I agree our elderly deserve concessions, but from a business point of view, it is a service, and why should some people get it free. If you use any other service, you have to pay.
I feel society should just treat and fund them better full stop. |

Few in number unfortunately as to have fought there you'd need to be 90plus.

I suspect part of the reason is that far more people are alive over 75 than when the free licence was introduced and it's costing way more than anticipated?
But watch out for the propoganda subtly put about that the elderly are all living the life of Riley to the detriment of the young. This is the thin end of the wedge in my opinion |

Unfortunately some elderly people like my father of 89, live on their own and the tv is a bit of company for them and no he's not well off... |

I agree you should pay for a service but it is a service they have not necessarily chosen. I have a tv and therefore pay for a tv licence, but I cannot tell you the last time I watched BBC. There are far more channels available than just the BBC now. |

"With internet streaming ect now I'd rather they just abolished the license fee completely and put commercials on bbc" You could get quite an advert on those bad boys.

It's a disgrace! They've worked, paid tax, paid stamp/NI and deserve something back. Their pensions are taxed again even though taxed when earned. Again those who have sat on their arses on hand outs never paid a penny into the system get their free glasses, prescriptions and still free tv licences. Shame on this tory government |

More and more political threads in the lounge, excellent.
The licence fee should be optional. The technology exists to not receive the channel if you choose to opt out.
The BBC news is very cringe worthy these days. It certainly is not impartial, depending on what side of a political spectrum you come from. I would hazard a guess that every programme the BBC makes now has a political undertone. Be it comedy, drama, documentary or news. Subtle brainwashing in its purest form, propaganda programming.
Personally I haven't watched it for over five years and I feel so much better for it.
I understand some people love the BBC, that's fine by me, then others who don't should have a choice. |

The government asked the BBC if they would take over the licence fee and it was given permission to raise the licence fee if it said yes. The BBC then said we will take it on but had to keep the free licence for the over 75, BBC took it all on with them conditions. They have now broken the promise they made with the torie party the government. They are all to blame and will do anything for money. |

Agreed
My Dad is not a drain on society, we, as a family, look after his needs ourselves. He went into hospital last year, when he had a fall, this is the first time he had been to hospital in 85 years. He goes to the GP once a year for his flu jab. Worked hard in a manual job until retirement and that used to help his elderly neighbours, after that, with little jobs. I don't think a free licence for him and many like him, will break the bank |

Apparently its costing the BBC 745 million a year! And that's just over 75s! Imagine how much revenue they generate form the TV licence? Just as boris Johnson announces if he gets in hes cutting tax for the rich |

It's my understanding that it doesn't cost the bbc anything at all. The government pay those licences.
If the over 75s now have to pay. It is the government that is saving the money. The BBC is laughing all the way to the bank.
Either way I think it should be scrapped. It's a lot of money to some people.
I'll not be paying next time it comes round. I don't watch freeview and can live without recording things. Lots of popular bbc programming now ends up on Netflix so I really don't see what I get out of paying the licence. |

"Don't forget one day we would all qualify for them
Free bus passes next ?"
I'm surprised this hasn't already been done.
If they moved the money about (I know it isn't that straightforward) and the money went into care I would support cuts in one area to subsidise another. |

It was Gordon Brown in 2002 who brought it in. The Govt pledged in their last manifesto to keep it. But now they have put the cost on the BBC, and it would be about 20% of their budget. If the BBC tried to pay the lot, we would lose most of local radio and first class drama and children's tv and GOK what else.
So thy have offered to pay for any pensioner on benefit. It seems many pensioners who could claim this don't. So all pensioners on a low income should apply for the benefit, which the Govt will have to pay, and get the free licence still |
