Is t it weird how we wait until most of the survivors died through old age before we make a fuss and say thank you.?
Wouldn’t it have been better to have showed our gratitude years ago? |

Didn't we 'make a fuss' at 50 years - presumably 40 (I was 3 and don't remember) and certainly 60. It's an important anniversary but it's hardly the first. And there are commemorations every year on 5/6 June. |

I think this year is more poignant as it’s very possibly the last major remembrance anniversary where most of them will be alive. More and more are in their 90s.

A fuss is made every 5 years ... this one is being more celebrated as it is potentially the last time actual veterans will be there |

Yes exactly, I think as a country we have and always will remember and mark D day. |

I agree. I just find it odd that the OP writes as if this is the first major commemoration. |

"I thought we show our gratitude every year on Remembrance day?"
Indeed we do.
Not wishing to be picky, but I think the thread title is a little insensitive.
We are not celebrating D-Day. We are commemorating it. Slight difference |

"I think it’s odd that there wasn’t a British memorial there and that a veteran had to fund raise to get the ball rolling. Many other countries have memorials there. " that's because we didn't want to upset z germans

It was called VE Day. Victory in Europe. That was the real celebration; this is the commemoration. |

"Funnily enough, I just heard that the May Day bank holiday in 2020 will moved back 4 days to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
" What a celebration that will be, and a time to remember. |
