comedian, a guest on BBC Radio 4's Heresy on Tuesday, joked about throwing battery acid at "unpleasant characters" rather than milkshakes.
Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, who was hit by a milkshake last month, said "the police need to act".
The BBC said the jokes made on Heresy are "deliberately provocative as the title implies".
It added they are "not intended to be taken seriously."
Brand, speaking after Mr Farage and a number of far-right European election candidates were covered in milkshakes during campaign walkabouts in May, said "Why bother with a milkshake when you could get some battery acid?"
The comic then went on to immediately make clear she was joking and criticised the milkshake stunts.
"That's just me. I'm not going to do it," she said. "It's purely a fantasy, but I think milkshakes are pathetic, I honestly do, sorry."
Her follow-up comments were edited out of widely-shared clips on social media.
Mr Farage said the comments amounted to "an incitement to violence".
At the end of show, host Victoria Coren Mitchell said she hoped Brand's remarks had not caused offence, but reiterated that the long-running series had been set up to "test the boundaries of what it's OK to say and not say".

Just hope nobody throws acid on Jo, Nigel or anyone else. Even milkshake is pathetic tbh. If you disagree with someone then ffs debate them, if your view is valid then it'll carry, OR don't and shuddup. Far too much nonsense nowadays with ppl accusing others of racism (or other isms) and then saying let's harm them - it's dumb and cunty! No doubt it will get some undeserving publicity and help with the great divide.... |

I do like her and she is funny. She's made a career by being intelligent and having interesting life experiences and working hard to be where she is. Some of her quips are directed at 'those' men who attempt to put her down - she retaliates .... and some of the material gets into her sets.
She's written books and contributed to very many sit coms , panel shows and charity events.

Classic Joe Brand jokes:
What's my favourite kind of man? A dead one.
How do you find your way to a man's heart. Through the hanky pocket with a bread knife.
She may well be all the things you have said, however the fact is her early career is from violence towards men.
As a comic she doesn't really have a lot of material. |

And if she's intelligent well she not intelligent enough to know you don't go on TV staying use battery acid instead of milk shake, because some nutter might actually go out and do that.
Considering all the acid attacks over the last few years it's a very stupid thing to say. |

I think farage would have much more of a case for uproar..... it he himself hadn't been caught of camera talking about taking "a rifle to people if mp's didn't deliver on brexit"......
so once he stops being hypocritical and gives up the faux outrage.... sure! |

Trouble is Pants is that any quip gets instant reaction. They are falling like flies. Question was whether punching up is actually ok even when possibly offensive. |

I listened to the whole show yesterday and hardly noticed her comment, other than thinking it was funny. Sound bites work very differently of course.
The point she made was made in a humorous way, like the other points she made through the show such as how prevalent and damaging it is for body shaming, mental health issues etc.
Those things were made with insight and compassion as well as being funny. Strange how the media doesn’t peddle its mock outrage at that too.
Perhaps it’s because they only do it to sell newspapers rather than what’s actually important? Who knew? |

Not acceptable, people democratically voted for their leaders. If you do not liek them then vote them out mot milkshake or acid attack them, that is common assault. |

Agreed, which just shows why we shouldn’t take things literally.

That's the worst "joke" I've ever heard, let's ask the actual people
Who have been acid attacked see how hilarious they find it.....the woman has overstepped the mark there.... |

Has no one here ever said something they dont actually mean... I could kill them...could slap you.. wanna punch you in the face. Can you all honestly say you have never made an inappropriate joke about a woman, a "retard" etc, or thought? If you listened to the show you would of heard it said in the moment and how tounge in cheek it was. Obviously a slow news day.
Also she is far from stupid. A stupid person wouldn't be able to qualify as a psychiatric nurse..nor would they be able to practise for 10 years or so. |

The Jo Cox Foundation should have had a view on this, but I see nothing about it on their website.
A quote from Jacqui Smith of an earlier date however;
JACQUI SMITH: JO PAID WITH HER LIFE BUT POLITICIANS NOW LIVE IN DAILY FEAR OF ATTACK
Presumably Jacqui will be calling out Jo Brand ??? |

Totally different to some men who on a daily basis inflict actual physical violence on women and week in week out women are murdered by men..
And that's not a dig at yourself but male comedians for decades have made jokes about a lot of other contentious and sensitive areas..
I heard it live and yes I did think ooh that's going to ruffle a few feathers and of course for anyone directly affected its not a subject that's funny at all..
But neither is r#pe, paedophilia and the sickening fact that men batter and kill their partners..

In my view, this is something she should have, perhaps, given a little more thought to before opening her gob.
An error of judgement? Putting it mildly.
I think this is a case of a joke gone wrong.
I can sort of see the point she was trying to make, I just think her choice of words could have been better |

I think the right are playing some elements of the left at their own game crying hate speech. As to whether that is true or not you have to look at the intent, context and Jo Brands history in terms of opinions, actions and things she's said in the past. I do have a feeling that such words from someone of the other end of the political scale would have been taken very seriously.
I don't think one kind of hate is ok and the other isn't. Just we need to be sure what is behind the words not the words them self. |

It's comedy, she clarified immediately after the joke that she does not condone or support actual violence to these people and she thinks those that do, including the milkshake throwers, are idiots.
Farage is a lying, elitist scumbag but the way to beat him and his ilk is not violence, it's proving through debate and facts that he is indeed a lying, elitist scumbag. |

There are 50 people in a room. One of them is an acid thrower and is intent on maiming a politician. The other 49 wouldn't harm a fly.
A comedian tells a joke which carries the message 'do something radical about politics NOT wanky milk chucking'.....
Some people laugh, some people groan, some people say 'not her again' and some actually UNDERSTAND that it wasn't a fucking instruction and those with difficulties tut and strut......
There are still 50 people in a room and still only one of them is psychotic enough to want to to physical harm to a politician. |

It's wrong and should not have been said, if for example 100,000 people watched that on TV, and one is hateful enough to think about doing it, but also fearful of the punishment and does not carry it out, that is one thing.
But the press, socal media and everything else combined ends up with 30 million hearing, reading or whatever then that one person turns into 300 potential attackers, 300/1 now and it only takes one to destroy someones life, and that's one to many.
In today's age of technology and information it should not have been said.
That's just the way I way it up and look at it my view only right or wrong. |
