Have a real love hate relationship with them depending on how ripe they are.
1- green and rock hard
2- just turned yellow but still hard
3- yellow and soft
4- yellow with brown spots
5- more brown than yellow
6- totally brown and just mush
I can only do number 2. You? |

"Avoid them mainly, slightly allergic, they make my mouth itch "
Wow. Never heard of anyone reacting badly to bananas! I thought they were one of these super foods everyone could eat. You’re special |

2 or 3 for me.
Used to buy them from the supermarket & they were mainly green, took them home & it seemed almost overnight they went through the nice phase to the brown spot or beyond stage Now I use the local independant greengrocer & it's all so much better quality (& much less plastic) |

Next time you have a BBQ try this.
When you have finished cooking and the remnants of the charcoal is still warm/hot chuck an unpeeled banana or 2 on to the grill. Keep turning them until the skin is completely black (but not burned to a crisp)
When they are black remove from the grill and make a long cut lengthwise and then open. Pour a good measure of your favourite liqueur (Tia Maria is a good one) into the cavity then fill with spray cream.
Scoop out the result with a spoon for the best BBQ desert you will ever eat. |

I will try this although my first thought is alcoholic baby mush... |

I bought maself a banana tree a couple of weeks ago, you hang the bananas up by their stalks so that they ripen all round, rather than just going black on one side when you put them in a fruit bowl or whatever. I tend to buy about a weeks worth, but have to hide them when ma mate comes round cos he is |

"Other fruit makes bananas ripen quicker - as do car exhaust fumes bizarrely
No, I don’t know why I know this either "
It’s the other way round. Bananas (and some other fruit) give off ethylene which causes other fruit nearby to ripen. It’s why you shouldn’t keep bananas in a fruit bowl but separate them. |

My mum and dad used to go through mountains of bananas.
If the banana stockpile ever looked like it was less than a foot high one or the other of them would go on an emergency banana dash.
You knew if my dad liked you, if he offered you a banana |

6 as I only use them for Banana cakes.
Slightly off topic, The year is 1946, the war is over but we still have American Soldiers billeted in the town, a small gang of us 6 and 7 year olds used to hang around them to get sweets and chocolate, one day we were given some Bananas, never having seen a Banana before we were unsure what to do with them, after a few minutes amid much hilarity a kindly G.I. showed us how to peel and eat them. Happy days |

Banana Stages
1. Stare at it, willing it to ripen
2. Ahh, it's ready to eat
3. OK stop ripening now - adds custard, or puts in sandwiches
4. Smoothie time - willing them to stop ripening
5. the No Go Zone, look with disdain
6. Banana loaf |
