Hi business owners old and new, are protection rackets still a thing? Do you still get demands for payment from random "security firms"?
I know it was a big thing in the 90s, not mentioned so much now? |

Where I was from in North Manchester there was a particular unpleasant band of brothers who used to do this. In the 90s it got so bad that they even used to go to people's homes! Anyone from North Manchester around that time know which family I'm referring too! |

By a hot snacks van and park it near any given football ground and you'll find out.
Might wanna buy a fire engine while you're at it. |

Oh I know about that. Dad had a van when the Ice Cream Wars were on. Got a brick through his window and then death threats a couple of times. Decided it wasn't woth dying over a 99. |

I remember the ice cream wars in Glasgow, dealers fighting for territory wasn't it?
I think many of the old hoods got themselves sorted and into 'legal' businesses.
The recent news said that organised crime is on the increase so I would guess that includes protection rackets.
I know of ex-squaddies who made the most of their resources when they came out. It's not like the old days where they just approached a business and threaten to destroy it but they will settle disputes between businesses and/or individuals.
It's a bit like "can't pay, we'll take it away" without the ad breaks
