A friend and I were having a discussion the other day about our musical tastes .
He only listens to Heavy Rock and that's it .
I love Rock and have been to rock festivals .
I love dance and have been to many trance clubs and festivals back in the day .
And I love some contemporary music too .
Do you think its narrow minded to only like one genre of music ?? |

"Nah, you can't help what you like.
It's narrow minded to say that only what you enjoy is good I think. " Oh definitely. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, I was just curious if anyone else was like it |

It's certainly not open minded (as in being open to other genres) but then it's also not narrow minded either - as Eileen says if someone knows what they like then it's fine to stick to it in the same way as we stick to any other number of things in which we have a choice (clothing type, food preference, brand preference etc).
It's when someone writes anything else off as not being very good, apart from what they like, that they become completely narrow minded |

Totally this.
It's one thing saying I like bla bla bla and accepting others like something different that you don't, but saying something IS shit, rather than you personally think it's shit is the narrow minded bit

I have a wide variety of musical tastes and it is ever growing, but that been said i do have my comforts. The styles or genres i fall back on time and time again.
It's easy to be snobbish about music as it is any artform and narrow minded can and often will creep in, the difference being in my eyes if once you are being narrow minded and dismissive of a genre you can give yourself a kick and open up a bit you could find something you love.
That being said it's highly subjective and essentially we are allowed to be narrow minded if we choose. I personally will not listen to chart music for the simple fact my choice of how much i am saturated with the same bloody song isn't my own. Narrow minded yes.. But it stops me from putting my boot through the tele. |

I was the same - there was a time in my life that if it wasn't ska/mod/punk it was crap - then someone opened my eyes to the world beyond that and my tastes have developed and evolved ever since to a point that I have everything on my iPod from Glenn Miller to Public Enemy and Brahms to Girls Aloud.
About the only music I don't warm to is heavy metal and heavy hip hop/rap and even then I have examples of individual tracks of both genres I do like. |

Much like you describe, my taste in music is also quite eclectic. I lean to 90's rock/indie as a default, but there's no telling what I may find pleasing to my ears.
I don't deride anyone that keeps to a particular narrow path though. They just really likes what they likes |
