Dressing smartly used to make me feel empowered, but now I’ve retired most of my smart suits have gone to the charity shop. I never had made to measure but liked Gieves &Hawkes, Austin Reed or Aqua Scutum off the peg, teamed with a good quality shirt, Hermes tie, collar stiffeners, Fendi belt, silver cuff links and Loakes or similar black brogues or oxfords. A very cut down wardrobe now suffices for the occasional wedding or more frequent funeral.

I think I prefer a nice shirt and trousers over suit. A suit covers up too much.

I spent too long being made to wear a suit in a hot, stuffy office to ever feel comfortable in one. Also I need to spend a lot of money on tailoring before I can look good in one as most off the peg suits are unflattering. If I absolutely have to do black tie it's easier to hire than buy, otherwise a shirt and tie is about as formal as I go.
