Spot on OP - my Grandad and thousands like him laid their lives on the line and should never be forgotten.
Have spent the last few days watching Dakota's fly in and out of Duxford as part of the commemorations and has been a wonderful and moving sight knowing that 75 years ago they were taking men (including my Grandad) to parachute and glide into Normandy ahead of the beach assault. |

Sadly there are fewer and fewer of them as the years pass, but they are still heroes. I had a couple of Uncles in the forces during the war, luckily they survived, but ma Granddad perished while serving in the Merchant Navy.

It’s the start of it today on the south coast and tonight / tomorrow morning some of those that survived are crossing the channel by boat to the beaches, with more ceremonies and remembrance tomorrow (D-day) in Europe

The original date was 5th June but it was delayed by 24 hours. Also, the invasion began when the ships and planes left Btitain the previous day/night. |

It's crazy to think it was 75 years ago now and barely any of the men who took part are still alive. I remember watching Band Of Brothers which itself is nearly 20 years old and all the interviews with the men who actually took part at the beginning of each episode, I don't think any of them are left now  |

The original date was 5th June but it was delayed by 24 hours. Also, the invasion began when the ships and planes left Btitain the previous day/night."
Correct, delayed 24hrs due to a severe storm.
First troops on the ground (00:16 - 06/06/1944) were Glider troops (2nd Ox & Bucks Light Infantry) at one of the bridges over the Orne Canal at Bénouville, led by Major John Howard (played by Richard Todd in "The Longest Day"....who, ironically, had been one of the Para's who had actually relieved the Glider troops at 03:00).
The Pegasus Bridge café/museum at the bridge is still run by Madame (Arlette) Gondrée, whose parents owned it on D-Day, she was 5 at the time.
Was there a couple of weeks ago again, she still works there and chats to everyone, lovely lady.

Just watching the celebrations on BBC now.... Very emotional!... Such brave men..or boys as many of them were. All so proud there today...can't imagine the horrors they witnessed. We must never forget....

We visited the bridge a couple of years ago, the accuracy and skill of the glider pilots in getting as close to the bridge as they did is incredible in the circumstances.. |

Stokes Bay appears to be the best vantage point this side, they go out towards the IOW then back again, Red Arrow fly twice today at 12.30 and 16.15 approx, if you don’t see them you’ll hear them. |

We owe so much to those who gave everything 75 years ago.
The scenes portrayed over the past 2 days of what occurred then have been humbling, at times very emotional.
I had Uncles, now long passed on, who served in D-Day, but rarely talked about it. Now I know what they went through.
This shouldn't be consigned to history but taught to all children in the future. |

Shame on anyone who cannot respect the loss and sacrifice of that generation.
I just hope that VJ day is given as much coverage as the ordeal in the far East is very much lost in the European conflict. |
